RIP Bob. That actor has been known as the samurai of 10,000 deaths, in films. Not the samurai who has killed 10,000 people, but the one who has died 10,000 times.
Tom Cruise is great in this, but Ken Watanabe (Katsumoto) is the true star of the movie.
For me it's Hiroyuki Sanada. He finally got to show off his swordsmanship in an A-List movie. He's so quick and clean in his movements.

This movie did something that a lot of movies don’t do when the don’t go full accurate , show respect
undeserved. the samurai were horribly corrupt at this point. the only thing they were fighting for was their right to continue to oppress the people.

A key artistic/cinematic part people miss in this movie is the first scenes...... When Katsamoto is meditating, he see's "a vision" of the white tiger......that is why when he sees Algren for the first time, what he notices is a man fighting with a desperate ferocity (like a tiger) but then see's the flag on the spear (depicting a white tiger) .
Hes a man that is seeing a vision play out in front of him.....which is in part why he saves Algren.

Also Katsumoto looking at the blossoms at the end, "Perfect. They are all perfect."
Such a heartbreaking moment but at least he died the way he wanted, with honour, fighting till the end.

I love this movie a lot, this is the movie that made me fall in love with Ken Watanabe, 10/10 performance. After this one, I had to watch Letters from Iwo Jima and Memoirs Of A Geisha .. such a good actor. Algren : "Every soldier has nightmares" Katsumoto : "Only one who is ashamed of what he has done." .. .... love that part.

Interesting to note: MOAG, supposedly the icon of Japanese beauty was actually played by the incredible GongLi who was 41 at the time. Japanese woman the most overrated of all the Orient, short squat and facially challenged , can't match the Chinese and Koreans. No way, Wo pai !!!

This movie was very popular in Japan. It loosely follows the Satsuma uprising, where the Samurai forces loyal to the emperor who had previoudly fought to overthrow the shogunate and restore imperial power, but the emperor used that power to ban and displace the samurai in the name of modernization and progress. His old allies and friends fought against his forces, the same allies and friends who had restored the throne and authority. There was indeed a lot of nuance and complicated relationships, though this movie is a fictionalized version in terms of the people (though western experts were brought in to modernize all aspects of Japanese life, including the army, that background of the story is legitimate).

I love how they did not use the great white saviour cliché this film for Ahlgren, but it was the natives who did the saving of Ahlgren. And this film has amazing cinematography, epic score but unlike most "historical" films, this manages get so much right for the periodic piece and it does it with respect for the subject and history. I have to love the small details like after General Hasegawa´s seppuku, how Katsumoto bows Hasegawa´s body. People who don´t know custom´s in Japan miss how powerful that scene actually is in terms of respect.

The Nuance that is often missed is when Taka is helping Algren pur on the Armour. The robes wore under the armour were the Samurai burial robes. So the sad head on his shoulder is her preparing him for his burial.
Fun fact: The Japanese man in the movie who spars with Tom Cruise is an honest-to-goodness real-life samurai. That's why this movie gets the small details about samurai correctly.
That is why I get kiddy every time I see Hiroyuki Sanada with blade on screen. I was so dissapointed how short his scene in MCU was but gosh I loved him in the Bullet Train...
He's an absolute badass hot damn!
The samurai were a hereditary social class abolished more than a century ago. He is not a samurai.
What he is is a mixed martial artist. A very competent one, although from a young age his martial arts have been an enabler for his acting rather than something he has pursued in its own right - it's not like he enters tournaments or anything like that.

That would be like me saying I am a French nobleman because I’m descended from French aristocracy: the French don’t have nobles anymore, the aristocracy was abolished, so by definition I am not one.

I'm so glad you watched this movie! Growing up this was one of my favorite movies! One of my best friends growing up in Canada was Chinese and as a Polish Canadian we bonded over this film. We're both nearly 30 and I remember chatting with him about this movie just last year. He was always picked on for "looking different," yet he emerged as one of the strongest people I know. The movie is such an incredible story of passion and resilience in a foreign land!

3:11 Unlike China, Korea and pretty much the rest of the world, Japan has only had one dynasty throughout its history. Their imperial dynasty is so old it ties to mythology and legend with the first emperor Jimo, being the child of a deity.
What always changed in Japan instead was the actual central government, for a large part of Japan's history, the emperor was only figurehead and the real power rested with the most powerful of the feudal lords (Daymios) who ruled Japan as a hereditary military dictator, sometimes called the Shogun and sometimes other ranks.
The historical events that inspired this movie took place shortly after the last Shogunate was overthrown and replaced with a semi-constitutional monarchy.

Samurai were a class of citizen, a very high class of citizen. They were essentially private military to their lords and did their lord's bidding. As Algren says, Samurai means "to serve." Back before the time period of this movie, samurai were usually always financially well off because there was ALWAYS war going around. Japan looked like the United States in centuries past so far as the number of different provinces it had. During this time period, Emperor Meiji wanting to modernize, and that meant importing goods and services and ways of thinking. Many Japanese didn't like this, thinking they'd lose their independence as a country to the West so they rebelled. The Meiji Era, when this movie takes place, was a very tumultuous time for samurai. Their way of life was outlawed, carrying swords was banned. Japan as a whole started to get a modern, nationwide military so there was no need for samurai. Common peasants could become soldiers and many samurai saw this as an insult. For almost 1000 years they were the fighting force, the warrior class. Now ANYONE could serve the emperor? How dare they!
Samurai DID use firearms. The movie REALLY romanticizes the samurai not using guns, but they in fact ALWAYS used guns if they were available. Fun fact, the primary weapon for a samurai was the yumi bow. We see Katsumoto's son using a bow to great effect in the movie,; samurai were LETHAL with bow and arrow. A katana sword was really a secondary weapon should the samurai get into close quarters combat.
There's a really good Netflix documentary about Japan called "Age of Samurai: Battle for Japan". The Japanese had access to firearms in the 1580's which they got from the Portuguese. They had so many firearms that it eventually became illegal for commoners to possess firearms punishable by death. The Japanese ruling class was gravely concerned about heavily armed peasants revolting against them.
23:48 The topknot is a key part of Samurai culture. When Nobutada cries out like that as his topknot is being cut off, I feel like he’s begging his ancestors' forgiveness for allowing himself to be publicly dishonoured like this.
I read that the costumes were so detailed that Cruise's collar alone took 70 hours.
The Samurai costumes would've been so excruciatingly time consuming to make but they looked incredible!! Worth every moment!

Japan's current dynasty started in 660 BC. They developed a parliamentary monarchy during the time portrayed in this film.
The movie takes place in 1876, roughly a decade after the U.S. Civil War concluded and a lot of the fighting with native peoples in the western U.S.
This movie is fiction but is inspired by real events... they added an "american captain" because Hollywood... but that's how we can witness this story, through his eyes, so I think it's ok.
The character Katsumoto is based on a samurai called Saigo, his rebellion was known as the Satsuma Rebellion and the last battle where they all died was the Battle of Shiroyama. This battle was pretty much like in the movie, 500 samurai against the Imperial Army, the difference was 60 to 1. First there was a huge combat, a big massacre, and finally the last charge of the remaining 40 samurai who ended up dying under a rain of bullets. This was the end of the samurai and people start calling Saigo "The Last Samurai".
Really great movie, in my opinion this is the best Tom Cruise film.

One of my late Mrs' favorites. From my mother's side, I'm descended from samurai, and a grand uncle possessed a "hand-me-down" sword (very impressive to view). You may blame Noah Webster as the responsible culprit for the alterations regarding "updated, Americanized" English spelling of words.

Helps to go back and watch a second time since you missed more than a few details. The white tiger banner Cruise was holding during the first battle, was meant to represent the vision Katsumoto had. General Hosegawa did know Katsumoto which is why he refused to fight against him: both were Samurai.
Unlike modern culture where beeing difference became synonymous for danger The Last Samurai teaches us that diffrence can become your strength if you are willing to embrace it rather than fear it.

I always liked the scene where he gets his ass kicked in the village with the bokken. He keeps getting up because Taka is watching. I think because it shows respect to her husband. If he just got hit and stayed down, and her husband lost to that type of man then it would make her husband look bad. He took a beating to make her feel better

Tears of the Sun, the Navy SEAL movie I suggested a while back that was not based on true events, but still has an amazing story and performance from Bruce Willis. I sincerely hope it has made your list.
Southpaw, a boxing movie starring Jake Gyllenhaal that is not derivative of Rocky.

Oh, one last comment... Samurai were the profesional soldiers at petty officer level and above. I can't remember if it was Nobunaga Oda or Tokugawa Ieyasu, but by decree of one of them, you had to be born inside a samurai family to be samurai, they were a social class created by law. No one will become samurai outside the class. The foot soldiers, ashigaru, were commoners, usually countryside workers, and could never become samurai. This ended precisely by the time of the movie, the social class was derogated by law and that was one of the reasons for the rebelion of Satsuma. In japanese, samurai means "the one who serves". Great video!

Samurai weren’t nomadic. They had a feudal society, so each lord had his land that he owned and the farming and industry of it produced his wealth. When they captured Algren and went up into the mountains for the winter, Katsumoto told him “this village belongs to my son.” And when Katsumoto cut off the first general’s head after allowing him to commit sepuku, it would have been seen as a sign of respect not as punishment.

Seppuku was the ritual suicide by disembowelment. It was practiced by samurai and later more by the general population at large by World War II.

Brief description of Samurai: The word Samurai means to serve, and samurai served a single Daimyo or "feudal lord". Their primary role was fighting and though most Daimyo's army would consist of a majority of non-samurai, the Samurai were the best having trained effectively for life in the arts of battle. The samurai also have a code of honor called Bushido.
Bushido includes belief in Loyalty, Honor, Respect, Courage, Honesty, and Righteousness. If a Samurai lost his Daimyo during a fight he would either commit seppuku or become a mercenary. Those in this latter group were referred to as Ronin.
Also Samurai are not nomadic, nor were they ever.
Movie background: Japan had been ruled by an Emperor for centuries but in 1603 Shogun (a samurai military dictator) took over the country but allowed the Emperor to stay on as a figurehead. Shortly afterward Japan was closed off by the outside world until the 1860s when American Admiral Perry sailed into Tokyo Harbor with gunboats and sailed Tokyo until they opened their cities to western trade. Japan has no choice but to capitulate and they decided to modernize as quickly as possible. Many people, including many samurai did not like this idea of modernizing so quickly.
The movie simplifies this into the bad greedy guy Nomura and the good Samurai, but in reality, there were bad guys on both sides who wanted things to change (or not) for entirely selfish reasons, and good guys on both sides who genuinely thought modernizing (or not modernizing) was best for Japan.
This movie is based on the 1877 Satsuma Rebellion.

ok so, i'm a bit late to the party, but i'm here to give you some trivia and answer some questions
8:10 that is called "harakiri" it doesnt happen when a samurai is defeated (as many believe) it happens when a samurai fails to do the emperor's comand, that being, if the emperor tells you to defeat an army, you can loose a few battles, as long as that eventuly you do defeat that army, however, if it comes to a point where you cannot do so, than you must do harakiri, this man in this specific scene, he does it because, it is obvious that, since his own army is all dead, he cannot defeat katsumoto, and therefore, he failed to do the emperor's will (even tough it realy wasnt the emperor's will but... well, he believed it was)
in harakiri, the person who is going to kill themselves, must cut their belly, becaus ein japanese ancient culture, it was belive that the spirit rested in there, so you cut your belly so your spirit may safely come out of your boddy, than, after doing so, someone will cut off your head in order to spare you from the pain of a slow death, this is also why, after a battle, samurai would go walking around the field and stucking a sword in the belly of every man in the ground, so that their spirits could safely come out of their boddies.
19:40: indeed, usuly these plays were only played by men, but you know something even funnier? (naruto fans are gonna love this one) the name of these characters from this specific play are tsunade (the beautiful woman) and gyraya (the old man) this is a japanese comedy play, about this old man who keeps trying to touch the boddy of tsunade, the beautiful myden, and always get hurt in the process of trying to do so, as i mentioned, in naruto, 2 main characters were named about these 2 characters of the play, and they have the same relationship as the characters in the play itself.
20:40: similar to karate, ninjutsu is adapted from chinese martial arts, karate was based on kung-fu, and ninjutsu was based on the martial art that the chinese emperor's assassins used, the chinese emperor had his own special assassins, who would do stealth missions, and it is from their knoledge that ninjas in japan came from, that is why in mortal kombat, the lin kuey and the shiray riu are enemies, the lin kuei are chinese ninjas, and the shiray riu are japanese ninjas.
also, ninjas ARE SAMURAI, you see, this movie is losely based on true facts, but like, one thing that most people kinda dont notice is that, there isnt such a thing as "the last samurai" samurai lso trained to be ninjas, and some samurai would specialize in ninjutsu, as other samurai would specialize in kenjutsu (kenjusto being the regular "way of the sword") but every samurai would in their lifetime learn a bit of every martial art in japan, like karate, aikido and judo for example.
also, if you notice, many of the men on the side of the emperor, like the general who killed himself are samurai, the men who go after algreen, trying to kill him, specialy the man that algren cut the head off, those are all samurai, is just that, diferently from katsumoto, they abandoned the title of samurai, as katsumoto decided to keep it.
today, in real life, there are still samurai families, ever heard of "toyota" or "mitsubishi" ? those are ALL samurai families, many big companies in japan were founded by people from samurai families, so their families live to this day (not to mention, i'm sure algren would keep the tradition of the samurai on katsumoto village, and his adopted children and the other children at the village would also become samurai eventuly) so dont worry, the samurai never stoped "existing" their families live to this day, and their teatchings are still taught trough kendo
9You were asking about the ninjas attacking the Samurai rare excv:eptions that they would use katana when something would happen to their blade and today would have to resort to picking up katana off the battlefield that belonged to someone who already died. There were a ton of other reasons why this wouldn't have been a possible engagement in a real-life scenario, but I've already typed enough.

Algren NOT bowing to Katsumoto when they arrive in Tokyo was strategic, they saw Omura watching them from a balcony. They didn't want to look like friends.

Ujio is the toughest SOB you will ever meet. This movie introduced me to his actor Hiroyuki Sanada. The man is an amazing actor as well as an actual master swordsman.

Harakiri is a samurai honor. It has a different meaning than European executions. This act is an act of respect. It was a shame to live in spite of losing.
In Ancient Japanese Culture there is no diffrence between a wooden training sword and a real one both are considered weapons.
This is a nice movie but very different from what actually happened.
For starters, Captain Nathan Algren didn't exist. From what I know Japan's military was armed and trained by the British who were their allies against Russia. The closest character to him is the French officer Jules Brunet who was sent by the French government who took the side of the Shogun during the Boshin war (the war between the emperor and the military dictatorship of Japan, the Tokugawa shogunate) but he refused to leave and remained with the rebels to form the short-lived Republic of Ezo in the northern island of Japan, Hokkaido.
After the fall of Ezo, he returned to France. This was all before the Satsuma rebellion that is kinda depicted here.
Also, the Samurai had no problem with firearms, they've been using them for 300 years by the time of this film and were the fastest to adapt to modern weapons among Asian nations when they were introduced to them in 1500s.
The historical counterpart to Katsumoto, Saigō Takamori, had no problem with using guns either. He only resorted to using old weaponry when he was surrounded and ran out of ammunition in the battle of Shiroyama.
He was also a reformist himself. There are many paintings of him with modern clothing alongside the emperor. He was also in support of the new Japanese military. However, when the conscript military started to fully replace the Samurai, he rebelled as he and his supporters wanted to keep their class privileges in the rural areas which up to that point, were the only people allowed to have weapons in the Japanese society
Also unlike here, the imperial army was fully trained and tested by the time of the Satsuma Rebellion. Saigo actually lost all his battles.
