It's incredible to see the amount of Napoleon's future marshals who fought in this campaign.

23:30 we croats later fought under napoleon. He famously stated "give me 100,000 croats and i can conquer the world" when witnessing croatian hussars in battle, our hussars were famous across europe and were the original hussars

@@saldana7395 yes. Hussars originated in croatia and serbia as a guerilla light cavalry force that harassed ottomans. The origin of the word husar is gusar(pirate) due to their hit and run tactics.
As for the quote it went like this
      Napoleon: who are those soldiers?
      Marmont: croats
Napoleon: they are the most fearsome soldiers in europe. If i had 100 000, i could conquer the world
During the battle of berezina in the campaign of 1812, croat hussars under general šljivar came to napoleons aid and saved his life. His response was "croats! Am i glad to see you!"

Well this is a pleasant surprise.
One thing to mention about this series is that the channel they collaborated with, PMF Productions, started his own Italian campaign series before EHTV. Even going to Italy and mapping out things like troop movements. Personally? I prefer their series to EHTV's. They go into more detail with the military strategy and mindset of the commanders. He kinda paused his series to help EHTV with theirs. I highly recommend you check them out as well.

Im not sure if you’ve ever heard of Kriegspiel, but it was a game made by the Prussians in order to simulate battle as realistically as they could, and train their officers.
The reason I bring it up is because there’s a group I recently joined called the International Kriegsspiel Society, and they Play an online version of the Game. They actually do a great job of making the game more approachable for non-military people. The main time periods they simulate are the American civil war, and the Napoleonic wars. For example, in a few days there’s going to be a huge Waterloo Kriegsspiel. So I was wondering if maybe you’d be interested in playing it for the gaming channel? It’s definetly very different from most games you play there, but I think you might appreciate it, especially considering the time periods they cover.
As always, I love your channel, keep up the great work!

Then there’s also the Kriegspiel chess variant practically two players knowing where their pieces are (but don’t know where their opponents are. (You play on 2 separate boards) and there’s on judge or umpire that says if the move is legal or not.

I saw a docuseries on Grant by the History Channel. Grant wasn't only a phenomenal General, he was a great President and stellar person.
Not selling his slave, but instead having him freed when he could really use the money, continuing Lincoln's legacy and utterly obliterating the Ku Klux Klan.
It confuses me that his statues are being taken down along with Lincoln. Clearly most of my fellow Americans are ignorant of our history.

Artillery being used to pin down soldiers is basicly a extension of the of arrows. If I'm not mistaken arrows where also mainly used to keep peoples heads down whilst moving so that they would not be able to respond effectively to other attacks. So similar concept I guess. 🤙

Great video! I always love your Napoleonic reactions.
One thing I'd like to add (I don't think it was mentioned in the video) is that Napoleon, in his terms with the Piedmontes, included the crossing at Valenza. This was because he knew that Beaulieu would find out about the terms one way or another and would think that Napoleon would cross at Valenza. However, his actual plan was to cross at Piacenza all along. That's why Beaulieu had all his forces ready to defend Valenza while Napoleon got a headstart to Piacenza.

    • @celston51
      @celston51 ปีที่แล้ว +13

@@mrfalloutlore5973 Something like that. The French Assembly allowed Corsican nationalist Pasquale Paoli to return thinking he'd be more palatable to run the island. Paoli for his part disliked the execution of Louis XVI and backed the royalists, even going so far as to asking Britain to make Corsica a protectorate. Paoli also sabotaged the French expedition to Sardinia which forced Napoleon to make a choice. Napoleon and his entire family disavowed Paoli and from this point onwards, Napoleon identified more as French than Italian-Corsican.

His father died at 38 in 1785 of stomach cancer, but his mother Letiza lived to 85, dying in 1836, outliving her son by 15 years and her husband, who was three years her elder, by 51.
This is the same timeframe as Eliza outliving Alexander by 50 years.

@@MonkeyBanjo7 She doesn't get much coverage because of her sons, but yeah she was there through it all. Corsica became French in 1769, so this woman lived through the reigns of Louis XV, XVI, the French Revolution and the myriad governments that entailed, the rise and fall of her son, the Congress of Vienna and the return of Louis XVIII, Charles X until his abdication in 1830, and 1/3 of the reign of Louis-Phillipe.

He was average for the time but many of the dashing heroes of the time, werent.

25:50 that trick has been used for thousands of years. It's a classic because more often then not it works. The best way to use this is to fill the tents with straw and when the enemy attacks your camp have fire arrows shot into the tents then attack the attackers. Trapped between fire and you the enemy is doomed. Great way to eliminate vanguard calvalry.

Looting and pillaging is a common issue through the centuries.
In WW1 when the Germans conducted their last great offensive in the West one of the issues for German commanders was that German troops captured Allied supplies and as they had been short of food and drink they gorged themselves and got drunk rather than continuing the attack. This helped buy time for the Allies to organise and counter attack.

Really looking forward for the Total war series, im a big fan of total war games.
But before you play the game, i have a tip to say. in case you don't know, you can adjust the army size in the "game option".
2nd, some of total war games can be really rough especially if you doing it for youtube, so it might be a good a idea to use trainer (i use the most trustworthy "WeMod"), but of course don't use the "god mode"

Didnt Napoleon also make the famous quote: Men will fight and die for a piece of coloured ribbon.

The Levée en masse combined with the school for officers and opportunities for everybody was great boon for the French. They made good use for both unemployment and fertile lands, while still being the place to be for everyone in Europe to see modernization on all levels.

40 miles in less than 36 hours!
Makes me think of a quote from Napoleon, I believe this was about Austerlitz: "I only won by marching", meaning in the early days his army got a solid advantage as Napoleon knew to have them move quickly.

The quote was about Ulm not Austerlitz.

    You mentioned Napoleon’s height.
    Two things played against him.
He was usually seen next to the French Guard.
And Wellington was well over Six Feet Tall.

Also, even before that, I would think that soldiers would not exactly follow the same height distribution as men of their country would, but be taller than the national average. At the very least, militaries tend to have a minimum height they require men to be to be eligible to enlist. So if you're slightly below average height compared to all men in your country, you'd be significantly below average compared to the military.

How was he able to coordinate troops and issue commands in the heat of battle?
