What are your tips for taking notes? How do you take the chaos that is running a campaign?

i think the important thing to note on is what information they have acquired so you don't accidentally tell them things they don't know.

An excellent point! Keeping track of which NPCs they have met is also really handy. That way when they return to an area a year later, you know who they interacted with last time.

I record my sessions with a digital voice recorder. When listening back it's amazing how much stuff you actually miss at the table when you play it back!

A fair number of people seen to do this. It's something I did when I first started DMing, but quickly found I didn't have to time to listen back.

Pete Jones this! This is why I try to record all games I run.

And they're great for going back later and listening to after a campaign ends that you all enjoyed and want to revisit.

I need this. I have pretty good memory to the point I can recall small details my players completely forgotten, so my notes are lacking, but with 20 session of info I feel overwhelm.

I have never taken any note as I'm playing! who has time? I'm running the game! I have a Player to take super detailed notes and compare them against what I have from before and after. we have never had a problem. I Have each player take on a job to help me. The Bard controls the music to keep the atmosphere, the Ranger keeps the party inventory, the Barbarian keeps maps (and makes art), the Paladin keeps the notes and the Wizard tracks initaive. I'm Blessed with good Players. Also I don't tend to forget much. We are playing in a dark elf city underground in the shadowfell, there are 14 factions in a political game. I do just fine with out notes during the game. Out source it!

Outsourcing is an excellent solution if your players are willing!

Does it help if your particular game is text based? Obviously, you can always go back through the entire adventure but I'm wondering if there may be other tips for taking notes in a text based campaign.

But why write notes after the game?
