    I was planning to return to Judgment after a long absence, but little did I know that the game just wasn't like what I'd expected it to be compared to when I played it for the first time 4 years ago and at that time there was no LJ ofc. First of all, what was very awkward and uncomfortable for me was not mastering the game techs or comboing enemies, but adapting with the game speed performance and input reading itself. The movement is very slow and sluggish as I needed to time every dodge for the game to read my input and spamming the dodge button only made it slower and vulnerable to enemy attacks. For example, if I tried to spam the dodge after light attacks, the game will read my input very late, so I have to time it at the end of the light attack string to be faster, that it self made me get damaged and at that moment I realized how weird the input reading are in Judgment. Moreover, for dodge attacks, I had to time the heavy attack button very late as the window is so short. Running attacks after Instant Running tech and 180/360 degree reversal attacks do work just like LJ, but linking them in juggle is limited and slower because bosses tend to drop faster after 3-4 hits. I'm not saying Judgment combat is bad, it's just because of how fast and responsive LJ combat is makes it not feel the same anymore as when I played it for the first time back in the day. If you're reading this and new to Judgment series, I highly recommend you to play them in order starting with Judgment and then Lost Judgment for the full experience. It would make more sense to start playing like this anyway.
    In the end, LJ basically is what RGG's final product looks like and I had to keep moving forward with the series sorry 😥 Please let me know your thoughts in the comments and how you all felt about Judgment after playing LJ?

    I think Lost Judgement is one of the biggest glow ups I've seen with a game sequel, the first Judgement isn't bad but it felt like a relic to me within the first hour of Lost Judgement, although I already felt like JE was pretty flawed even before playing LJ and getting my mind blown

    While Judgment’s combat does suffer from early dragon engine jank, recycling too many movesets, and poor balancing (Crane being a blanket downgrade of Tiger, fully upgraded Yagami doing WAY too much damage), it’s still one of my favorite RGG games combat-wise. There’s a very specific ebb and flow to it that makes it satisfying to play. Utilizing wall attacks for stuns or crowd control, flux fissure to gain heat, and EX mode to juggle enemies or brute force your way through incoming damage are all important aspects of Judgment and make the game way more fun to play once you get the hang of it. LJ is definitely better in terms of combat, but it had a really solid foundation to build off of.

    Judgment honestly is the sekiro of yakuza games, never have i wanted to learn counter and techs so much until i started my legend playthrough for this game because yagami in many boss fights needs heat in order to stagger someone just from a rush combo and not get absolutely destroyed for attempting it. tiger drop in this game was everyones best friend as well as guard breaking for stun for flux fissure.

  • @NotEnder
    @NotEnder ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Judgment is slow mainly because attack recoveries last long before the frame window for an input is allowed, usually the rush for attacks has the hitbox in frame 10/12 and the follow in frames 11/21, but for JE, the hitbox is in frames 12/14 and the follow is in frames *19/29*, and this is for all the rush attacks and unless youre in EX heat they arent switch or quickstep cancellable, JE just has a lot of these recovery frames that make it super slow

      @@z-v-x8324 RGG generally focused more on the juggling in LJ so they fixed up stuff such as the first finisher knocking down the enemy (it does this in JE so the second finisher that launches doesnt work), faster frame windows so moves flow faster and have less recovery frames, a lot of it is just QOL changes the general combat that makes it feel better

    • @xtealover799
      @xtealover799  ปีที่แล้ว

      That's quite a detailed perspective! It does make sense why the recovery frames take so long until another input is registered after light attacks. Even in EX-Boost there are slight of these recovery frames based on what I experienced and you need to time the input mid any attacks not too early or the input is not registered as well.

    • @angelusvastator1297
      @angelusvastator1297 ปีที่แล้ว

      this may or may not be related but i dont like how the inputs for the same combos are different between both judgment games. For instance, hold light attack+2 heavy attacks=crane juggle starter in Judge eyes. Light attack+hold heavy attack+heavy attack for same thing in lost judgment.
      Thought i was going crazy until i needed to press some buttons faster than others in certain circumstances. But it's still def something that might disrupt replay value.

      @xtealover799  ปีที่แล้ว

      I understand what you're saying, but that's a yes and no. Having the AI helping you in JE battles was nice, although the AI is not balanced as if there's barely any recovery time for your partners to stop attacking and leave you to do your own combos. In LJ they fixed that, but instead of the AI being helpful they become useless, If they put JE AI in LJ just imagine how they will obliterate most of the fights leaving no second for you to do your combos. I mean it's good to have it, but it needs to be balanced in between not too helpful and too useless or maybe RGG could add some special features like pressing a button that allows the AI to do supportive attacks.

    I recently went back to Judgment myself cuz I'm going for the platinum and I must say that vanilla Judgment combat (no mods) has that Yakuza 6 feel to it, very slow movesets and the block bounce being a bitch. Such a shame cuz everything else the game has to offer is spectacular (story, content, music), but it's combat is really just not that good considering Lost Judgment improved on it A LOT by making juggling much more consistent, Yagami being much faster with his movesets and removing that cancerous block bounce for the most part.

    I think RGG can create incredible combat systems with enough time but the development cycle of just one game isn't quite enough. The pattern is there throughout the series. The original PS2 game was a good foundation but it was sluggish and clunky, but Yakuza 2 improved it tenfold. It was faster, more responsive, it had more depth, it just felt better to use. It's some people's favourite to this day.
    I didn't play Kenzan so I'll ignore it and say Yakuza 3 came next and I actually really like Yakuza 3 but even I can admit it's a flawed game. Bounding is insanely fun but the enemy behaviour really puts its stain on the experience especially in groupfights. Your heat gain is also crap and your heat actions aren't even worth the hassle with how low their damage often is.
    But then 4 comes along, gives us Akiyama, the bounding god, fixes the enemy behaviour, gives you improved heat gain and makes heat actions do stupidly high damage. Oh it also adds Tanimura, and one of the most unique fighting styles in the series with him, and Saejima's there too I guess (jk he has some neat bounding in this game which saves him from being completely awful but he's still my least favourite).
    Then comes 5, which removes bounding and thus most of what gave the previous games depth. It's fine, it's fun, but it's one of the simplest combat systems in the series. Again it's a great foundation but without much built on it. Then zero came along. I don't think I need to say anything. Then Kiwami 1 came along and sweet mother of the holy Jesus Christ.
    But okay, okay, relax, that was too much awesome at once new engine, new combat. And it's okay. I actually think Yakuza 6's combat feels pretty great to play and it suffers from the same thing 3 does where people just don't really understand how it works and what you need to do to actually have fun. But again, kiwami 2 is far better regarded because of the improvements it made.
    Then, Judgement. New character. New styles. And it's great. But it's a bit slow, it can be really unresponsive and the balance is way off, with Tiger Style mopping the floor that Crane Style vomited on, and sure, some people may slip on it but ultimately being hit in the cranium with a mop handle still hurts more. And so, Lost Judgement is made and holy fuck, what, oh my god, sweet jesus.
    And we can actually see the pattern in the newest mainline release, Yakuza 7. A fun game but it's been criticised for its turn based combat being a lot slower, simpler and less strategic than other games, even if it's still a fun time. And I'm hoping the pattern will complete with Infinite Wealth being a fantastic turn-based RPG.

    • @JosephJoeseph
      @JosephJoeseph ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@xtealover799 I definetely think it's incredible how capable RGG is at constant improvement and iteration. Aside from shifts in console generations which changed the entire feel of games, or yknow, a whole genre shift, Yakuza 5 is the only downgrade in terms of combat I can think of throughout the series and they instantly bounced back from it marvelously and not only that, basically every sequel makes massive positive changes. One of my favourite things about this series is how I can see it develop and become better and better with the passing of time. I talked about only combat so far but even in the story, or the exploration, or almost any concept or theme that the series pursues you can see constant improvement in how the games tackle them.
      edit: thinking about it, this is something that really sets apart Yakuza from other game series. It's never content to just do the same thing again, it's always changing and evolving, and I think that's what allowed it to stick around for so long. Because think about it, this is a series that has been around since 2005, since the PS2! And it has releases numbering in the double digits. How many series are out there with that kind of longevity? Sure, the fact that it's only been in the public eye since 2016 in the west might be a part of it but I definetely think it's ever-changing nature is the biggest reason.
