I have a young star fruit tree that wants to grow up when I got it it was small but looked like it was going to bushy like I wanted but now it growing up what is the best time and way to prune the tree so it will grow out instead of up
Just keep pruning it back and it will continue to branch out. They're very resilient, so don't worry about cutting it back too much! You can prune them anytime. If you cut it back now (November) it will put off your fruit production for a few months, so you may want to wait until after it fruits.
Hi there! Usually well-established trees do not need to be watered after the first year. Unfortunately, yellowing leaves can be a sign of BOTH too much or too little water. Our team of Info and Education Specialists are here to help. It's best if you can send photos and also a description of the tree's history to info@rockledgegardens.com
Starfruit is pretty easy to grow in central Florida. They prefer a little shade when they are younger, but perform best if in full sun when mature. You can use any citrus fertilizer on starfruit every 3-4 months, skipping the winter season since they will be partially dormant. *There is a fertilizer ban in Brevard County during the summer to protect the lagoon, so make sure to check with your local county extension office before you fertilize. As far as pruning goes, that depends on what your situation is. If size is a concern, starfruit can be aggressively pruned in early spring and will still bear fruit in a few months. If size isn't an issue, then just trim any of the leggy branches or branches that are crossing.
