I have been on a Cheers binge for the last 2 weeks and I agree with Ted Danson, Shelley carried Cheers for the first few seasons. The writing eventually kicked in and the show went from sort of funny to hilarious. I can detect in this interview that there's a sliver of pain still there when discussing Cheers. I heard that she wasn't easy to deal with but couldn't care less. She was great on Cheers.

I recently watched a sci-fi show about time travel, where the main character met his older self from 30 years in the future (ah, gotta love those logical inconsistencies!). He was dismayed at how flabby his older self looked, being somewhat athletic in the present, and refused to believe the sad truth that this happens to everyone when they age. Funniest part of the whole show.)

I just came from watching The Boyfriend School on Amazon Prime! I love her voice!
She is a classic
Just come from watching Everyone Imitates Art, Chambers v Malone and Young Dr Weinstein from season 5 of Cheers, the absolute pinnacle of that show. Her acting in the former, where they put her in jeans and tied her hair back for about the only time, was amazing. Like a completely different character.
Amazing to me it's over 33 years ago. It was compulsory post-pub Friday night viewing.
That casual look of Shelley-that episde-was one of my favorites. Her discovering Sam kept her love letters and kissing him with such abandon was such a sweet moment between them.
I think there is and was more Diane Chambers in Shelley Long than people ever imagined I could be wrong but i really do. I am a huge Cheers fan seen all the episodes numerous times each. I've always heard she was difficult and that's kind of a similar role she played on Cheers just with comedy added to smooth it over, but I'll tell you for the 80's she was one of the most beautiful hottest women out there.

So grateful to the whole Cheers ensemble for their work on Cheers. Think Ted Danson once compared Ms. Long to Lucille Ball and he was so right. Both such deft comedic actresses-so skilled in voice and timing, interpreting the words on paper, facial expressions, physicality. Think both were serious women who were serious about comedy. I deduce from interviews with other Cheers actors and creators that Kirstie Alley's personality may have fit in better with the on-set work culture. All I can say is I hope and pray Ms. Long can look back with pride at what she accomplished on Cheers. I'll still be watching "I Love Lucy" and "Cheers" reruns when I'm in Assisted Living!

Cheers producers are cast members have mildly mentioned Shelley Long was difficult to work with, but no one expands on how that was the case, so could be why Shelley isn’t vibing a remake or redo or anything. She likely left the show a bit sour.

No I'm thinking she left cheers 3 decades ago and has worked steadily since but in every interview they still mention it so she gets peeved about it as it becomes like groundhog day, molly ringwald spoke about the same problem-she said people ask in every interview about her teen movies and she gets tired talking about it as what else can she say after the 100th time? Margot Kidder [lois from superman] said the same-that she has worked on lots of different projects but only gets asked about Superman. Alot of actors like diversity-to keep focusing on one job they did repeatedly eventually will peeve them off. Afterall what else can you say about the same topic in the millionth time you get asked.

I sort of see their point though, Long left Cheers to move on with her career but the cruel irony was that her career would never move on from Diane Chambers and she became that silly actress who ruined her career by quitting a hit show. Same with Molly Ringwald- the woman is in her 50s now and has not done a teen movie in over 30 years when she purposely turned them down to avoid them but she too could not move on. With Ringwald though she sort of ruined her own career if rumour is to be believed by turning down Pretty Woman and Ghost, they were not teen movies and were the exact type of scripts that could have helped her progress.

I LOVED Shelley Long in Cheers! She elevated the show to star status and made Ted Danson a household name as well! The fourth and fifth seasons, the writers obviously were angry with her and made her out to be a complete b#tch in the episodes and she still she found ways to bring out Diane's sweetness and vulnerability. I read an honest interview with her right after she left where she said around the third season the cast were treating her like the character (when not rehearsing or acting) and for her own stability and mental health she needed to leave the show. Sad but true. I was very disappointed with the casting of Kirstie Alley as her replacement because her acting was very broad and unfunny and everything I had previously loved about the show fell flat.BTW, on this news show you can see the genuine kindness and graciousness of Shelley Long!
