I work about 90% in jazz and classical music, Kelvin on the masterbus get's it perfect most of the time.
Strings and Guitars love the BlackBox, while Saturn2 works best for drums & percussion, because of it's versatility.
For Bass and Low Winds I am using bx-subsynth for ages.
The Decapitator with subtle settings is often used in a 2nd Saturation stage.
And my secret weapon for the vocals is "Big Al" from NEOLD

most of the time I use Cubase stock plugins for distortion saturation purposes theses days.
Channel Strip, Tape Saturation, Tube, Distortion, Magneto, Multiband Quadrafuzz II etc. - absolutely great sound. You don´t need thirdparty.

Found this video because of my disappointment with Decapitator. The unnessecary volume increase aside from the saturation makes it too cumbersome to use quickly. I am deciding between Kelvin and Saturn for this reason. Kelvin seems to try to match the perceived loudness more, while Saturn more adds rather than changes to the perceived loudness. The multiple use cases for Saturn's multiband options do intrigue me.

Kelvin has replaced all my other saturators because it is incredibly versatile and sounds simply amazing. My only (slight) criticism is that it is deceptively difficult to use and has taken me quite a long time to really get to the point where I can dial in the sounds I want. Luckily it comes with a bucket load of superb presets to help you as you're going up the learning curve. But very much worth the time and effort to get to grips with it because imho you don't need any other saturator once you have it. It really is that good.

@@robshrock-shirakbari1862 Yup, I've got the Unisum too and after 11 months of use I feel I've just about learnt how to use the "top" section properly. As for the bottom panel then I'm still using presets but, luckily, they are excellent. Having said that the "default" setting, even before you start using presets, is amazing. I don't know how Unisum does it but it just makes everything seem more finished/polished/expensive.

Even the cheap version without MS already works wonders! You just need to put 1 or 2 more but its just nice to work with it especially for a later loudness push. You can add it on your main vocal track and on your master too. For the vocal the flat push and on the master maybe a slight low end bass and bingo its just full and loud too

That BlackBox sounds really good, I can hear why you love it. Love it on bass, most especially.
I don't like Fabfilter stuff. Their plugins all "have a sound" to them, consistently, that I just don't like. Feature-wise, they are nothing short of badass, though.
That Decapitator and Transformer seem awfully subtle, but Decapitator is pretty transparent. Makes me wonder if either one is doing anything beyond conpressing the sound a bit? I guess I should blame yourube? And then the vocals with Transformer got treble boost from the plugin. i'm definitely more interested in Soundtoys plugins.
I like the Kelvin and Abbey Road plugins, too.
Definitely the Kelvin or Abbey Road for vocals.

Kush stuff sounds great, I use the Omega N and TWK in every mix, both are inexpensive and very easy to use. PSP Saturator and Kelvin sound fantastic too. I have Saturn 2 and HG-2MS black box and use them too for different flavours of saturation. My Go-to saturator in Pro Tools is Phoenix 2 by Dave Hill (Crane Song) it only comes in AAX sadly, and I haven't heard a saturation plugin that sounds like this before. It's very simple to use and allows different colours of saturation to be dialed in easily. Another one I love is the UAD Distressor, yes it's a compressor, but wow, this thing when pushed a little, sounds so good .... Lots of choices out there.

I haven't used all of them, but I think the Overstayer MAS is the best one I've used. The presets on the one you showed are useful, but you really have to use the other one that comes with it to fine tune and see what is possible. I'll probably check the other ones you have on here in demo form. Personally, I would have liked it if you spent less time w/distortion on vocals. I'm looking for a saturator to make it thick and loud (like analog tape or a good console), not distorted. But I do agree that some of them produced a more pleasing distortion sound than others. If I want a vocal to be distorted, I'm probably going to use an amp emulation, or a distortion plug in specifically. (I guess technically saturation is distortion, but I mean more what you were calling 'breaking up') Thanks for the info!

I use Cubase 12 pro. And I watched your video on how to connect keyboard to a PC in cubase. In the video cubase showed your exact keyboard picture when you were on the midi cintrol view. I have a Roland Fantom-8, I use presonus 1824c as my audio interface. I run both midi out to my Audio interface. How come my mindo control does not show my keyboard on the screen like it did in your video, in the video you said watch as I plud in the connection and cubase instally knows then boom your keyboard is now showing inside the daw with keys and all. Mine just says connected and shows 4 big ass black circles [ i guess these can be assigned to control expressions from keyboard or w/e, but How come mine doesnt show a keyboard in the midi control tab at the bottom where you can click on console in Cuabse. Please for the love of god can you help me figure out why I get a box with 4 circles which look like a black dial.
I want to see my keyboard like yours showed. What am I doing wrong. I will pay you for your time through your channel if you are able to respond. I'm spent and have spent hours trying to figure this out. Already put flash drive in the FA-8 to update it to connect with PC. In cubase 12 pro it says under " studio tab, midi device it shows connected.

great video! The second example is so distracting. Hard to focus with all the autotune and distortion.

Hi Dom. Could you please make a video explaining the cubase supervision VU METER (perhaps as compared to the control room meters)? And more specific, how to use these tools for gain staging. Thanks!

That saturn preset sounds amazing! Do you mind sharing the settings or the preset?

Decapitator is like most used but lately been using Cubase stocks plugin and figured it is good enough for production. For drums bus I like the Vertigo VSM3 and vocals always Abbey Road Saturator for the sweet breakups.

For mids and highs I prefere Saturn 2. But for lows I would change my tool to bx_subsynth and bx_subfilter. But to keep in mind. This only matters, if you have PA, that can output this kind of sub noise. It's nothing for HIFI. It's for the club sound.

Give Pulsar Modular P42 a try. Sounds really good and it's quite light on CPU.

Check out Antares Warm. Antares Warm in my personal opinion has one of the best sounds 👍.

Surprised to not see IK Multimedia Saturator X in this comparison. Do you feel it doesn't hold up to these or you just don't have it?

I have it but it didn’t occur to me. It’s not one of my favourites I have to admit but I haven’t used it for a year. Has it seen any updates? :)

Kelvin sounds like PA SA2URATE....BUT Looptrotter gives you more frequency options of the Saturation itself for the Mix or Master

So many new ones out there now ... LG1, BB Tubes, etc. The saturation market is saturated!

    Very good, as always.
There's something I've always wanted to ask. How do you determine the input/output ratio on a plugin?

    • @bd9158
      @bd9158 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

Set the input until it sounds good, then I use the output to bring it back down to the initial volume (so if you bypassed it you would only hear the effect and not any volume change). Or bring it up/down if required. The input is effectively the threshold. So for a saturation plugin the higher the input the more clipped it would be

  • @johnisrael5183
    @johnisrael5183 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

Im going to share something wtih you don, about Saturation that sounds Authenitc VS Pluginish...
I disoverd....that using nebula's Pre Amp Plugin...in RND Silk Mode...with Acustica Audio and my own analog gear...witch included a Transformer Saturation "Add on" with the WA G Comp...which makes its "one the Best Rack G Comps"
That combination of using, analog harmonic distortion, with RND Silk and Acustica Audio...(Espiciall their Vintage Gear) Gives that Combination gives your a More "Even and Geniune Saturation for the Whole Mix"
Opposed to Unbalencing your EQing...with Digital Plugins to Saturation....Analog is always going to give you more Body, Eveness, Depth, and Balanced Warmth
