Agreed. Alex Smith was great. It was a brilliant decision by Andy to have Mahomes watch and learn from Alex Smith that first season. Patrick is obviously on a different level than all other QBs and he already had greatness inside him, but I think Alex really helped him in how to be an elite NFL leader without loosing himself which we’ve seen happen to young QBs when they come into the league. Don’t get me wrong, I think Mahomes would’ve been great either way. I just believe Alex was the perfect role model for him. ❤️🙏🏼🏟️🏈🏆🏆🏆🏆CHIEFS KINGDOM FOREVER🏆🏆🏆🏆🏈🏟️🙏🏼❤️
First of all great work on the video. I’ve been a Chiefs fan since 1990 and I still can’t believe we’ve had all this success. Drafting Pat changed the entire course of the franchise.
Thanks for the timeline here. Such a job by the Chiefs to make sure they drafted Mahomes and then built some other pieces around him with a great offensive mind in Reid and Spags the defensive mind. The team in this short span has evolved and not the high scoring , high flying offensive team they were in the first two or three seasons, but I think their more cerebral approach at offense without Tyreek has actually been a major blessing in disguise and let Mahomes mature and build his game, especially the last two seasons. What a fun team to watch!
Great video! Just one minor correction: the Chiefs did get the first round bye during the 2019 playoffs but it was as the 2 seed, not the 1 seed. Obviously not a big deal, but I'll never forget that because of how they got the 2 seed (for anyone that doesnt remember, that was the game where they needed to beat the Chargers AND have the Patriots lose to the Dolphins, and Ryan Fitzpatrick pulled out some insane Fitzmagic to take the lead and the win over New England in the last couple of minutes. Kevin Harlan was calling the Chiefs game but noticed what was happening in the Dolphins/Patriots one and started gving a play by play on that one too. He was asked "I'm confused, which game are you calling" he answered with my favorite moment in NFL broadcasting, "I'm calling both games!" There's an NFL Turning Point video about it, I'd highly recommend it, it's great)
The magic of Andy Reid is in his knowledge of everything that he stores and recalls. He credits EVERYBODY and finds no loss of prestige in listening to reputable people as well as the stadium custodian with an observer's suggestion. Patience and learning as you listen makes this humble man wear his greatness like a comfortable old shirt. Who is dumb enough to criticize that?
Quick correction. The GM when Mahomes was drafted was John Dorsey. Brett Veach was basically a lead scout and he was the one who sold Reid and Dorsey on Mahomes.
The 2 playoff loses to the Colts took a piece of my soul. For those that don’t remember, the No Punt Game vs Peyton Manning and the 45-44 loss to Andrew Luck.
Mahomes Getting hurt , trading Tyreek Hill, taught KC to "Play a Different Way", an playing hurt in the playoffs, WE Saw how VALUABLE Mahomes REALLY IS
Coaching is important in character-maintenance in this sport. Success comes with patiently doing your job, and we have seen that in '23 more than ever. To see it with superstars at nearly every position is impressive, especially with so many young players. What the Chiefs have is the character-building coaches and kids listening to them with Superbowl winning experience. A lot of them have TWO rings, and a few have THREE Superbowl Champion rings.
I think that Bucs team still beats KC if they are healthy..BUT, I do think KC beats the Rams if Ford is just 1/2 inch farther back..KC being in that SB would have definitely saved from the from 13-3 snooze that was that NE/LA Super Bowl
Never thought Brady could be matched but only a year or two after his retirement we have Mahomes who, if he keeps playing like this for the next 10-15 seasons, could very well match Brady's stats or surpass them.
Just a note. Veach was not GM during the 2017 season. He was involved in the process of drafting PM15 though. The GM was the great John Dorsey. Who parted ways with the organization the following year.
I got to be at the Texans game. That was the weirdest crowd I've been a part of... I thought one fan was going to punch me because I needed to pee and get a break from the mess going on the field.
Undoubtedly, Patrick Mahomes deserves the most credit for this dynasty, but Steve Spagnuolo doesn't get NEARLY enough credit. I will never not be of the mindset that losing that AFC Championship to the Pats was the absolute best thing that could have happened to this team. I, without a shadow of a doubt believe the Chiefs would have beaten the Rams in that Super Bowl, and teams that win Super Bowls aren't typically in a hurry to be firing/replacing members of their coaching staff. I'm talking of course about then Chiefs Defensive Coordinator, Bob Sutton. Sutton was at least two years overdue for being fired at that point, and as great as Mahomes was in 2018, even he couldn't overcome Sutton's awful defensive schemes in the biggest games. So, everyone should give a big thanks to Tom Brady. If the Pats don't beat the Chiefs in that AFC Championship, then the Chiefs likely never fire Bob Sutton, the defense stays awful while the offense slowly declines, and Andy Reid is still seen as the coach who can't ever win the big games.
At the beginning of the video (where you're talking about the 2017 draft and Mahomes), you say "GM Brett Veach". He wasn't the GM at the time John Dorsey was. Veach was the scout who discovered Mahomes
