- Continuing the video series on ballasting I'm going to share with you my recipe for making your own ballast cement and how to apply it to fresh ballast. I'll show you 3 different tools for applying the ballast cement and also go over ways to get the cement to completely penetrate the ballast.

Isopropyl alcohol is not all that readily available in the UK anymore unfortunately, the best (most reliable) place to get it over here is from any airbrush supply store as obviously it's used regularly as a thinner and airbrush cleaner...
I would suggest wet water for ballasting track if you have weathered ties with acrylic paints. The alcohol will lift the paint off the ties and rails.
Wet water works fine but alcohol will evaporate in a fraction of the time. Also because it evaporates so quickly it doesn’t affect the paint on the rails and ties.
@@TheDCCGuy Thanks. I tried 70% IPA but it messed up my folk art acrylic on my ties. Should I go with 50%? Or maybe I was impatient and didn't let the paint dry enough before I ballasted.
Would eye droppers work as well as a pipett? I have lots of those.

What ratio of glue and water do you use? Also, what ratio of soap to water do you use for your wet water?
1 pt glue 3 pt water, 4 drops soap on a 1 paint bottle. I use IPA instead of wet water.

1 part glue to 3 parts water, is that like 1 cup glue to 3 cups water? What is the exact measurements? I’m having a lot of trouble with it.
It can be cups or gallons, it ain’t rocket science and close is good enough.

Would Elmer's school glue work?
School glue is specially formulated to be very water soluble so it can be washed out of kids clothes so I would not recommend it for scenery work at all.

@@TheDCCGuy HI your ideas great & simple to understand. I meant to say similar to episode 31 if you could mention the list of material great help someone like me a beginner.
If there is an extensive parts list for a project I usually do include it in the description. However for something where I show and describe in detail as in this video I see no need to do that. I expect most folks to be able to either remember or write down something like “PVA flue”.
I wish you were right about the availability of 70% isopropyl alcohol . Not anymore !
Interesting that it is no longer available in the UK. It is readily available here in drug and grocery stores. Is it possible it is sold there as rubbing alcohol? Of course right now it may have disappeared in the US since it is commonly used as a disinfectant.
Under No Circumstances should you use Isopropyl alcohol @70% better to use 99%.( 70% +30%water) = rust or severe corrosion.

Thanks, but you could have cut about 5 minutes off video if you would have just stayed on point, didn't need to know where to buy alcohol and some other points, but still informative
You’d be surprised how many questions I get on what might seem like obvious and mundane topics. Consequently I have to try and address the lowest common denominatior.
Chemestry lesson on ballast, glue, water. Yet never tells you the mix ratio of scenic cement. Arggg
You need to pay closer attention especially at 3:14 where I give the mix ratio.
