The importer will not import anymore. Its pretty simple. But the problem with this is that the local competitors often increase their prices to and then the consumers are the losers in the end.

Wrong! You are assuming that the Americans are still going to pay for highly tariffed Chinese products. If BYD and Tesla are priced same then people are going to chose Tesla over BYD and so on... this directly impacts China.

The idea of tariff is to make it more expensive to buy and they have to compete with local manufacturers.
If the gap is narrow, then buyers might buy local stuff.
Reduced sales of imported items is the strategy.
By up your thinking ,you assume the buyers will buy imported items if their price is same as locals.
    Time will tell.

  • @decaniman

The tariffs are not only on cars. It's on everything coming from China and other countries. The U.S. does not manufacture many of the items that come from China. Household items such as electronics, (TVs and computers.), kitchen gadgets, toasters, exercise machines, chef's kitchen knives, (made from Japanese steel but made in China.) My LG TV and LG cell phone was made in Korea, my computer was made in China, my exercise machine...made in China. My Chevrolet Trailblazer ...made in Korea. It will take years for the U.S. to shift manufacturing all of these items to American factories. Trump will be gone by then. All he will be remembered for is creating a mess.

Palki missed the point. Tariffs are intended to make foreign goods more expensive and local goods more competitive. YES the tax is not coming out of the pockets of china, but it hurts their sales and marketability. So in a way, TARIFFS does hurt. Canada's ontario region this week estimated they will lose half a million jobs due to american tariffs. Trumps tariffs is not a revenue grab...but a penalty on imports hence a boost on local/american manufacturing/jobs.

It's also not accurate to say that anything will be created next Monday in America. Next Monday will be a federal holiday. Over 90% of federal employees will have the day off from work. Beyond that, setting up another federal agency will take legislative involvement. In other words, the 12 hours starting at noon when he gets the keys to the white house are not enough in the remainder of the day for legislation to get passed and the process of hiring people for a new agency to be done. Have facts first, TH-cam second.

Let's carefully consider this matter. We have long benefited from the low cost of goods. This low cost is attributable to significantly lower labor costs in the manufacturing process; for example, daily wages of $3 versus the $200+ daily wages common in America. This disparity in labor costs is a key factor in the affordability of complex products like automobiles, given the numerous components involved.

The US market is important but it's not as important as before already. China export to US use to be 24% of its total export before the trade war. Its already dropped to 14% in 2024 and expected to drop even lower in the next few years unless trump improve the US relationship with China. Which means China is decoupling itself from the US as the US wish. And the strangest thing is China total export is still increasing and even at a record high in 2024. Why? Alternative markets, the global majority countries. One big reason is because of the BRICS and the BRI. So if the Americans don't want to buy Chinese goods, somebody will. Therefore, the Americans shouldn't look themselves too high anymore.

The importer will be incentivized to look elsewhere outside China... to import or turn to domestic sources.... and prices are set to consumer demand.
Please Palki.... don't get into the business of gaslighting your viewers
Before the year 2000.....China didn't have this level of US market access........yet before 2000 ... Americans bought cars and did fine and had more manufacturing jobs

Your point is void.. since the name refers to tax on goods brought in from a foreign country..the question is which country has a relatively larger volume of resources in their home country and the capacity’s to quickly recalibrate production from abroad.. that’s sound like the US…. Then you did not factor the effect of reduce energy cost under Trump’s policy, which basically impact a massive chunk of US production costs … so your idea of inflation rise is not very strong.

Tariffs (much like sanctions) don’t work, and eventually fail! For example, China could easily export its products to the US through other countries. Besides, the inefficiencies and inflationary pressures arising from tariffs will force the US manufacturers to strike deals with the US lawmakers; thereby leading to greater corruption and chaos, forcing the policy to be revised. Politically the influential power of the US will diminish as other cheaper manufacturing economies gain greater power. Tariffs are a losing game! 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️
