    Awesome video. This is my kind of database. Practical technology, not technology for technology's sake. Only the data you actually need and refer back to is there and it's easy to access and use. Far too many reptile databases contain a gazillion unnecessary data fields that I would never use or make it too hard to refer back to and link or cross reference. I only have 100 snakes but initiating data entry onto a proprietary database has prevented me from even trying. Excel is simple, easy and most people are at least reasonably familiar with it.
    Great job explaining. Time to invest some of my own time in exploring options!

      Go for it Robert, it really isn’t that hard and it’ll give you so much more than the ‘off the shelf’ systems.

    I'd like to see you show off your favourite looking snakes. Not necessarily the ones with the most genes/power, but ones you like the look of. Also a video with your favourite light snakes, then a video with all the dark ones. I know you have some belters. Wouldn't that be nice 🙊

      Will do at some stage. Thanks. Nice idea.

    Another great video follow up to the first video. Would be good to see some of the lizard collection at some point. Keep them coming Scott!

      @@CaptiveBredUK yes, I have my own velcro tab method that works for me but eith less than 100 snakes doesn't need to be as streamlined as your method, but always willing to take snippets of info off of others to adapt mine 👍

    Brilliant mate thoroughly enjoyed it. I'm definitely going to look into exel for collecting data. That gecko would drive me crazy I'd have to catch it. Awesome dog I have a rotti as my guardian.

      Thanks, appreciate that. The geckos are great, take food from my hand.

    I love a good excel sheet and a challenge. But I think this is above my current skill set.
    I used to love a v-lookup but find index matching to be more flexible.
    Would love to see the working of it if that was a possibility

    • @CaptiveBredUK
      @CaptiveBredUK  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I use both in this, vlookup is far easier, I’m no expert but google has most of the answers, or a smarter work colleague.

    Still looks very complicated! Not sure I understand Excel enough to do what you have done. But thank you

    Scott, fantastic follow up video, and an interesting insight in how to use Excel. I'm guessing that it was your advance excel skills of using macros and scripting that made you develop this system rather than use a commercial product such as Reptiware, Reptiscan, or some other application?
    Whilst not on the same scale as you by far, I've been in the hobby since 1986 and for me regardless if you have one reptile or 500, record keeping is a crucial aspect of the hobby / business, especially when reviewing past events, or if you ever need to have a vet see to one of the animals. Providing them with a dossier of feeding, shedding, defecation etc records gives them the full data needed to help rule out issues and focus on a more probable cause.
    Looking forward to your next video, and thanks for sharing the system with us

      Lol no macro skills here mate. It was however my knowledge of what excel could do that made me develop the sheet into what it is now.
      Yes, absolutely, record keeping is vital.

    I'm guessing record keeping is essential, didn't think of it that much on a small scale collection but I suppose getting into the habit is good practice.

    • @CaptiveBredUK
      @CaptiveBredUK  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Definitely essential, and getting into the habit with a smaller collection allows you to discipline yourself to collect and look at the data before it gets too difficult.
