I hired a VHS video camera from RetraVision in 1993 and filmed around Brisbane with my friend Wayne (still friends today, despite him picking on me through the video…see outtakes at the end 😂). Film quality isn’t great, but you can get a glimpse of Brisbane in 1993 and 20 year old Bek 😅
Let me know in comments, what things you notice, that are different today!

That was an awesome flashback Bek! - You're lucky - you still look as pretty. It's a reminder (in hindsight) how crap video tape was, compared to today's digital media! (Not to mention, as a side note, that we all grew up watching TV's with the old curved CRT screens - HOW we ever became used to that, when you compare it to today's flat screens, is beyond me!). Great reminder too, how back in those days, no one HAD a phone TO stare down at, as most people sadly do robotically now...In MANY ways; my opinion, is that they were (overall) 'better' days, than now...

1993 is even fuzzier in my memory - lol. Nice step back in time and seeing a young Bek too.

What a great idea. And such forward planning to know that in 1993 you would have a TH-cam channel in 2024 to show the before and after.

Haha I know right! 😂 I knew I would be on the world stage one day…maybe not 42nd Street (like I joked in the video) but YT will do 😊

This is the kind of stuff that gets lost/ thrown out. By uploading it you have helped contribute to our knowledge of the past. One, day, decades from now, someone will watch this video and it will answer a question they have about Brisbane in the early 1990's. I sincerely wish more people took the time to dig out and share their old videos and photos.

@@walkaboutwithrob thanks Rob. I wish we had filmed more of the city around us but it’s interesting even looking back on what we can see in the video. Hopefully it will be interesting to others too.

I miss Tops, such a fun idea. Uptown looks so void of character and is very boring now. Yes the city skyline of Brisbane has certainly changed over the last 30 years!

Wow! 1993 was a great year to be Briz teenager. The Myer Centre was a great place to hang out all day, in stark contrast to what it is today. The 'underground' McDonalds was my fave because it was less crowded. Broadway on the Mall was the 'posh' shopping centre before Queen's Plaza opened. By strange coincidence, I was in the mall and witnessed Broadway's opening day in 1990, and then in 2013 I wandered thru it on its last day of operation. Thanks for the memories.

@@shaunyip2153 thanks for your comment. Yes I’m glad we experienced Brisbane back then. Even the old cinemas that were in the mall are not there anymore. I also remember going to see Dirty Dancing at the Myer Centre cinema when they were where Target is now downstairs. I’m glad this video was a walk down memory lane for you. Thanks for watching! 😊

@@Lifeandtravelsofbek Dirty Dancing is still great! First film I watched in the downstairs cinema (now Target) was Ghostbusters II in 1989. The last films I recall watching there was probably Men in Black in 1997. In between those years I must've watched dozens of movies there. But after a couple of local suburban cinemas opened up closer to me, I pretty much stopped watching movies in the city. I would say, the city in general, and the Myer Centre in particular started losing it's appeal in the late 90s/early 2000s when Westfield began improving suburban shopping centres, and Sunday trading there was finally allowed.

@TravelWithBek I could only compare the footage to the mid 80s, the last time I was in brissie until 1997. Not too much had changed between '86 and '93. I have fond memories of the old Elizabeth arcade in the very early 80s.
