Bohm was a great musician and was very fortunate to have had the great German conductor Bruno Walter's generous support as a young man just learning his trade.
Re: Bohm’s alleged ‘Nazism’. I’ve heard so many stories about the behaviour of Astro-German musicians in the 30s and 40s and I’m hesitant to believe any of them. I don’t think people who have never lived under a totalitarian regime have earned the right to criticise the actions of those who have.
I agree completely - far too many people have raced to judgement on Böhm, Karajan, Strauss and others - the fear under which these people lived their lives is, thankfully, unimaginable to us today.

@Schöneberger Must have written that in the middle of the night. Sorry. It happened in the hunting lodge of basso profundo Gottlob Frick. Walter Berry told me that Fritz had seen the warning on the stairway, but had drunk a few glasses of wine & hence forgot about it. He also hadn't redone his boot laces. He'd telephoned his wife Eva & said he was tired. Voilà.

One rather important detail that isn't "remembered" in this video memoir is Böhm's support for Nazism, which proved helpful in advancing his career during the 1930s and early 40s.
Documentaries about John Wayne don't mention that he voted for Richard Nixon, and thus was partly responsible for the mass bombings of Vietnam and the Watergate scandal. Many american actors, artists and musicians you like were members of organisations of that country and supported their government at that time. Same with many East Block ones.
