This is a perfect example of when three guys have the technical and musical ability to allow themselves to mock around and have fun with music. They are indeed very down to earth guys, because they don't really have anything to "prove". They are masters of their art, and they're having a good time. And although there are shifts in dynamics, style and approach, it's still so damn cohesive! And if you play a different recording of this song you'll hear a different version. The improvisation and the musical communication is absolutely astounding.
I got to meet Marco and Guthrie after a gig at a small st louis venue on Cherokee St. indeed very down to earth cool guys. Got they autographs. Brian was at the bar i think, plus I was to intimidated to go find him too, lol. It was weird, they put a bunch of chairs in the front when they usually didn't. I came back in from a smoke and a bunch of folks were dancing, or trying to, right by the stage. Apparently someone bet 5 bucks it was undanceable. So I got up there to study an pretend to dance a little. Occasionally someone would tell me to move, so I'd dance around more. I was moving after all, haha
The closest we have to what Zappa was doing in the 70s and 80s, which makes sense because they're all huge zappa fans. The combo of humour and musicianship is exquisite. I've seen them live three times and the level they ascend to in literally every single performance is unbelievable.
I think all three are basically the creme de la creme in terms of respective instrument proficiency. And the Aristocrats is one of the few bands consisting of virtuosos across the board that actually make stuff that is listenable.
In addition to the original on the album, I've heard this done live at least ten times (not counting the times I've personally seen them live) and they always do an improvised intro, they improvise and explore during the song proper, and the solos are always different. I'll be seeing them yet again in 13 days. I really like the Version they did at the Roxy a few years back.
@ 12:57 . . . So, a few years ago between jobs (I was a Carpet Cleaner with my friend), we were in the neighboring city in SoCal (Southern Calif.) where we lived, and had some time before the next job. My friend needed to go to a Best Buys Electronic Store to look into a computer needing repairing. I told him I'd go to their music section to see if they had any CD's (there was a time they had a pretty good selection for their 1st 3 years), on my way outside of the DVD section, there stood a Tall man that looked familiar, looking at DVD's. I said to myself; "There is NO WAY that could be 'Him". I walked up to this man and I quietly asked; "Hello, but is your name Marco?" I will always remember his mannerism, it was almost shy, tepid, yet his personality seemed very approachable. He said in his slight German accent "Yes it is" as he said Yes with his whole upper torso :D. And I said; "Well I'm a Marco too, its great to meet you", and then I asked; "What the Hell are you doing here in the middle of __________ (the City)!?" He chuckled and said "I Live Here!", I think I said "WTH???" He continued; "Do you know who are my neighbors?" I motioned "who???" He says "Derek Riggs" (the Cover Illustrator for the 1st half of Iron Maiden's catalogue, who I'm a big fan of, who is from England) "and 'Muhammed Suiçmez!" (the founder, Guitarist/Vocalist of the German Tech-Death Metal band "Necrophagist", who like Chuck Schulinder of "Death", took Death Metal to its next complex stage). My jaw was to the floor. He explained he didn't want to live in LA (too expensive, too crowded) but he needed to be between airports (LA, Orange County, San Diego, Ontario) so if he had a gig to get to anywhere in the world, he was able to get flights relatively close. Seemed "California" and its weather was part of the attraction. We talked of bands he'd been associated with (this was a year or 2 before The Aristocrats), Derek and Mohammed too, which was also very interesting why they lived there. So you are right. These guys are very down to earth and very approachable. Around 1995 I met Bryan Beller _briefly_ in Encinitas Calif. inside "Lou's Records". When I was visiting the store to shop, me and my friend heard live music that seemed to be coming from inside (there wouldn't be really anywhere to play in it!), but there was Bryan, Guitarist extraordinaire Mike Keneally (from Frank Zappa, AZ/DZ, Steve Vai, Kevin Gilbert, Devin Townsend) and another Guitarist who I can't find info on, were playing amongst the "Lp Section" of the store standing up doing an acoustic set :p. - Again, all "regular guys". Andrew, have you done any Drummers that played with the late great guitarist "Allan Holdsworth"? Gary Husband, Gary Novak, Chad Wakerman, Vinnie Colaiuta? I want to see your face when you hear not only the drummers, but what Allan was doing with the Guitar like no other. He's inspired the likes of Guthrie Govan, Alex Lifeson, Eddie Van Halen, Steve Vai, Fredrik Thordendal (Meshuggah), Joe Satriani, John Petrucci and so many others :).
I saw them play in Coventry, during the performance, several times, Marco just started chatting to the sound engineer sat at the side of the stage, smiling away whilst still playing some ridiculously complicated stuff like it required no thought at all! Seriously impressive musicians.
They are pros. Had a similar encounter with Spock's Beard and Nick D'Virgilio in 2000 in Berlin. Willst he was playing really complicated stuff he had a conversation with his engineer over nearly a minute or so. Maybe not comparable to Marco, but it was the opener of their Album 'V', so if you know this, you might have an imagination of the difficult passages. Nick by the way isn't a washout. 😅
The Aristocrats are the greatest power trio on the planet. They are so good and tight it almost sounds flexible. If they left you feeling humbled then you totally understand it.
I love the audio recording for this live show. The drums sound so good. Anytime I can hear the "chik" of a closing hi-hat holding the tempo, I'm happy.
I have had the pleasure of seeing these 3 animals live. They are crazy good. In case you don't know, both Guthrie and Marco have been members of Steven Wilson's solo band.
Guthrie is the kind of player that makes every other guitarist on the planet, scared to follow him. There's a video of a jam with John Petrucci and Tosin Abasi, both utter monster players... You can see the disbelief on their faces when it's his turn to take the lead. There's simply nobody as technically proficient on both the instrument and knowledge of theory. If you've ever seen the last version of the movie Dune, some of the bagpipes you hear are him on the guitar, using layered melodies. Ridonculous talent.
Guthrie once explained this song: It's a tango in 5/4 (like every good tango should be, apparently) about some fictional character named Jack, who likes to steal things, and so the majority of his life is spent on the run from people who are trying to catch him.
"I cannot believe human beings can play like this..." I had the same reaction when I first heard Guthrie...then I heard he had started a band with two other guys...I had heard of Marco, but not Brian Beller...got their first album, jaw dropping...what they do together is unbelievable to the power of three
Wow! Those guys really are SCARY GOOD! Just amazing. Reminds me a lot of Jeff Beck. I've heard of them, I just haven't heard them. That was my introduction to the Aristocrats. Thank You So Much Andrew for bringing all these great artists to my space. Much appreciated! 😎
They did two shows, within 2.5 hours of my house, in the same week, fairly recently (within 2 years). I've been disappointed that I didn't catch one of them ever since. Now I'm angry that I didn't see both nights. One in. Charleston SC and one in Asheville NC. I agree that these performers are surreal. MM has shown this 61 year old a whole new level of understanding. He's a drum machine. No he's a drum magician, a drum machine can't do any of that shot. GG; fucking same. BB bass from heaven, infinity bass. I've been listening to their albums for a few years while drooling but these concert videos paralyze me with gleeful amazement. I won't miss another Aristocrats show within two hours of my house. I'd ride four hours each way to watch this live. It would probably pull the matrix plug out of the back of my skull. WowwwwwwwwW!
I'm just very sorry that such musicians, who create beautiful and incredibly complex music, and it's not just the Aristocrats, it's happening globally, have so few audiences who understand what they're doing. People have become so superficial and dull over time.
Speaking as a guitarist Guthrie Govan is THE MAN. He has the technique to play absolutely anything. His instruction books are 1) hilarious and 2) terrifying. Oh yeah, he's also very well-spoken. He dropped out of Cambridge University studying English to play full-time, and has his Macdonalds name-tag on one of his guitar straps from when he worked there.
Absolutely fantastic, Andrew your words at the end , I totally get it , it's great to see a musician such as yourself being blown away and inspired ... these guys are a force of nature...
Was lucky enough to see a Guthrie clinic here in South Africa. And he changed the way that I see music. Marco also came a few years before. He dropped his stick while he was playing EPITAPH by friggen NECROPHAGIST. Never missed a single note. Just laughed through it
Sort of, if you count being very experienced on their instruments and playing these songs in hundreds of shows as "rehearsed". Guthrie and Marco mentioned they don't warm up because they play live so often anyway, and they also learn the songs separately at home before going into the studio to record the songs together, since Guthrie lives in the UK, and Marco and Bryan live in different parts of the USA.
It's a pleasure to see The Aristocrats here again! There is a live version of the song 'Erotic Cakes' where Guthrie uses a fretless guitar, speechless!
I went to 6 of their shows and it's just something completely else. The venues are getting bigger every run so i would advise everybody to go see them while they are still playing smaller clubs. After they played a show in munich in 2018 marco came to the bar afterwards and just chatted some of us up. 🤪 He is the most friendly, cheerful guy you can imagine. I will love this band forever. There is nothing more that needs to be said about their musicianship, the rare thing is like you said, they bring humor, style and fun to this kind of complex music.

Yoyoka had a great jazz concert a few days ago, with original songs. I know it would be too much to react to a one and a half hour concert, but the concert is well worth watching. But you could react to a solo (starting at 1:01:50), or a one song, like Traces (starting at 1:20:25). Link to a concert - th-cam.com/video/Fk2sb9GGsEU/w-d-xo.html
They're straight up Alien Technology Andrew!... LTE(Liquid Tension Experiment) Is an awesome instrumental band, one of my favorites, but The Aristocrats are on another plane of existence...
You have to check out Yellow Matter Custard. It’s a Beatles cover with Portnoy and Paul Gilbert. Mike plays on a Ringo kit and kills it. They did a cover of “While my guitar gently weeps”. It’s probably the best guitar work I’ve ever heard.
guthrie is nicknamed guitar jesus for a reason. he's the kind of guy that if he had his guitar at a meet and greet and someone asked him something he would stop everything and "guitar lesson time".
That was wild! I love music like this…how would you categorize it? Progressive fusion? At any rate, I’m going to check out more of them. Thanks for highlighting them, Andrew!
Yeah Guthrie is one of those players that other gods of the instrument look at and go wtf was that?? Loved seeing him as part of Hans Zimmer's live band too.
Have you not done a Steve Wilson song or two featuring Marco and Guthrie? Not as playful (obviously) but just as good, they're the ultimate chameleon players.
Just keep in mind that The Aristocrats was the reason that Marco allegedly turned Dream Theater down over. This is a trio of BEASTS in the best way possible. AND Guthrie has also done stuff with Hans Zimmer, just for perspective.
That there is the best guitar player on earth. And the best drummer in earth. And one of the best bass players on earth. They gonna open up a black hole someday with all that mass of talent on stage .
Hey Andrew I can't donate but you have to really checkout Pink Floyds Any Color You Like From Dark Side of the Moon it's them just jamming and it really sounds like led Zeppelin with the Organ sound and Mason's really good Drum Comppin sound's like John Bonham could ya add React to it mate please 🙏
@@AndrewRooneyDrums ahah I can't tell if you thought I was serious or not, was just making a stupid joke about the caliber of these incredible musicians! I love Marco's playing... Bryan Beller on bass is a total wizard but for me Guthrie steals the show on this clip!!
Marco looks more at ease behind a drum set that anyone I’ve ever seen live . Everything looks effortless and he always seems happy
Well said
Need to watch three times. Concentrating on one musician at a time.
Yup!
Absolute top of the list musicians.
Absolute top of the list humble human beings.
Magic.
Can't add any more to that. Don't need to.

That's incredible. Thanks to the guy who suggested this.
I believe Guthrie is what you call a guitarists guitarist. Ask any proficient guitar player, this guy is at the very top.
And the clueless dopes at Rolling Stone don't think he's one of the top guitar players. SMH
@@russellward4624 Those lists are mostly a popularity ranking. A lot of great players are ignored because they're not mainstream enough.

forget about Guthrie, Marco on guitar runs circles around 90% of that top guitar list, and he's a drummer@@russellward4624
"guitarists' guitarist" is a lovely way to put it... reminds me of haake being one of the "drummers' drummers" in history
Excellent reaction video! Exactly what i was going through when i heard these guys the first time. So, how good of guitarist Guthrie is? Yes.
MONSTER player!
Brian Beller kills it always, Awesome tone
Phenomenal. The lot of them!

Love the aristocrats man. Their live version of louisville stomp is killer. Guthrie really is that guy for many many guitarists.
I bet.
He's a monster player
Marco’s playing just makes you smile and even giggle . He’s amazing!

It is scary how good Marco is by himself, with Bryan and Govan just extraordinary
Saw then twice in 2022 and have tickets to see them in Portalnd Or in 2024 - great review!
I got to catch them at small bar in Texas after they released their first album. They're absolutely unreal.

thanks really enjoyed this
Glad you enjoyed it!
I'd like to also add that as much as this sounds like it's all over the place... which it is. It also sounds... and has to be so very well rehearsed!

Oh thank god, it was only the intro xD

Marco to me is the ONLY choice for a Lee Lifeson project. He's a Timelord.
Absolute beast

check out Marco when he was Steven Wilson th-cam.com/video/VL61k2o-EA4/w-d-xo.html
It's very impressive stuff
they remind me of The Dixie Dregs a little
👍👍👍✌️. Check out 'Blues F**kers' for a Marco Minnemann drum solo.
Also check out Guthries other band 'The Fellowship' with brother Seth on bass. 👍👍👍✌️

Summum...Look Guthrie with Hans Zimmer
Jason Rullo reacts please
I don't like jazz fusion at all - but I still think Guthrie Govan is THE best guitarist in the world bar none. Different league completely.
They're just making music... Guthrie has little or no social media presence....
Real musicians and virtuoso's.
Just phenomenal
Yeah, Guthrie is Great! He's right up there with Billie Joe Armstrong!! (🤪)
Hey Andrew I can't donate but you have to really checkout Pink Floyds
Any Color You Like From Dark Side of the Moon it's them just jamming and it really sounds like led Zeppelin with the Organ sound and Mason's really good Drum Comppin sound's like John Bonham could ya add React to it mate please 🙏
We have all heard it and I’m sure he’s heard u it y a million times in his younger years. It is an incredible song!
Guthrie is God
Not many know this but the Aristocrats originally had a vocalist, he just kinda sits in the back now though.
Oh wow
@@AndrewRooneyDrums ahah I can't tell if you thought I was serious or not, was just making a stupid joke about the caliber of these incredible musicians!
I love Marco's playing... Bryan Beller on bass is a total wizard but for me Guthrie steals the show on this clip!!
Tango i 5/4
I think the word you're looking for is stoners
