California should withhold tax revenue, if the government witholds help. Given the size of California's economy and the welfare dependency of red states, I wonder who will come out ahead?
That is exactly what Newsome should do, but I'm not sure how he could do it. The Red moocher states would collapse within a year if the river of cash flowing into their states from the Blue states were to dry up. CA is the engine of America's economy. It receives only 65 cents for every Federal tax dollar that it sends out. Where does all that extra money go? To basket case states like Mike Johnson's Louisiana, Mitch McConnell's KY, etc.
That's exactly what I said. Given that 97% of FEMA's income comes from the federal budget, and California provides 13% of income tax for all states: if they refuse to disburse the money back to us in our time of need, I think we should just stop paying our Federal taxes, and maybe double our state taxes so we can take care of our own needs
I live in a red state & am in the basement of the poverty level, but I wholeheartedly support California withholding tax revenue if aid is denied them. "Sorry half of the US, you told us that we had to pull ourselves up by our own bootstraps, so we are using our own money to do that. Have a nice day! 😃"
I feel as if all states should do this. We are long overdue for such a movement. We should all be tax resisters anymore. And we should all do it together, as a huge number, make an impact. If there are enough of us, they can't imprison us all.
And there will be zero people in Los Angeles and other areas burned threatening FEMA because they believe there's a conspiracy to steal their property, unlike what happened after Hurricane Helene.

I live here. The last MAGA person I know IRL has been my mechanic for a lifetime. I contacted him about my hybrid’s first service and he responded with two political rants. First contact we’ve had in months. He then went on to say the wildfires were deliberately caused by Democrats in order to make way for high density housing. He said he had two friends that were Democrats in Pacific Palisades that lost their home that would confirm this. I know he’s lying to me and I know he knows he’s lying to me, but I didn’t press him on that other than calling it pure bullshit. I said I want to be in the room when he says this out loud to their face. I told him how badly I feel for him; that he has gone this far to repeat such a disgusting thing during a crisis when he knows better. But that’s where we are. MAGA will turn on people they’ve known for decades and parrot hurtful bullshit. They know it’s wrong, but will back it up because their agenda says so. I’m done. The last friend I have to cut off…

Not to mention Im in NC, close to chinney rock, and when we received support from the federal government, a notable chunk of that money had to by default been contributed by California. After all, only two red states contribute more than they take in federal welfare benefits. And NC aint one of em
It was mentioned to me but without collaboration but it sounds pretty accurate that if you combine the dollars fed into the national government from California and New York you exceed the contribution from all the red States combined. It's because we are americans.

Are the people who want to hold up aid to California going to ask why 44 republican lawmakers in California voted *against* forest management in December? I mean what on earth could go wrong with so much new growth after last year's rains and super hot temps (that were forecasted) drying it all out ?
They did it so that their orange leader could say some garbage about turning on a fawcet in No Cal, mumble that not enough forests had their floors raked, and later claim that he "fixed" the problem.
That cost money! No republican will spend money. They want tax breaks for the wealthy instead! Every republican in Congress voted against funding FEMA for 2024!! Even those who, months later, had their hands out for money after the hurricanes!
I cannot understand the recent outrage over ASL interpreters. Like what's next, yelling because someone has a guide dog? Scolding someone for wearing a prosthetic?
The DHH (deaf hard of hearing) community suffers in disasters due to the lack of communication. Imagine having a hearing loss during an evacuation. Not "hearing" instructions because ther are no ASL instructions or personal who know that hearing impaired need to see your face to "hear" directions. The MAGATS are self centered people lacking compassion.
I worked fire camp in CA back in the 90s, and Hurricane crews in the 80 in FL, and "Nature just be weird" and you can never tell what a fire or cane or nado will take and what she will leave. But let me change the oil on out Destructo Weather Machine and program what to save 😂😂😂
Apparently you have no concept of 'fire weather and mapping' that others in that fire camp kept track of nor did you bother to ask anyone knowledgeable. At the Sunlight Basin fire camp I worked in 1979 in Montana, a thermal column started up nearby just after I got to the camp. One of the fire bosses noted my alarmed glances at this "chimney" of flame and smoke punching up past 20,000 feet and told me not to worry, it wasn't going to come this way. And it didn't. They explained that fire behavior depends on terrain, moisture, fuel and regional weather trends (both wind and rain) and their interactions. These have both micro- and macro-influences on fire behaviour, and the dynamic regional weather is the most dynamic factor.

Most of us know the LA fires are a horrific tragedy that has nothing to do with DEI or "woke" or whatever. Bless the firefighters risking their lives to battle the inferno. We still have heroes in this post modern, nihilistic age.
Firefighters don't care about the politics of the person whose house they are saving. They deserve to be paid in the six digit range, not the idiots on Wall Street.
The stupidity of so many fellow citizens is really disheartening and depressing. Why aren't we rallying around those impacted by this horrible disaster instead of propagating lies and misinformation? We used to come together as a country when disaster struck. How did we get here? More importantly, how do we fix it?? 💔

"These houses burned but this one didnt" is partly how Catherine O'Leary got blamed unfairly. Also, the palisade fire area is surrounded by five golf courses, and the fire department can't get enough water. I WONDER WHY.

I donated to the American Red Cross of California and to World Central Kitchen. The Red Cross shows up in force for people whose homes have burned down. It is a great organization. And World Central Kitchen feeds people and most importantly the firefighters. Both are reputable and the money you give goes to the people you intend to help.
How about ignoring what Trump and his Republicans say about the fires! The rest of us are paying attention. Let’s praise those firemen from Canada and Mexico helping our firemen put out the flames! It’s those high winds and everything dry as a bone because of no rains making things difficult.
The firefighters are having a literal hell of a time battling those elements. Without complaining, as far as I know. They and the first responders are heroes!
When I was young, I drove my bike into a water drainage ditch on the side of the street. A Hispanic came and got me, picked me up and brought me to my grandparents place. Even though I didn't speak her language nor know her name, getting help in that moment was all I could hope for. Thanks!
Trae, I was on a road trip up the coast from CA, OR & WA. I rushed home & on my way I saw at least 10 fire trucks from WA, OR and Northern CA driving to the rescue. If all those states stopped paying Federal Taxes, the Red States are screwed! Blue States, stop paying your Federal Taxes. See how they like us then!
The saddest thing about this is that so many people have actively predicted exactly these types of fires, but when the people making the decisions are presented with this the response is just "nah, we don't want to." Including Trump 4 years ago saying "I don't think the science knows." The science does know and this was way too predictable.
MANY in comments are saying "HOW is it a NATURAL disaster?" Such indifference & ignorance... I said, like 100 mile TORRENTIAL winds in a dry, drought area aren't the recipe for disaster?? And aren't natural??
These people live amongst us. My MAGA neighbor was explaining to me how the lasers are burning everything except blue objects 😅 he always has an empty stare in his eyes , bless his heart
I appreciate you so much Trae. There is so little to laugh about in the world, just this minute. Having you to make it a little bit more tolerable to talk about these issues is truly a help. 🤗
NotJeff here. Trae, I've only found out about you since last year, and I don't recall you ever being this angry. But it's righteous anger. Keep safe, dude, and have faith that the rain will come again.
I was watching Big Trouble in Little China recently and it struck me--it rains through the whole movie. Absolutely pours. That was the 80s, and by the time I attended college there in the late 90s, that was already tapering off.
If it helps, Trae--last weekend, I was driving my elderly mom home from some errands when a teenager going way too fast on an electric scooter collided with a car and got thrown over the hood. My mom, of course, jumped out to help while I called 911 because we've both worked in education and basically have a hardwired Hurt Kid Mode--but three or four drivers behind us stopped, too, and they got out to help as well. Only one car passed the scene without stopping. People applied first aid, directed traffic, called the kid's mom for him, stayed with the driver--everyone just wanted to help, and they did so calmly and effectively. An ambulance arrived within minutes, the kid was transported to a trauma unit, and according to the paramedics, he'll probably be okay eventually, thanks to his helmet. All that was in southern California, ironically, and the air still smelled pretty smoky at the time, even though we were many miles from the evacuation zones. So in answer to your question about whether people would check the politics of a car-crash victim before helping ... apparently not this time. I hope that brightens your day a little.
Thank you for being you !! I couldn’t agree with you more especially when you say there are the good people out there that would stop to help anyone. We have to stick together and you’re helping so much w that !

I'm reminded of the question "What one thing would the world be better off without?" and I'm torn between religions that only serve to divide us and humans as a whole. To be clear I'm not saying all religion is bad, but odds are if there's a shitty person they identify as religious.
Yes, I know and know of religious people who are great human beings, but it seems to me so much religion is based on ideas of punishment and doom, and a kind of mental slavery.

I had a relative post that picture with all the trees. My 1st hint was that it didn't look like anywhere I have ever been in LA County. It was slightly familiar, though. A reverse image search showed the below information. The Kilcrease Circle community in Paradise, California, devastated by the Camp Fire, surrounded by green forest with canopies largely untouched by fire. satellite image from Nov 2018 When there's disasters, protests, crime, or anything else that is politicized, take a minute to verify before reposting. Also, search why trees don't burn when houses do.
Nailed it again, Trae. I hope you & your family stay safe, but I will NOT be praying for you. God is busy assisting half of all sports teams. Love ya, brother.
My favorite is Rand Paul. He is an equal opportunity hypocrite. When blue states need federal disaster aid he is the first to proclaim that the government should not be bailing them out... but when red sates need federal disaster aid, he remains on message and says the government should not be bailing them out... but when Kentucky needed federal disaster aid, Rand was first in line.
I’m so sick of the hate. California helps so many red states too 😤 I’ll NEVER understand. How they have no empathy whatsoever UNLESS it’s them is still mind numbing. Btw a sheriff did say he won’t help anyone who didn’t vote for Trump…
The same argument in Paradise, "why are the giant pines still standing?" Because it was a sweeping flash fire spreading 2 football fields a minute. Most of the pines were scorched but not killed. What was really odd was there wasn't a house standing as far as the eye could see, just scorched trees and chimneys...but there would be one house left untouched. One was my tai chi teacher. His whole neighborhood was burned down. The fire burned off his back porch then stopped. His roof was even littered with pine needles but the fire went around it.

Musk is nothing more than another greedy CEO who got very lucky with his lying, cheating, stealing, worker abuse, and stock inflating, etc. Eelon Musk is no different (other than higher stock prices) from all the other blood-sucking parasite CEOs who are destroying the world in pursuit of profit. He is just another _Brian Thompson._ (United Healthcare CEO)
It sure is for the first time I am ashamed to be an American.
Where the richest country in the world, and were the most ignorant country in the world. You think that capitalism doesn't connect those two strands?
1.) the us was never the richest country in the world. Up there, yeah, but not #1. 2.) the US is not becoming more ignorant and intolerant: the shit stain voted into power has allowed all the intolerance and ignorance to go completely mask off in public. The US has always been like this: it was just socially unacceptable to flaunt it, mostly. Now there's nothing stopping them.
I think you might have meant, "Americans have a richness of embarrassments."
