- A playthrough of Human Entertainment's 1995 point-and-click/survival horror adventure game for the Super Nintendo, Clock Tower.

The Japanese-exclusive Clock Tower for the SNES (also released as Clock Tower: The First Fear on PS1 and WonderSwan) kicked off the series back in 1995. The game that the US received as Clock Tower was actually it's direct sequel, and was known as Clock Tower 2 in Japan.
In this video I am playing from a rom that has been patched into English by the ever-talented Aeon Genesis translation group.
It's a real shame that this one never got an official release in some form in the west, because (at least in my humble opinion) it is by far the best game in the series. Clock Tower is quite understated in most ways, and does an expert job of building tension and atmosphere with its effective sound design (the rip-off of Michael Oldfield's Tubular Bells theme from The Exorcist works very well here) and it's classic 2D sprite work. I also think that this one is quite a bit easier than the first US game is to go back and play - the 2D graphics have aged far more gracefully than the sequel's awkward, chunky, and generally ugly 3D character models.
Clock Tower always amazes me for just how much it does within the limits of a 24 megabit SNES cartridge. This just isn't an experience you would expect to be able to have on a 16-bit console. It does horror better than most CD games managed for sure. In many ways it reminds me of SOS (another SNES game developed by Human). Both of them were quite forward thinking in their designs, but Clock Tower was a huge evolutionary step forward.
The game play is fairly simple, there are some basic puzzle-solving elements and the terrifying chase scenes, but the mansion is huge and the path you take through the game is entirely up to you. It's surprisingly non-linear, and the choices you make throughout the game can lead to one of nine total endings.
I went for the B ending in this playthrough. The S ending doesn't match up with the sequel, and the A ending requires you to skip certain sequences that provide a lot of the back story (like the secret room with the skeleton). Since endings A, B, and C are all considered canonical, I went with B as the best compromise between being thorough and ending in a way that is consistent with the PS1 follow-up.
It's Friday the 13th today, and since Clock Tower is probably one of the scariest games I've ever played, I thought that this would be an appropriate time to share it with you all. I hope you enjoy it!

A shame we didn't get this game officially in the west. It's a very impressive Survival Horror title that predates the original Resident Evil, and is a very spooky game even by today's standards!

Basically a Giallo but in game form! Takes heavy insperation from Dario Argento’s “Phenomena” 1985 and some stuff from Suspiria 1977!
You can order an English patch for the Snes..I bought the physical copy a few years and it's so good.

Clock Tower is one of the best, and scariest, horror games that I've ever played, and it's definitely the best game in the series. Happy Friday the 13th!

This is one of my two favourite retro horror games, right after Sweet Home. :) Great atmosphere, visuals, and constant tension make it one of the most memorable SNES games for me by far...

It's hard to choose between this and Haunting Ground. Both are good.

Not true. The first survival horror game with all of the mechanics of the original Resident Evil is Project Firestart for C64 from Electronic Arts.
@@SonySupporter There is no "true" Stand-Alone-Origin for the Survival-Horror-Genre in the RE-Style. Many games influenced the genre. Project Firestart is a good one, yes, but there is also "War of the Dead 1 & 2" which had mechanics like limited ammunition, protagonist as a special-force-member in a monster-infested city-region. "Sweet Home" as the spiritual prequel to RE is also to mention. And of course "Alone in the Dark 1-3" and "Doctor Hauzer" for the angled camera view and old mansion - setting etc..
Clock Tower on the other hand has its own Survival-Horror-Formula different from Resident Evil. I think there is little to no influence from it.
@@principedelamuerte3235 Sweet Home has nothing on the genre with the exception of the "door-opening' sequence. The earliest game with almost all Alone in the Dark/Resident Evil mechanics is Project Firestart. Dead bodies, blood scattered around the floor on walls, files to read, tubes with monsters, self destruct system at the end, etc.
This game deserves more. It’s a shame this never came out in the west.

A console 2d pixelated game from the 90s that is still scarier than most horror games. Its all about the mood.
Best thing about this game is that it has, aside from multiple endings, random types of scares with each game. Like the hand from the mirror. In one playthrough, the TV was turning itself on.
For an SNES game, it seems to look play more like an early generation CD-ROM game.

I actually had this game on a bootleg cartridge from South America. It definitely left an impression on me as a kid.
PIN THIS - ENDINGS
To get ending S, you'll need to find secret room before being captured and speak to Lotte in the cave. Try not to discover Laura or Ann dead. Free the crow. Go to floor 3.
Ending A has same requirements, except you need to be thrown into the cell rather than find secret room.
To get ending B (seen here), get thrown into the cell or find the secret room and let both Laura and Ann die earlier on.
To get ending C, get thrown in the cell or find the secret room. Laura or Ann's fate doesn't matter. Go to floor 2 instead of 3. Do everything you can to avoid Mary. Throw her away from ladder by tapping B button.
To get ending D, don't get thrown in the cell or find the secret room. Make sure to speak to Lotte in the cave and go to floor 2.
Ending E has same requirements. Only difference is to go to floor 3 instead.
To get ending F, don't get thrown in the cell and don't speak to Lotte in the cave.
To get ending G, find the car and the car key. Enter the car three times. You need to witness two of the other girls dying. If you see all three die, the car disappears.
To get ending H, escape in the car after seeing only one girl die.
I have a screenplay collecting dust based on this game. I took some creative liberties in some areas but I really tried to make it kind of a Frankenstein’s monster with a few different endings incorporated. I thought about approaching a friend who owns a small media company to produce a short film but I changed my mind. It will probably never see the light of day but I’m proud of the months of work I put into it!
You should watch Phenomena to look into how you would improve Argento's film (in which this game was inspired)
A lot of inspiration from the og Suspiria as well. The opening kill, the music, a dog involved, the demonic room and the curtains hiding the monster come to mind.

Really great animation and a good atmosphere. Awesome game! Even nowardays point n click games aren't as that well animated!
This game is easily one of the best horror games of all time -- in terms of music, atmosphere, story. Sure, a lot of it is lifted from the film: "Phenomena", where Jennifer Connolly can summon insects to her aid (like the crows aid Jennifer in the game) and battles a disfigured dwarf who brandishes a giant pair of scissors and his mother.
For absolutely no reason other than to be insane, the film has chase sequences set to Motorhead and Iron Maiden, and THAT ending remains one of my favorite "WTF!?" endings of all time.
It's a damn shame you had to suffer through The Struggle Within though. If it wasn't for Roger L. Jackson doing Bates' voice with that classic "Scream" voice it would be a 1/10.
Yeah, I absolutely love this. Did you know that they modeled the in-game Jennifer after Jennifer Connolly herself, too? It's a nice break from the Japanese tendency to make all white women blonde and blue-eyed :) And yeah, The Struggle Within. Uck. When they named it they must have known what a struggle it was for anyone to play it through instead of just moving on to something better.
I did, but I found that out completely by accident. I'm a big Dario Argento fan from way back, and upon watching Phenomena, I knew there had to be SOME inspiration for Clock Tower's story.
The Struggle Within is a rare game, and I owned it. It's one of the only rare games I don't regret trading it for a pittance.

I played one of these on the PS.. literally scariest game to me. The dead silence and you looking in random places where nothing should be, like an old cabinet or closet to have scissor man jump out with very startling music.. or hearing his clanging scissors far away, knowing he is coming for you but not knowing exactly which room he's in. The one game that literally terrified me as a kid.
As opposed to figuratively scary.

This a very cool game, and I tried to play it, but man, it just moves sooooo slooooow. I slogged my way through it, though. The PS1 Clock Tower, though, remains one of my favorite games ever.

The possibility is out there essentially.
The reason why this game didn't get a release for North America was for a few reasons.
1. The Horror Craze would not kick off until the year after with Resident Evil.
2. There was still all the flak going on about violence in video games and the ESRB was just going into full effect.
3. Nintendo wouldn't have released this anyway because of their obsession with wanting to keep video games for All in the Family.

The PS1 remake ruins the plot of the second game, on Super Nintendo after Jennifer incinerates Dan, she runs to the elevator, on PS1 after the player sees Jennifer run to the elevator, the camera returns to where Dan was, and in the pile of burnt flesh and blood Dan Rises From the Ashes and he's shown to have yellow eyes.

Nope, the PS1 version of this was a Japanese-only game too. There was a fan patch to English for that version as well, though.

Yeah, it's a real shame this wasn't in the US. Really, Human Entertainment? I blame Human Entertainment since SOS is the only SNES game released outside of Japan and we *did* have stuff like Killer Instinct, also on SNES.
It would be cool if they remastered the game for the current gen consoles. But, I have a feeling that its not going to happen for a good while.
Sadly, it won't. At least, I really doubt it. This series is kind of obscure, and not to mention that point and click games are out of style, but it would be really cool

Unless Capcom had an Interest reviving it since they bought the IP directly to the Original Owners which was Human Entertainment

Back when I had played it I thought she reminded me of Jennifer Connelly and the direction and music of argento. Recently I had found out it was used by the director as inspiration, so I guess o was right.
The a animation of them talking even is amazing for the time. And i like the idea of a game that is different when all the rest are the same. Investigating and not having weapons.. it is more realistic like life than a movie or video game.

I absolutely loved this game and I was obsessed with it back in late 2018 when I was still a junior in high school. I never knew that Bobby Barrows aka Scissorman was inspired by cropsy from the movie “The Burning”. I really hope that the current owner of the clock tower series remakes Clock Tower for the modern and old fans of survival horror games just like Capcom did and Konami is doing right now with silent hill 2. It’d be really amazing if they remade “the burning” as well. That movie was amazing, a remake would be sooo incredible for both clock tower and the burning.
Not quite the remake you’re looking for but this game is getting an official remaster with modern controls/enhancements + an animated intro. It’s coming sometime around early 2024

For some odd reason, even the *font* -- the one used for text and dialogue during the game -- is kinda creepy-looking! Of course, maybe that's just because I associate it with the game?

Had NOA been a bit more flexible and allowed some Third-Party Company to release it, I think the West would've called this the second milestone in the Survival Horror Genre in retrospect. (The other is Infogrames' Alone in the Dark from 1992)
As this was released in 1995, it would have been released without edits since by then, the ESRB was formed. My guess is American companies were not interested in releasing it in the States.
Hey, I have a horror game for you to try, it’s called “sweet home” for the NES. But the problem is, it wasn’t released in America, only japan, but you can try to order the game yourself tho 👌
Kinda sceptical on the new rerelease of this game. The original is fine, but its the realistic horror art that makes it cool since its based on "Phenomena 1985" horror movie. Where the new rerelease seems to use bland manga effing stuff, just feels mediocre and i am really sceptical.

I've been trying to defeat the big baby at the end and I keep sliding down. I'm playing the snes rom version on retroarch. Has anyone ever had a similar issue? Also what's the panic button?
You have to press the panic button repeatedly so that Jennifer climbs up.
@@ShauingOfficial which keyboard key is assigned to panic button. That's what I don't know.
@@3Dcowboyvideos , the B button. Press it repeatedly at a constant speed (not slow) when or before the camera starts moving to the left after Jennifer stops running after getting in the water, and keep pressing until the camera pans up, which means you made it.

it’s so slow n sluggish, and i don’t think i can beat it cuz of the emu glitch (?!). maybe, i have too much junk in my list that i’m carrying, n i’m too heavy too climb up ramp?
