I was 8 when this phillies team did this in 1993. I was living in roxborough. I can still remember the tv we watched these games on and my mom and the whole neighborhood running out banging pots and pans after each playoff win. But man, I remember the next day after that loss to toronto. Seemed like the city was never the same again
Great documentary! I was 8 years old in 1993 and this Phillies team was the one that got me into Phillies baseball! Been a loyal fan since. Hope we can win another world series this year! Go Phillies!
Wow, 1st off great video! So many memories here. I was 11 that season and turned 12 the same day as game 5 of the NLCS. This is still and I'm pretty sure always will be my favorite team of all time. To that point that is the 1st winning team in Philly I can remember winning. I was at the 4:40AM doubleheader with my Grandfather and stayed for every bit of it! That was the greatest thing ever to be out that late, stop for breakfast and get in after 6AM. So many memorable moments. A complete team even the lesser mentioned guys like Ricky Jordan who was always solid giving Kruk a break and as a pinch hitter. And Milt Thompson who was a clutch hitter and among the league leaders of hitting with runners in scoring position. Also played great defense and had that big catch in San Diego to rob a Grand Slam.
I was 5 and turned 6 during this season. Fell in love with baseball and the Phillies. Wore out the “whatever it takes dude! Tape. Love this team and every single one of them.
Everyone remembers the iconic Carter HR as what knocked the Phils out but in all honesty, it was Mitch William's 8th inning in Game 4 that cost them the series when they gave up 6 runs in the 8th to eventually lose 15-14 when being up 14-9 entering the top of the 8th!!! This game was a heartbreaking loss as I believe they woulda won the series if they just held on here!!! Regardless, thank you for that magical summer of 93 as I will always remember that summer for losing my virginity along with the Phils unexpected season for the ages!!!
Yep...That's really where the series was lost. I remember that game so well. I remember having to go to bed, when we were up in the fifth inning, and my mom telling me the next morning that we'd lost and I couldn't believe it. Man, just SUCH a bummer!
It was a pretty magical summer … I was 22, so my virginity was long gone, but I was in a really good band and was dating a 10. I’d get a call to move to Seattle that September, and a whole new adventure would begin.
My all-time favorite Philly team regardless of sport. I was 13 years old. My father and grandfather owned a restaurant/bar in Chester County. At that time my dad would open the restaurant in the morning at 6:30. Go home at noon to get some sleep. Go back around 7:00 to close the bar around midnight. During the summer I went with him every night to hang out with all the old guys coming off swingshift at the steel plant and watch the Phillies. It was basically a (mostly) black version of Cheers. Everybody knew everybody going back decades and generations. It was such a good time. When I think back to my childhood thats the image that instantly pops in my head every single time. I loved this team.
I'm surprised that there was no mention of Danny Jackson on the pitching staff. Granted, he was hit hard in his one World Series start but his clutch pitching and World Series winning experience with the 1985 Royals and 1990 Reds helped from an experience standpoint. He did pitch well during the regular season and NLCS. Schilling would probably be a Hall of Famer if not for controversial remarks. Also, Joe Carter should be a Hall of Famer for his consistent run production during his career.
That year, the Phillies also made a run at trading for a breakout pitcher just entering his prime. His name was Randy Johnson. But the deal fell through because Philly wasn't willing to include top prospect Mike Lieberthal, who'd have a decent, but unspectacular career.
There was absolutely zero chance Seattle was trading Johnson so I don't know where you get your information from. As for Lieberthal, unspectacular? He was a 2x all star, won a Gold Glove, and is on the Phillies Wall of Fame. How is that unspectacular?
@@Rockhound6165 Reports at the time say otherwise. Toronto was also making a run at him at the same time, but ultimately pivoted to Rickey Henderson instead. I know it sounds nuts, but 93 was Johnson's first truly great year at age 29 and was also a soon to be FA. Makes total sense why they'd shop him at the time. It's obviously a good thing they didn't trade him.
The deal was Schilling, Rivera, and Lieberthal. Considering how Schilling pitched that post season, not sure that would have put them over the top. And even in future years, it would have been Johnson instead of Schilling as a star ace on an otherwise bad team

Loved that Phillies team. Really, a lot of the players were capable of repeating the performances from 1993. It was not this crazy fluke that they were good in '93 the way everyone makes it out to be. Injuries kind of got the best of them in 1994 and a lot of guys when they were actually healthy were still putting up good numbers before the strike ended the season. The main issue with their poor record prior to the strike was their inability to keep everyone who had contributed throughout 1993 all healthy. That's a problem a lot of teams go through. Dykstra always had a history of performing at a high level in the postseason. But he truly went into beast mode during that whole 1993 postseason.
True. Many people forget that in 1995 the team got off to a good start, and led the NL East from mid-April until around the 4th of July. A fair number of 93 Phils were still there in 95.
I really loved the 22 Phillies with their premium pitching by Wheels, Ranger, and Nola. These guys solidified what pitchers want to do to be successful. Bryce Harper and Schwarbs played phenomenal with the bats, and Rhys' homer significantly changed the narrative

Those Phillies were scrappy. I still think that series against the Braves was one of the few times where one team lead in every statistical category, but still lost the series.
No offensively they matched the Braves very well. The Phillies led on Wlaks, on base percentage, runs scored, pitchers doing complete games etc…so maybe not the “preferred stats” but they ed in stats that angered to win games.
When the Phillies won the pennant in 1993, I was thinking "Go Phillies!!" "Win it all for Conway Twitty!!" Conway (Harold Lloyd Jenkins) passed away June 5 of that year. Conway Twitty was a huge Phillies fan and even owned their triple A team. Conway Twitty was one of my favorite country music legends and among the best. Oh, Lenny Dykstra (Nails), Pete Incavilia (Inkie) ,John "I am not a" Kruk ,Darren Daulton (Dutch), and Mitch Williams ( Wild Thing) were my favorites on the fightin' Phils.
You also fail to acknowledge the Phillies issue as Shortstop that saw a revolving door of Juan Bell, Kim Batiste, Jeff Millette, and Mariano Duncan.... the position was not stabilized until the call up of Kevin Stocker, which allowed for the platoon of Duncan with Mickey Morandini at 2nd base for the much of the 2nd half of the season
Curt Schilling was like the Philadelphia Phillies version of TO. Outspoken and arrogant with a chip on his shoulder, but he pitched his heart out for this team.
That's how MY 10 year old self felt when Iverson and the Sixers dominated the final minute of Gm 1 of the 2001 NBA finals. All for it to come CRASHING!
LOL, all you saw in the old ballparks from the 30's through the 60's was ads throughout the parks. Back in those "good ole days" everyone loves so much.
Sometimes you just have random years where you have a collection of good, not great, players and they all have career years at the same time. Couple that with getting good injury luck and you have a year like this. It also helped, and is rarely mentioned that their lineup could platoon you to death.
I was a senior at Drexel in ‘93. We’d get those $4 Phillies Franks tix, or wait to scalp after the anthem. The first person to spot a feral cat at the Vet got to pick who bought the first round at the 700 Level.
Every now and then, there is someone that doesn’t agree or doesn’t like the fact that the 1993 Phillies were the best team in the National League The ‘93 Phillies were NOT a one hit wonder
I was 9 in Overbrook park and remember waking up to find out Joe Carter was the Phillies killer and Mitch Williams was a villain........... Cuz, that pain is still real with the 94' strike......
I wouldn't be too hard on Mitch. He gave all he had that season and by that point he was totally out of gas. Fregosi mismanaged the bullpen in that game. I would have gone with Roger Mason, Larry Anderson, and maybe even Tommy Greene or Danny Jackson out of the pen. As I said, Mitch was done by that point but even then the pitch Carter hit out wasn't a meatball, he just got a good swing on it.
Most of the guys from that team were in their 30s and spent over half of that season playing on hard astro turf. They made a lot happen during that '93 campaign, but they probably couldn't hold up in the years after that, which might've contributed to the downfall.
John Smoltz was traded by Detroit for Doyle Alexander. Hardly a homegrown talent. Greg Maddux was a free agent pickup from the Cubs. Fun fact! The Cubs offered Greg more money to resign but, he opted to go to Atlanta.
1st off. very well done video. Kurt should be in HoF. just because they dont like him and or his politics doesnt matter. Even if he came out full brown racist. Doesnt matter. Even if he di worst of the worst...... doesnt matter. HoF is about the best PLAYERS nothing else. not a popularity contest, not about how nice they are etc. 1 of good 5 reasons i refuse to watch pro sports anymore. you give someone even a simple reporter power over someone they will find a way to abuse it. 2nd MLB knew people were juicing. and did nothing for almost 10 years. probably longer.... but we can prove 10. when they finally got some public backlash then they slowly pointed blame at the players. never once taking any of the blame. even though its their league, their players, their rules. they made all that money off them players. then threw them under the bus. Owners, coaches etc should of been life time banned during that era as well as the players. but ofc mlb did nothing. i can go on but seriously Major leage sports are a cancer to the usa. they sadly bring no good to most anyone. their citys or players. most players no matter their league etc are bankrupt within 5 years retirement. nfl players are dying at early ages. seriously where is the value of life? fans say the love the players? but i dont see it.
This was the funnest season of any team I root for. This was a team of have nots, never was', and never will be's who caught the tiger by the tail and did the impossible. I went to a few games that season and the Vet was always packed and rocking. And I'm convinced that had the Phillies held on in game 6 they would have blasted the Jays in game 7.
It got passed since, but at the time 1993 had the highest attendance numbers in Phillies history. The Game 7 take is not bad at all - coming back from down 5-1, off of two straight wins, there would have been a lot of momentum there for a team that had gotten leads in five of six games as was
Give credit to Padres General Manager Jack McKeon, who was fleeced by the Phillips when he traded John Kruk and Randy Ready for OF Chris James. Trader Jack also left Dave Hollins off the 40- Man roster and the Phillies astutely claimed him. I know Dave Hollins was a diabetic it seems like his career ended very abruptly. I can’t remember exactly what happened to Dave.
@Rockhound6165 Yeah, Amaro has the job now mostly because of his GM role. I had to include him in the sentence about the announcers because he did play for the ‘93 team (albeit briefly) before he became a (much maligned) GM.
I still blame Fregosi. I understand the "you dance with the girl that brought you" mentality of Managers, but it was obvious against the Braves in the NLCS (and even the last couple weeks of the regular season) that Williams had a "dead arm" from overuse. Fregosi kept running him out there.............
I get so tired of people calling Smoltz a Atlanta home grown talent. He was traded to the Braves on 8/12/87 for Doyle Alexander and didn't even spend one season in the minors with them before making his debut. As a team, Atlanta had little to do with Smoltz development as a pitcher.
I would love to know the batting numbers on a guy who made an error to extend the game only to later be put into a position to when it with an RBI....... This seems to happen an incredibly high percentage of times. Just like the guy who makes a spectacular play in the previous inning then turning around and getting it hit the next inning....... It makes some sense logically as one's adrenaline would be amped in either situation, perhaps leading to better acuity
If they could have won game 6, Schilling pitches game 7 and starts his big game legs y early with a wirld series win, also at the trade deadline , Phillies almost had a trade for Randy Johnson with the Expos, Phillies did bot want to trade their young catcher Mike Liverthal….. and we seen what schilling and the big untin can do on the same team in the playoffs
As good as they were in winning the W.S. 2008 .... they would have repeated HAD THEY NOT RAN INTO THE VAUNTED NEW YORK YANKEES ..... having won four out five years in 90s plus 2000 ..... in 2009 ... the returning Phillies looked good to grab a pair ..... until the Yankees played to well to be denied. Loved the series and unfortunately THE LATEST too far in the past !
I also think the bit about Dykstra having "had help from private investigators" is kind of BS. Of course, it's BS that Dykstra himself put out there. But nonetheless, I just think it's Dykstra trying to get you to say "wow, he's smart!" and be provocative in any way he can be at this point in his life. Even if it means selling his own baseball abilities short. Dude is just starved for attention and has no shame. Dykstra was a great ballplayer. But he's also a known pathological liar. He has nothing to lose at this point by telling everyone he hired PIs. He has no good reputation to speak of at this point. So why not lie and get people to say "oh, dang! that's gangster right there!"? Might as well if you're Dykstra and your reputation is in the toilet but you need to somehow sell books. Now, he might have actually hired PIs to get dirt on umps; but I've watched enough of his games from 1993 and I didn't see any unfair strike zone that favored Dykstra at all. I'm a lot more inclined to believe that Dykstra said what he said to generate interest for his book (back in 2015). And if he did in fact actually hire PIs to get dirt on umps, from what I've seen of the 1993 Phillies (and it's quite a bit of games and at-bats), it didn't really seem to do Dykstra much of any good. The guy just had a good eye at the plate and worked a lot of walks. He always had a good eye even back in his days with the Mets. It's just in 1993 he was finally healthy and not platooning with anyone so he had a ton of at-bats that season to create all those walks. In fact, I saw him more often get hosed and rung up on pitches that were balls than I ever did see him have strikes called balls in his favor in my time watching him during this period ('93-'94).
This Phillies team was my heroes when i was 12 i actually wore number 4 bc of lenny dykstra and come to find out what a scum bag he was and still is just ashame bc he def played the game like your supposed to. Thats why chase utley was so loved in this city bc of the way he played hard every day and actually running out ground balls
Schilling should be in the HOF . I sick of the the fact that its outside noise that keeps him out . I don't care about his politics or his fail business .
So let me point out the one mistake that is pretty early in your video: Curt Schilling was NOT the ace of the Phillies staff in 1993, that was Terry Mullholland and a strong argument can be made for Tommy Greene. Schilling would not be deemed the Phillies ace until 1997
Smoltz spent less than two full seasons in Detroit’s system, and debuted as a Brave, so i was considering that “homegrown”, even though the Braves didn’t technically do all of the growing
This is a dumb video. “No players from this team won an mvp or cy young” they didn’t win a WS either- shall we nostalgically remember every losing team for all time?

Those Phillies were scrappy. I still think that series against the Braves was one of the few times where one team lead in every statistical category, but still lost the series.
No offensively they matched the Braves very well. The Phillies led on Wlaks, on base percentage, runs scored, pitchers doing complete games etc…so maybe not the “preferred stats” but they ed in stats that angered to win games.
11 years old then brought so many memories for me too I was so excited
I was 19 living in Mayfair. My buddies and I carried a small radio around every night with us drinking beers and listening to the Phils
I will never Forget my 93 Phightins who really did come out of nowhere. It was Awesome to see them take out the Braves!
Great content. Nice job
I was 10 and that 15 to 14 game was a gut punch 😢😢😢😢
That's how MY 10 year old self felt when Iverson and the Sixers dominated the final minute of Gm 1 of the 2001 NBA finals. All for it to come CRASHING!
I’m a Pirates fan but I still really liked this team
It still hurts.
Look around the stadium when the footage allows. Zero corporate advertising.
What a year! Such a fun team! That joe carter homerun was crushing!
I was a senior at Drexel in ‘93. We’d get those $4 Phillies Franks tix, or wait to scalp after the anthem. The first person to spot a feral cat at the Vet got to pick who bought the first round at the 700 Level.
Every now and then, there is someone that doesn’t agree or doesn’t like the fact that the 1993 Phillies were the best team in the National League
The ‘93 Phillies were NOT a one hit wonder
Phillies aren't afraid of the braves.
@Rockhound6165 thank you, that's a good point I never thought about......
One reliever away. Had Toronto on the ropes
1st off. very well done video.
Great vid
The coolest Phillies team of All Time! Jeez how i miss that team
this was a dope video
This was the funnest season of any team I root for. This was a team of have nots, never was', and never will be's who caught the tiger by the tail and did the impossible. I went to a few games that season and the Vet was always packed and rocking. And I'm convinced that had the Phillies held on in game 6 they would have blasted the Jays in game 7.
It got passed since, but at the time 1993 had the highest attendance numbers in Phillies history. The Game 7 take is not bad at all - coming back from down 5-1, off of two straight wins, there would have been a lot of momentum there for a team that had gotten leads in five of six games as was
@@zachr26 Schilling would have pitched game 7 as well.
Dykstra. What crazy dude.
I remember Lenny Dykstra having an amazing ws only to be overshadowed by Carter's hr.
Curt Schilling SHOULD be in the hall of fame
A lotta teams conquered that team of the 90’s there guy
The Headley's choice doctrine!
I remember this team! I couldn't stand them because they were always winning. 😀
John Kruk is baseball in human form
Love the video. Who are the 4 players that announce for the Phils now? I know Kruk does TV and Stocker and LA do the radio. Who am I missing?
Thanks! The fourth is Ruben Amaro, Jr, who played 25 games for the ‘93 Phillies
The Phils also use Schmidt on Sundays at home.
@@zachr26 don't forget that Amaro was the Phillies GM for a while.
@Rockhound6165 Yeah, Amaro has the job now mostly because of his GM role. I had to include him in the sentence about the announcers because he did play for the ‘93 team (albeit briefly) before he became a (much maligned) GM.
Still fucking hurts.
Putting Williams in was the worst goddamn idea during the playoffs.
He just wasn’t on.
This team was the first for me noticing several jacked up players. 🤔
Greatest assembly of mulletude ever in MLB
Schilling should be in the HOF, it’s ridiculous
Carter really screwed up what could have been the most legendary team ever.
Instead they are just a legendary team that only Philly people know about.
The NYY were the team of the "90's." The Braves were the N.L. Team of the "90s" 0:25
Loved the series and unfortunately THE LATEST too far in the past !
that was their only winning season from 1987 to 2000
Nice video. Are you planning on doing what-ifs any time soon? LMK if you’d like suggestions on scenarios :)
they were Best Phil's. whole league was Juiced in 93'.
Wtf was Mitch Williams about? Here's a guy who seemingly every sppearance, walked the bases loaded, then struck out the side.
Needs more Eisenreich and Imcaviglia
Leonard Kyle will never pay for a beer in Philadelphia
Well John Kruk was on the team things are gonna happen!
John Smoltz came from the Detroit system
Sing for him, John Kruk...
The 2021 Giants were the greatest 1 hit wonder imo
Yeah I’m still trying to figure that season out. Didn’t win before or after.
Schilling should be in the HOF . I sick of the the fact that its outside noise that keeps him out . I don't care about his politics or his fail business .
Not a bad video but this idea that Dick Allen belongs in the Hall of Fame is pretty silly. To each his own, though.
So let me point out the one mistake that is pretty early in your video: Curt Schilling was NOT the ace of the Phillies staff in 1993, that was Terry Mullholland and a strong argument can be made for Tommy Greene. Schilling would not be deemed the Phillies ace until 1997
2024 phillies don't have this kind of heart and the wrong manager
It was Kruks sexy body distracting the other teams
🖕 means plunk
Why do you take every opportunity to insult our team!!!
I’m a Phillies fan! Definitely not here to drag the Phillies through the mud
>home grown
>John Smoltz
WRONG!!!!!!!!!!!!
August 12, 1987: Doyle Alexander was traded by the Braves to the Detroit Tigers for John Smoltz
Smoltz spent less than two full seasons in Detroit’s system, and debuted as a Brave, so i was considering that “homegrown”, even though the Braves didn’t technically do all of the growing
That team was so juiced it’s not even funny. They didn’t win before or after 93. Not sustainable.
Kurk don't chew gum
Man do ur fucking research that quote wasn’t said about the 93 Phillies it was said about the 74 flyers
It was also said about the 1993 Phillies.
@@zachr26 no

I wanted to watch but couldn't stand the gay voice 2 minutes in
He hasn't been gay that long
This is a dumb video. “No players from this team won an mvp or cy young” they didn’t win a WS either- shall we nostalgically remember every losing team for all time?
