I was going into watching the first episode of Superman and Lois thinking that I would like it if it was going to be better than supergirl but I was pleasantly surprised by how it was not just Clark then all the other characters like supergirl was. Superman’s character is, and always will be, a very “Boy Scout” personality. And that’s precisely why he caught on in the first place. More than most heroes, Clark goes out of his way to do what he thinks is the right and moral thing to do.
And that moralism is when the character is at its best. At the end of the day, he’s still just a community oriented, rural Kansas farm boy.
Good thing too considering what the guy is capable of

    • @MrBrachiatingApe
      @MrBrachiatingApe 2 ปีที่แล้ว +30

Ultimately, his greatest power is that incorruptible goodness, that humble, sunny, optimism.
What I love so much about Superman and Lois's Superman, though, is the clear line dividing Superman the hero and Clark the dad, and the simultaneous perfectly clear comprehensibility for that division.
As Superman, he's massive, iconic; he's smiling, almost joyous, almost innocent, moral, helpful, strong, certain, and wholly undivided in his purpose. He is a *superhero* in the very best sense.
And then he goes home and becomes Clark the dad...and though his love and devotion to his family is immediately apparent, he's also uncertain, not totally able to connect with his children, with imperfect judgment, occasionally being too harsh, occasionally too filled with worry to think clearly, though ultimately just as undivided in his purpose to be the best father and husband he can be.
It should feel like some fake private vs real personal character split, but it comes across as equally sincere--and that sincerity is the ultimate emotion the actor must portray. Superman's awesome sincerity must always shine through, and Tyler Hoechlin absolutely nails that aspect.

Superman (2016), written by Peter Tomasi, is great at getting this, though people tend to forget about a few of the arcs that are fairly boring. I highly recomend reading it.
Jon Kent as Superboy was awesome, before Brian Michael Bendis decided to shake things up for reasons I don't really get. Don't get me wrong, Bendis has done some cool things. Action Comics under Bendis has had some great moments focusing on Clark Kent the reporter, and I thought that a lot of the stuff around the arc in Superman (2018) where Clark reveals his secret to the world was really fun (no idea if that's been retconned yet or not).
One of my favorite depictions of Clark Kent is in American Alien. Unfortunately, that was written by Max Landis, who was since outed as, at the least, a huge scumbag, so I feel weird recommending it, but All-Star Superman and Superman For All Seasons are two other great Superman stories.

Looking at Henry Cavill in interviews, you can see that he's perfectly capable of playing Clark Kent, the shy, but happy-go-lucky goodie-two-shoes from Smallville, with a strong moral. But they wanted him to play a jaded man who distrusts people (Geralt of Rivia). A comment I've seen perfectly encapsulates the problem with the new live action versions of the DC superheroes, I could never see any of them consoling a crying child, and if you can't imagine them doing that, they're neither Superman nor Batman, they're an imitation and a parody that strips away their personality and leaves them only their suit and their powers.

One of my favorite episodes was when Lois ends up with Clark's powers. She goes to him upset, saying she is a failure because she saved a crashing plane and as a result was too late to save a village from an avalanche.
Clark tells her she didn't fail - it is what he experiences daily.

You never see this kind of father archetype on family tv shows anymore. They always have dorky idiot goofball dads that no one takes seriously. Like dads can either be dorks or abusive jerks and there's no in between. That was one of the things i liked about superman and lois. A rare instance where they try to depict a good, competent father and example of positive masculinity.

When are you referring to as "these days"? Friday Night Lights' Coach Taylor was I guess a decade ago. Archie's dad in Riverdale was more this archetype too. Stiles dad in (MTV's) Teen Wolf. There are also perhaps not biological fathers, but father figures that would fit too. More recently the father/father figures in Stranger Things, Cobra Kai, Mixed-ish, and the Wonder Years reboot, which are family shows. It all depends on what you're watching.

The 1978 movie didn’t really get Superman though. In those movies, he’s just a guy who saves people and smiles at them. No depth or struggle whatsoever. To make matters worse, he gave up his powers for selfish reasons in the sequel. Who is this?
Superman in the show is almost entirely like the comics; he’s a sympathetic Everyman who has actual moral values, not a wisecracking Mary Sue that just preaches about the safety of transportation. Superman in the show is what Zack Snyder’s Superman would’ve become if Zack had finished his five-movie arc for him.

A lot of studios, writers, and people get so focused and preoccupied with the "Super" part that they completely gloss over the "man" part.
What makes Superman who he is isn't the God-like powers, the super-strength, flying, heat-vision, ice breath, enhanced hearing, or anything like thing else he can do with his abilities: It's his character. His sense of right and wrong. His willingness to help because he has a strong sense of optimism and hope. As a Snyderverse apologist, I have to say that the version of Kal-EL in Superman and Lois is by far my favorite live action depiction. Yes, even better then Reeves. This version of Clark is not a mask that Kal puts on as Reeves portrayed. Instead it's Kal's real personality. The true blue, kind hearted, optimistic man of tomorrow. He doesn't care what language you speak or what religion you are, if you need help he is there. He may act a bit bumbley on purpose in a scene or two, but this Clark is not a lie. My favorite quote comes from Abraham Lincoln and I believe it sums up Superman's character perfectly, "Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man’s character, give him power". Superman is the most powerful being on Earth and he uses it to selflessly better the lives of everyone ells. He decides to lead by example and help guide humanity to a better tomorrow.

What I like about the show is that the focus is on Clark’s struggles. Being Superman and saving the world? That’s easy. Clark Kent the father of 2 teen sons? That’s weird. That’s different. That’s the unknown. It’s very similar to how people still consider the Toby Maguire Spider-Man films the best Spider-Man films. The most important aspect, I think, that makes Spider-Man and especially Peter Parker’s Spider-Man work is how much being Spider-Man screws up his life. But he does it anyway because “with great power comes great responsibility.” The interesting part of that is that his powers aren’t all he great. If you look at what he does he’s somewhere between a high C and a solid B. But what makes him so appealing is his struggles. Some characters have to deal with being a monster, or stoping an evil megalomaniac. The vast majority of what he deals with is bank robbers, dropping out of school because of superheroing and paying rent. It’s that connecting fiber that makes readers relate to Spider-Man. And really, all of the Spider-People’s lives suck and yet they choose to be Their universes’ Spider. So, what do all the super powers in the world not prepare Clark Kent for? Being a dad. There is really nothing that can prepare you for that. That’s interesting and relatable and makes Superman human. He’s just Clark Kent.

Some of the best things in the show that really sells it is when Clark runs off to solve some minor problem in some far off corner of the world, like a bridge falling or a bank robbery in Mexico. Clark knows that these areas don't have their own local superheroes so he'll swoop in for a bit and make sure that they know someone is looking out for them. Also, the "I speak all languages" bit is also fantastic for the same reasons.

Excellent observation about "non-conflict oriented, character based motivation." Too many superhero stories are now written around set piece action scenes where the conflict resolution is pretty easy to determine. I haven't liked Superman in many years but Superman & Lois resonates because you can have this basically nice guy trying to raise a family while having these fantastical powers. His niceness becomes refreshing instead of trite and the good/evil dichotomy or shades of gray postmodernism is tossed out in favor of a more nuanced "how does he have a normal life?" For me, the most interesting parts of the show are seeing him in mufti being the nerdy parent to difficult teens. Lois' greatest moment is recalling her miscarriage and showing her non-superpowered son what super strength really looks like.

Because while it _did_ bring in the big drama, the stupendous action and the otherworldly elements, at it's heart, that show was driven by *characters* and *internal conflicts.* It was _Clark Kent's_ story, as he grew _into_ being a hero, and _how_ he learned that was by the very _human_ issues he had to pass through with friends, family, and foes. _Superman & Lois_ is a pretty good follow up because it takes a lot of the humanity cues from its "Big Brother" show.

A burden, yes, but also a gift that he happily uses to help humanity. Because--as we've seen throughout the course of the season--humanity saved him. Love and compassion saved him. And they CONTINUE to save him. He wouldn't be Superman without the people he loves. And he knows that. And fights for that every time he puts on that cape.
Giving Superman a family and therefore forcing the focus to be on Clark--and the responsibility he has to that family as much as he does to the world--was an incredibly smart decision. We see the man behind the crest and we can connect with him on that deeply human level because (hopefully) we all have a Clark Kent in our lives. Someone who sees the best IN us....and someone who wants to be the best FOR us. No matter how hard that may be.

Actually, I like both Tyler Hoechlin's Superman and Henry Cavill's Superman. I see Tyler's as a more 'matured' version, where as Henry's is now just beginning to 'mature and embrace' who he is, and who he plans to be. In this multi-verse, one Superman has been able to grow and become both Kal and Clark, while in the other, Kal is starting his journey to truly become Clark. I think a MoS 2 would start to show that--I got that feeling near the end of ZSJL, especially when Clark is walking, looks up, and then ducks to change into his super suit. I'm just glad that we have what I feel are two different but good Supermen in the DC universes;in fact we've had good Supermen ever since Christopher Reeves, IMHO.

You can say this is like elseworlds Superman, but to that id say if you’re trying to create a shared universe with the most famous American comic character on the planet I don’t think you should make him an elseworld character that fundamentally betrays the essence of the character

Smallville portrayed Clark the best and they were able to play with character development a ton since he was young and still maturing. They showed that the best men are the ones who choose to be good and brave despite their impulses and fears. Clark had to grow into the roll of Superman. He wasn't always a perfectly good guy, and he doesn't have to be portrayed as never struggling with moral dilemmas. He certainly has internal struggles, but he always chooses good in the end, and we take that for granted. For a man who easily wins all his external battles, his inner battles are the most difficult. Still, there's no need to turn him into a villain for a good story.
I like the idea of him struggling with raising kids since his superpowers don't make him a super good person or father. That requires character, care, and wisdom.

Weeping over the guy who just murdered a million innocents, who was threatening to murder billions, isn’t a cute look. Being ‘forced’ to murder Zod was 100% a choice by the writer/director and making Kal-El complicit in the death of millions and also the guy who snaps necks and cries about it while victims are suffocating under the debris he just helped create was a deliberate choice. We had already seen plenty of Clark’s ‘flaws’, he was practically nothing but flaws, and yet there was zero payoff for making him grounded since we don’t see him overcome those flaws to become a mythic hero.
Also saying “they had their chance” about a bunch of unborn babies is pretty psychopathic for Superman (you can express dismay about not being able to save both earth and the baby Kryptonians without sounding like a villain).
The issue with Snyder is that the heroes and villains all agreed with each other. Pa Kent and Zod were saying the same things about humanity. Then Clark agrees but does the right thing anyway… only his reasoning isn’t supported by the writing. And then he helps Zod kill millions before killing Zod himself. Superman can fly and shoot lasers out of his eyes, nothing about him is ‘real’, so turning him into some edgy teenager who grows into a dour man who then murders someone is either a betrayal or a very wrong way to leave your mark on a franchise. I mean Batman is right there (Snyder’s grizzled cynical Bruce wasn’t bad but he should have been a foil to Clark’s optimism, not someone who just acted like an older more experienced version of that universe’s Clark).

People complaining about "he's not Superman" because it breaks the predisposed opinion that he couldn't possibly be anything else other than hope and inspiration, which was clearly stated in MoS, BvS, and the Snydercut, because of his realistic tendencies. In contrast, Zod only saw one path to victory; it's the mission and nothing else, because he was born and designed that way. Superman, born of natural birth, had to find different ways to win.
