In my experience, German turbo charged performance engines all like to burn more oil than you'd expect - so it might not be a sign of oncoming turbo failure - then again it's getting up around the typical lifespan for a lot of factory turbochargers. Also it's a fairly early direct injection engine, so could well be a bit coked up, which can also cause excess oil consumption.
the cold start smoke is from the PCV diaphragm, they crack and let oil into the intake - 20quid or so part (it's inside the round thing on top of the engine)
if u ever need parts for this car, its a good idea to check the parts number to see if its a vw part and not a cayenne/porsche specific part. can often save u quite a bit
i remember being 11 years old, was on the train across my big country. On halfway, mom told me that my dad is riding a porsche cayenne across the country, and we might see him at next station. So i switched train for cayenne, and rode like 400km or more in it. It is one of my most precious car moments.
James, your timing is amazing! Around the USA people are running the numbers and coming to the same conclusion as you - the Porsche Cayenne is perfect in everything except initial sticker price. And that means well cared for used examples are disappearing, fast! It also helps that the 1st gen Cayenne is a handsome vehicle, especially post facelift. The way things are playing out every pre-owned Cayenne in good condition will see asking prices rise. Regretville? I think you made a good move here. Cheers, James!
Tood Deeken of Everyday Driver has been a good resource on this - he got a .2 first gen Cayenne V6 for his wife and reporting on the long term health of the car. And it has been fairly unstoppable for at least 120,000 miles, surviving Utah winters.

I could only justify mine because it was already converted to LPG and that makes its case brilliantly. Here (Portugal), LPG is almost half the price of petrol :)
Interesting comment on the interior space being good, I feel newer cars are getting worse in this - I’m shocked how little usable space is in some vast SUV - I first noticed this on the first gen Q7 which was almost small inside. The issue seems to be the tumblehome (well that’s the yacht term) where the sides flare out and the roof is low. The Disco 3/4 were brilliant for being slab sided while most 4x4 now are heavily flared below the window line while roofs are lowered to look maybe sleek? I really feel amazed that people want cars with a huge footprint that are actually almost cramped inside.
I'm glad to see the new car is a Cayenne. I offered my Cayenne to Jay. If not going to Jay, I might just keep it and take the advert down. There is so much character from the wheel to the hands, immense grip and power. @Jay, you could make a video after a year listing the repairs and costs, and of you taking it off road.
A friend of mine bought a 1st gen Cayenne a few years back, within a few months the needed repairs cost more than he paid for it. So definitely take a close look at any used Cayennes a lot of them have not been well cared for.
James, I love your rationale for pitching it to your sister - she doesn't drive much so it won't cost much more to run than her Ecoboost Fiesta. The same kind of thought has crossed my mind occasionally - if I drove less (ie if I was less in love with driving), I'd get rid of my sensible diesel and buy some guzzling comfy petrol-fuelled funwagon and not have to spend much more running it overall. Sadly, I like driving, so I'll keep my diesel.
I've always liked these. And I wouldn't mind having one for a bit to just have the experience. I look forward to hearing how the reality of living with one is.
Try a Volvo, say a S60 R, V70 R, or a later V70 or S80 T6, there all about 300 bhp , 1.6 - 1.7 tonnes, 4wd, and fairly quick, or a 97 - 02 C70 T5 Gt, or an old 850 T5-R, even the C70 is roomy enough, just a few ideas could be worth a try, maybe see if you can get one or any of them on the channel to review
I am from Québec, I use to own many muscle car's. SUV AWD is very useful where I live ( and with the kids ) . But I would see you, for your filming needs, more into a wagon, like a amg Turbo wagon. Alex from legit car's has two seem to enjoy them. With all the deferent activities and filming you do, a sporty wagon would probably fits the "day to day" needs and still keep the driving fun available.
It shows how things have progressed; everyone slammed the chassis-share with the Touareg, but today the response is "Well, of course you would share the chassis", very little has a unique chassis these days. It wasn't the nicest car when it was new, but the facelift did a really good job in helping the car age actually really well. Oh, by the way, Ben spoiled the surprise as I say his DadCar video first, so I knew what the reveal was. It's great you give him so much help and support.
It's good that you're not a complete idiot with your money, and that value actually means something to you. This Cayenne was a great choice and in great shape, so repairs should hopefully remain reasonable. I look forward to more vids on this vehicle and any updgrades/changes you make. Bravo!
You know what- you never know anything till you drive it. Most of us don't have the opportunity to drive all that many cars. You do you James and I'll continue to tune in because your channel is great! -American fan since 50k subs
We love our facelift cayenne. We needed a family wagon for our three kids and couldn't face driving an espace. So a dirty great V8 it was. It has also become everyone's favourite do all car out of all four of our fleet.
Best time to buy a 1st Gen cayenne was about 5 years ago, now I think you’re starting to play the older car lottery, most 2nd gens are probably still in good shape though.
James please let me know when you decide to sell this, I bought a Cayenne S and absolutely love it (I pull trailers and do the odd things in fields which is loads of fun in a cayenne) but I'd really like a turbo and so knowing you, when you sell, I'll be here 😊
Look up the Air Oil Separator, these should almost be treated as maintenance parts on Porsches of this era and will increase oil consumption and create a white smoke before eventually failing catastrophically and having HGF-like failure symptoms.
Great car. Absolutely loved ours. Sublime comfort and if made me realise I could not live without a heated steering wheel. We bought ours despite me saying it was the ugliest car ever (!) as we wanted a fast SUV. Only issue with ours was the Panamanic roof was ‘inconsistent’ for opening/closing but you soon learnt to just push it up to help it, and the cost to fill a tank was heartbreaking. And that when fuel was £1 😂
Superb cars, yours looks great on the technos! I have a GTS, I went for the GTS purely for the seats and I really didn't want the hassle of replacing turbo's due to bad seals. Quite common over on Rennlist. I do hanker for the power of the turbo at times however.
I’ve had a few turbos, as long as the coolant pipes are changed to steel and you can’t hear any piston slap, they’re amazing cars for the money. Throttle response is poor but once that boost kicks in, these no buyers regret! 🎉
James, Sorry to put a sensible hat on. But in the context of this Cayenne age, mileage, creaks, white smoke etc. I wondered whether you employed a professional pre purchase mechanical inspection on this car and what your over view is on the rest of us paying for that sort of inspection. Any way fingers crossed for you on the service that is coming up. Hope I’m wrong but I’m thinking. £3,500?. 😎
The facelifted models look much better than both the pre-facelift 1st gens and the early 2nd gen Cayennes. The interior and rear bench space are the only real downsides. The air suspension is much more reliable in these than pretty much anything else out at the time.
Fair play taking the pill and going for it beautiful spec if I didn’t need the mpg of a diesel for the miles I do I’d love one of them FairPlay mate and congrats!
Great choice Jay...Its why I subscribe here. You got a good eye for the under dog motor . I remember when no self respecting car journalist would go near one of these with Jeremy Clarkson's old broom stick..😎
Oh Lord, this is a russian roulette with 5 in a chamber. I am Porsche fan and I love first gen Cayennes, but I would never risk it :) Hope it works out for you!
A tasteful aftermarket "bull / push bar" of some sort added to the front end could really be a cool accent to one of these... it would help break up the roundy frog look.
15 and a half to the gallon? That's still better than my 1977 Olds 98 Regency with the 403CID / 6.6L V-8.... that wheezed out 185hp and returned 13mpg.
Great video, very interesting. Somehow when I opened this episode in your life I didn't expect the car to be a Kia Sportage. Never mind though, better to get something that will give you stories to tell eg costs/disappointments/reliability/thrills/why do I need to go shopping in a 155mph car that does 18mpg....
James I like you was not a fan of sporting SUV’s they seemed pointless, this was until I experienced the delights and honestly dual personality feel of a 958 cayenne turbo. They are fantastic cars and truly under appreciated. I also notice your bahnsport sticker and must say being from around where scott runs that business all I here is good things about them.
I'm really not a fan of SUV's, but I don't mind a proper off-roader. So with chunky tyres, a lift kit, bull bars, spotlights and a winch, that could actually be fun. But for daily road use...giving it to your sister seems like the sensible option..
Well done James! Hope you enjoy it! BTW, we got the CD from .42 on the first iteration down to .35 for the facelift. A lot of the reduction was due to those spoilers in front of and behind the wheels and the underside of the front bumper. These are still great cars and drive well enough to belie their age.
Assuming you don’t want to spend silly money, you should really take another look at the F10 M5. It ticks all the boxes, brilliant car, and prices are probably at rock bottom right now
Great info and video !!! I just purchased a 2016 Porsche Cayenne turbo virtually no records of maintenance. I know it was a dealer maintained car throughout the last three owners. How do I know if it’s time to replace the transmission fluid? I am at 64,417 miles. My previous car was a Toyota 4 runner that ran 110,000 before I changed the fluid. can you tell me what that fluid was that you used was a third of the price from Toyota? thanks again for the great information and video!!!
lol, that economy and terrifying snag list, for a large brick - not something I would choose, however I appreciate the lunatic petrol head luxury bangernomics. Hope it finds, the right home, whoever that may be with 😅
Just in time, here in Indonesia, first-gen Cayenne is appreciating quickly. Suddenly everyone wants one despite its notorious gremlins. Of which there are many. But hey, if you're gonna enjoy it, why the heck would you not getting one anyway.
Hmm, Ricky over at Reperformance recently acquired an MOT failure C6 RS6 V10 saloon in a rare and fetching shade of blue. Once it leaves his hands it will be very well sorted indeed. It only has 51,000 on the clock and it has a lovely spec. I believe he is looking for £20-25K. The engine appears to have been stage 1 fettled so about 650-700hp for sir? All will be revealed on tomorrow's video.
Had a 2003 for the last 12 years , got 150k on the clock, absolutely bomb proof , the turbos in all Porsches range are over engineered , there’s nothing better having a tank for a family car and safety , and 485bhp available when your on your own 😂
You'll be happy to know the 4.8 Turbo is the most prone to bore score Have fun with the 28,000£ bill. It's a matter of time, not IF Also i sold mine when i had a renault Zoe for 3 days and it was faster in the city than the 500hp Cayenne due to the MASSIVE turbo lag
Is it really? I doubt it, we should have heard more about it by now then, methinks. Also, that would have to be some extreme short burst city for a zoe to be "faster"... But I think you might be joking with that one.
@@GoldenCroc is it what? Slow off the line? absolutely, it's 0-60 is 6.8sec without brake boost and 4.9sec with brake boost. Any VW e-UP,or Zoe will beat it off the line if you are not brake boosting. Also Porsche engines are garbadge, bore score has been an issue since the 60s and it happens on the 2022 4.0Twin turbo as well. It's like they do it on purpose
@@sorinelpustiu5674 I answered in the order you wrote above. So my first text was about bore scoring being worse than the 4.5 ones. I doubt it, but if you got some numbers, sure I am willing to listen, Your "faster off the line" and "faster in traffic" seem a bit hyperbolic to be honest, as I said that would have to be some seriously tight city traffic. 0-60 without brake boost is about 6 seconds, or a tenth or two less... not sure where you got the 6.8 seconds from. Thats about a second off. Since those numbers are faster than the cars you mention, It would have to be very tight traffic for them to be faster, but even then its doubtful, so I can only assume you exaggerated a bit for comic effect.
@@GoldenCroc 1.check any forum or i can show you pics with my car without an engine if you want. 2.try a zoe or an e-UP without brake boost and see what happens. 3.if you own one,you know the turbo lag is atrocious. 4.show me a video of you getting to 62mph in 6sec without brake boost. *I use dragy BTW,a stopwatch won't do
@@sorinelpustiu5674 1:I far as I know 4.5 outnumbers 4.8 significantly, which forum should I check and what should I search for to collect the data you have? Or you could just quote your numbers. 2: Why would you brake boost an EV? Is that even possible with those cars you mention? 3: Its not really strictly turbo lag per se, more like ECM limits. At least thats that I think. Doesnt matter for my point though. Was it a joke or not? And if it wasnt, how was what I said wrong? 4: I got a dragy as well. You said 0-60 in 6.8, now its 0-62 in less 6? Thats quite a bit different, wouldnt you say? Curiously, thats just about the same time as I said was possible earlier. Hey, I get if you think the car was crap and let you down. I am none to impresed by the quality myself, its in many cases terrible, especially the engines. You will be thrilled to know my car had a new engine ounder factory warranty at 59 000 miles already. Just dont see the need for, what I see as, exaggerating that "last 30%" when much of it speaks for itself.
DB9’s seem to have become very affordable recently for your next daily. Now can you help me please? Having had 5 Alfas (currently still have a 916 spider in the fleet) a 996 911, 2 x 350z’s an Evora which I still regret swapping for a 370z Nismo which I then had to sell quickly (at a profit) to pay a miscalculated stamp duty bill! So I’m now running, alongside my long serving Speedster Clinic 356 recreation (more authentic than a Chesil) a Saab 93 as my daily but I am now in a position to upgrade to something more sporty. I’ve narrowed it down to either a Cayman 3.4s or a Z4 Coupe 3.0si both of which you’ve given glowing reviews, so I’m stumped?! I can’t afford both, so which should I get?? Help!!😊

I look forward to hearing how the reality of living with one is.
Don't apologize for buying a crossover. Car enthusiasts can be enthusiastic about whatever vehicle they want.
Bit like Allegro owners, though.
As I've said before, great work and really top marks for supporting @Dadcars - really respect helping others aim to make their dreams happen.
Gee you’re good to your sister! I lent my XKR to my sister a few years ago as she needed a car……never got it back.
Awesome car / but watch those sunroof drains - aircon condensation drain and the elv module - but otherwise they are awesome- congratulations
Have you considered the Jaguar XJR X350/8, Smooth and powerful all the toys and very comfortable.
Really enjoyed this video Jay, and an excellent outro tune too!
“When you find the appropriate piece of road” - so Heathrow let you have a go on runway 09R?
It's good that you're not a complete idiot with your money, and that value actually means something to you. This Cayenne was a great choice and in great shape, so repairs should hopefully remain reasonable. I look forward to more vids on this vehicle and any updgrades/changes you make. Bravo!
I have a Gen2 Cayenne, and its amazing; you'll love this one!
This is it I'm afraid... you've officially hit: middle age.
My condolences 😔 🙏
You know what- you never know anything till you drive it. Most of us don't have the opportunity to drive all that many cars. You do you James and I'll continue to tune in because your channel is great!
-American fan since 50k subs
We love our facelift cayenne. We needed a family wagon for our three kids and couldn't face driving an espace. So a dirty great V8 it was. It has also become everyone's favourite do all car out of all four of our fleet.
I had a 2011 Porsche Cayenne. It was great. Hope you enjoy yours!
Best time to buy a 1st Gen cayenne was about 5 years ago, now I think you’re starting to play the older car lottery, most 2nd gens are probably still in good shape though.
Brill great to see you did it. 😀😀😀😀. I’m worried now I might follow suit!
James please let me know when you decide to sell this, I bought a Cayenne S and absolutely love it (I pull trailers and do the odd things in fields which is loads of fun in a cayenne) but I'd really like a turbo and so knowing you, when you sell, I'll be here 😊
Nippy...that's a good one! There are some nice powerful Alfa's who could fulfil your 4 door wishes...
Jay, that aint an SUV.
That is a Tall Sports Car, this is an exception!
Get a V70R! Inline 5 turbo, wagon, AWD, and with the option of a manual. What more do you want?
How about a 5 series touring as the next practical bus? F11 535d will give you 40 mpg, huge space and plenty of performance - plus scope for chipping…
Look up the Air Oil Separator, these should almost be treated as maintenance parts on Porsches of this era and will increase oil consumption and create a white smoke before eventually failing catastrophically and having HGF-like failure symptoms.
Well, a car that always caught my attention is the BMW f10 550d, that can be a nice daily when it works.
The one with 3 turbos?
@@joekavalauskas8767 yep, that one
good luck sir, my 958 cayenne S was an unreliable heap
I agree. These and like most Porsche are a ticking time bomb when it comes to reliability.
How about a Flying Spur as your new daily, James? :-) If you can ignore the old 7sp zf auto, the 15mpg and the barge-like proportions, that is?
Excellent purchase, I am currently looking for one myself.
James, are you going to re-badge the rear...maybe a simple RUF piece💡
Congrats on the new ride 😉
It definitely needs something doesn't it - tempted by a RUF badge for sure, but only if it has legit RUF bits on
PCCM+ has one major flaw - CarPlay is wire only. No wireless. And it has no camera inputs. I could not justify spending so much money on it
My CL63 gave me 11mpg, first name basis with the guys at Shell 😂You should defo review one of those
The facelifted models look much better than both the pre-facelift 1st gens and the early 2nd gen Cayennes. The interior and rear bench space are the only real downsides. The air suspension is much more reliable in these than pretty much anything else out at the time.
What happened to the maserati? I've had a cayenne for a couple of years now. Thirsty but really nice car.
As far as replacing the Cayenne, how about the Toyota Alphard? For some reason, I just fell in love with it.
On suggestions for your new car - you should check out some fast wagons. Something like an Evo wagon or an RS Avant would do nicely as a daily driver.
great video, i would suggest a more exotic less well known lancia thema 8.32. with a ferrari V8. not many around any more
Another great video James. Keep targeting my favourite Range Rovers, Porsche Cayennes and Lexus hybrids 👌
Fair play taking the pill and going for it beautiful spec if I didn’t need the mpg of a diesel for the miles I do I’d love one of them FairPlay mate and congrats!
What do you think of the gen after this one? The diesel is really good - it’s the Audi 3.0 TDI.
@@SenszR yeah I have looked at the v6 but I work community and ulez is coming in where I work I need something cheap and ulez friendly 🙄
Nothing tasteful about a bull-bar.
Great video James thanks 👍🏴🙏
15 and a half to the gallon? That's still better than my 1977 Olds 98 Regency with the 403CID / 6.6L V-8.... that wheezed out 185hp and returned 13mpg.
BHP Autos had a Ruf 957 facelift (5 years ago now). Wonder if it is the same one....
Alex kerston takes a bow. That’s u and matt Watson now following his car choices!
He can always sell the stupid sorry excuse for a car. Auto illiterates still pay an arm and a leg for them.
Assuming you don’t want to spend silly money, you should really take another look at the F10 M5. It ticks all the boxes, brilliant car, and prices are probably at rock bottom right now
Bit of a puff of smoke from left exhaust as you pulled away at circa 11:40 James???
Hope it finds, the right home, whoever that may be with 😅
Just seen this a year on James , do you still own it and love it , ignore this I have since watched the video to the end 😂
Oh I do have a weak spot for those
Had a 2003 for the last 12 years , got 150k on the clock, absolutely bomb proof , the turbos in all Porsches range are over engineered , there’s nothing better having a tank for a family car and safety , and 485bhp available when your on your own 😂
Congrats! Great video! Excited for more content :)
You'll be happy to know the 4.8 Turbo is the most prone to bore score
Have fun with the 28,000£ bill.
It's a matter of time,not IF
Also i sold mine when i had a renault Zoe for 3 days and it was faster in the city than the 500hp Cayenne due to the MASSIVE turbo lag
I doubt it, but if you got some numbers, sure I am willing to listen,
Your "faster off the line" and "faster in traffic" seem a bit hyperbolic to be honest, as I said that would have to be some seriously tight city traffic.
Help!!😊
This video now makes sense. I watched dadcars epsiode earlier and he was reviewing JMs cayenne. To which i thought, when did i miss that annoucement?
Should have review embargoed him JM 😅
Boulder dash it all started when I got one and you were intrigued haha !
A Ford Mondeo ST. You must have seen the Gran Tour episode where they say good bye to the Mondeo
