I'm glad you shared this. Been wondering for years what the horns on the EL SD45's sounded like. I can just imagine these beasts on hotshot trains across Indiana and Ohio before Conrail.
Boy Jack, you're really bringin back the memories now! I remember how busy Conrail's startup made the ex-PRR thru Fort Wayne! Train after train, especially during the evening hours! And how sad it was to see former EL symbols NY-72, and BRC-75 on once rival PC trackage. Thanks for uploading this!
I live in the Hanover PA subdivision, now run by CSX. Western Maryland was the first railroad in the area in 1886 or so, then eventually came to CSX thru the various mergers
Only in that last scene from The Lehigh Line did I notice any rollicking locomotives, or freight cars. Conrail must have fixed a lot of the track in these clips, or perhaps, it wasn't in horrible shape to begin with.
does anyone know what that bluish metallic car is at :47, bottom right ? It looks pretty sweet, like an old Volvo, well old now. Awesome vid as always, Thanks
Very nice old footage with variety of locomotives and places! Very nice and historical - as it seems - job! Thumbs up and favo! Greetings from Hellas. :)
Great video! I played with both regular-8 and super-8 film in the late 60's through the early 80's, but unfortunately took footage of trains on only 3 occasions that I can remember (I did a quickie conversion to video and uploaded them here on youtube a couple years ago). I was a cheapskate and painfully aware of the 3 & 1/2 minute limitation. As I recall it was maybe around $5 for a roll of silent film and $7 for processing. I bought a 32 GB memory card the other day for $25 that will hold almost 8 hours of HD video with sound. Anyway, I regret the missed opportunities to take train movies back then, so it's extra meaningful to me to see yours. Lookin' forward to watching more.
Lots of difference between the old film and the newer digital. Some of the engine numbers were not that easy to read; but still good. Thanks for posting.
I dont know. I have seen 30+ year old rolling stock before. I would say most of the locomotives have either been scrapped or sold to short line railroads.
D Smith A lot of them are still out there. Not so much the class I's, but there are railroads out there still running locomotives as old as the 1940s in revenue service.
Conrail only went as far west as Chicago area Dave. But I'm sure some CR units made it out to Oregon in run-through service. I caught Conrail w/b in Arizona on the Santa Fe. I'll have to edit that video for TH-cam. But here is the picture of that. Thanks for watching... www.flickr.com/photos/jackdk/28047319235/in/album-72157649880314264/
My favorite are the old Uboats but the GPs are nice to. Those old locomotives were work horses i mean look how many years those old engines stayed in service plus they had character unlike the newer ugly locomotives! The newer engines look like a bad knock off of the old F units but just a ugly design! Those fronts are so plain looking with no character at all! All of the old locomotives had character and looked like they were ready to work hard from the F units to the Alco's and Fairbank Morris and of course the EMD's and GE's those were the old greats! I lived and grew up with the old Kansas city Southern tracks right outside of my parents backyard on Airline hwy New Orleans Louisiana and I'm 60 years old so i got to see most of the old engines hard at work! We still have New Orleans Public Belt Railroad who still has some of the old GPs like the GP38-2 and GP35 and 30 plus some old switch engines and once in a while we catch the GPs coming across the Huey P Long bridge pulling a load! I need to make a couple videos and catch them in action! Great video!💯
This almost makes me want to cry. Its so beautiful
Very good I love
Great video Jack like seeing trains when i was young
Great video.
♥.♥
Very Good Work...Thanks #1
Born in 91 I can remember the final years of Conrail. Too bad I was too young to railfan back then.
At least you have some memory of the end on Conrail. Thanks for watching.
Great old video! Guess those locos are found only on dioramas now!
I'm glad you shared this. Been wondering for years what the horns on the EL SD45's sounded like. I can just imagine these beasts on hotshot trains across Indiana and Ohio before Conrail.
The variety in the motive power is exactly why I model Conrail in 1977
Wow a CNW back!
Great footage again, love this old stuff
I just set up my train set around my Christmas tree and my conrail box car is being pulled by my conrail engine.
Awesome video! My dad grew up seeing this kind of action on the NEC
NICE!!! Can't wait for Part II!
very cool old footage
Outstanding Jack keep em comin
I love it! Vintage transportation is the best!
Wish all that power was still around in original paint.
Awesome videos you have, and great sound. Thanks for sharing these, captured the era perfectly.
Thanks Shannon. Glad you enjoy them, and thanks for watching...

Excellent video Jack. Looking forward to the next part.
I remember the Conrail first colorful years the locomotive was black and they ran a lot on the Northeast Corridor in the seventies and early 80s
That was a great era for Conrail. I sure do miss those times. Thanks for watching...
Great stuff!
chug, chug, chug gotta love those old GE's! Great video and great stuff.

Great stuff! Brings back lots of memories. Glad I was along for the ride on many of those trips. Thanks.
Man, I'm only 21 and I envy alot of older railfans because its mostly copy/paste and boring now. Fantastic video!
Very nice old footage with variety of locomotives and places! Very nice and historical - as it seems - job! Thumbs up and favo!
Greetings from Hellas. :)

Rough sounding horn on the first train.
Wow! What's a CNW caboose doing in there at 3:14?
Never knew what would be bring up the rear. Seen AT&SF, SP, SSW, you name it. Thanks for watching...
If only people had HD cameras back then, wow that would be amazing footage. Still fantastic though!
Niiccccceeeeeee!!
Sweet

I can make out Penn Central and Erie Lackawanna, but who is the mostly pale yellow with the black just on the very bottom?
Those are ex-Reading units. Thanks for watching...
jackmp294.5™ Thanks. I'm on the former Monongahela line, absorbed into Conrail in 1993, mostly B23-7s.
@ 5:46 "Wow..That's far out" Yep it's the 70's alright hahahaha
4:17 aun autentico Prime 920
Jackmp294.5 That is very nice footage Thank you . Your Camera does much better than my camera .
Thanks Mark. Glad you enjoyed it, and Thanks for watching...
1:00 the mergers begin
most of these trains are EMD SDs right?
No, there's a crap ton of 4 axle EMDs, 6 axle EMDs, 6 axle GEs and 4 axle GEs mixed in these consists.
what ever happen to those trains are they still running?
I dont know. I have seen 30+ year old rolling stock before. I would say most of the locomotives have either been scrapped or sold to short line railroads.

Eh, CNW caboose?
I like conrail thanks for posting Can I ask does conrail ever end up in oregon

That blue livery is just awful ain't it?
No? It's nice. I like the light blue on conrail locomotives.
Conrail lives!!! Saw a ex conrail that if you looked closely you could still see some blue underneath the Norfolk and Southern paint
Sweet
