      Great job, Niky. I'd love to do a makeover for my stairs too but I'm not sure what to do to the hardwood flooring on the landing and the hallway cos they are the same colour as the stairs. I feel changing the colour of the stairs while the landing & hallway floor remain the oak colour might look tacky. Plus I like the floor and don't want to mess it up. Any suggestions please?

    • @DIYbyNikyFoster

      Thanks! I would change the landing as well to the same color. If my stairs werent carpeted, I would paint the risers white and the landings black. ❤️❤️

    Love how thorough you are! Just a thought: those sanding blocks are fairly expensive and wear out super fast. As an alternative, get sandpaper you can buy in bulk. Use a piece of wood as a block and cut to size and wrap it around.

    I know this video is a couple years old but since you seem to still be active wanted to let you know that you've gained another subscriber! My spindles are already painted white so only need a fresh coat. But all of the doors in my home and the railing are oak and have this orangey stain. I didn't want to paint over the beautiful wood so I will be using this technique for them all. Thank you for sharing! I do have a quick question if you remember. How many quarts of stain did you end up needing?

    • @DIYbyNikyFoster
      @DIYbyNikyFoster  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thank you!! I only used 1 quart for the whole entire project and had like half leftover! Also, I’ve seen a few people mention the stain not drying fast so just make sure you build in extra drying time! I live on the East Coast and opened my windows to help dry!

    I do definitely recommend doing those extra top coats when you get the chance. I recently built some doors for one of our rooms (two living rooms connected to each other). I only did two coats on the front of the doors, assuming I could get to them in a few months. Basic wear and tear has already left a noticeable "bald spot" on part of one door, and I now wish I had just done all of the top coats at once.
    The railings look great and totally make the space feel newer!

    Hello Queen
    Not sure if you still doing videos or even seeing the comments
    But I was and am inspired by your videos. So I watched this video that just knew I could do it. I moved into a 30 year old house and it needed some updates. So I went and got my paint, I did one coat as well which means it was a little thick but I liked it so I stayed with it, I let it dry. I was think it would dry like a paint but it was sticky so I was like ohhh let me apply the top coat. It has been a lot of work because when you miss so areas you get black stain on your hands or clothes. This was my very very first diy and I learned a lot. I wish you would have shared that part about the sticky part. However keep doing and keep sharing the videos. Thanks.

    Great video. I think you should have clear coated the stain before painting. Sometimes a little of the gel stain will peel off if not cured for a few days at least and trust me I’ve used gallons of almost every color of gel stain GF makes and sometimes I mix them together to get custom colors. Also if you get some paint seepage on the stain and it has clear on it the paint is real easy to come off and you can get your lines a little crisper but again great video.

    Question about this. Did the gel stain really dry overnight? We followed this video to a T but used a different gel stain. Ours was still wet 48hrs later and we even used a heat gun to try and speed up the process. We just went back and started wiping it off. Any insight here?

    • @DIYbyNikyFoster
      @DIYbyNikyFoster  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi! Yes my gel stain dried overnight. In certain SMALL areas it was not 100% dry, but I left the windows open to assist with drying time. A few other people living in hotter areas like Arizona needed extra drying time. I also did this when it was cold outside, like during the fall so it helped with drying as well.
      I also read online that you have to sand it well or the stain will have trouble. OR if the gel stain is old, it won’t dry properly.

    You should put plastic down when you're sanding and staining.

    I used the exact stain/color and received a very glossy finish. I wish I didn't have to apply the topcoat, as it will make it even glossier.

    Hi. Loooove your house. We have the same one almost so I'm guessing the same builder. Question, how do you get large furniture up the stairs? I save my RH furniature from my old house but cant get it up the stairs. Any tricks. I lo e with you did to the smallest room and bathrooms as well. Thank you.

    • @DIYbyNikyFoster
      @DIYbyNikyFoster  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Whewww, the large vintage furniture fit upstairs easily. The dining table was brought in and assembled via white glove service, so it can come apart. The hardest part was our living room sofas, but the guys were able to twist and turn to get them up the steps! RH has really oversized furniture but you may have to figure out how to twist/turn to maneuver up the steps! Our old bed had to be tossed because it couldn’t fit. We ended up buying a box spring that could be assembled and the mattress is one of the memory foam ones that inflates once it decompressed for 48 hours. Sorry tons of info but I hope this helps! ❤️❤️

      @@DIYbyNikyFoster I am kind of obsessed with the gel stains. I also wanna stain all my cabinets. My main concern is if there's a smell. I'm going with General Finishes Java. I tried contact paper on the cabinets lol... and although it looks great, I'd rather something permanent.

    Hi Nicky, I loved your video so much I used your exact process for my bannister this weekend. One question…the stain is still sticky and it has been two days since I applied my first coat. I love the look but am wondering when I should start second coat and the the top coat. Was your bannister sticky at all when you applied your second coat and top coat?

    • @DIYbyNikyFoster
      @DIYbyNikyFoster  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      If that happens, it may not be fully dry. Try opening up some windows to help dry it. Sometimes when you use thicker layers, it does take a bit longer to dry. That happened to me as well.

    • @shauniepeterson
      @shauniepeterson 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Laura! I’m in the same boat. Mine is still sticky as well. Any update? What did you do to help it?

    • @DIYbyNikyFoster
      @DIYbyNikyFoster  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It may not be fully dry. Or the areas that it was applied to was not fully sanded. There were only a few patches I had like that, but most of the areas dried “hard” once i opened up the windows to air it out. It’s been a bit warmer on the East Coast these past few days, so temperatures may play a role as well!

    • @shauniepeterson
      @shauniepeterson 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@DIYbyNikyFoster thanks for your reply! I’m in AZ so that’s why I’ve been so puzzled. The whole surface is still tacky so maybe it just needs a little more time. I just turned on a fan as well so here’s to hoping!

    • @DIYbyNikyFoster
      @DIYbyNikyFoster  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh yeah! I definitely think its because of the temperatures! Try running a few fans if possible! Also check out General Finishes website too. They may have a few additional tricks for the warmer/humid locations! Best of luck!!! ❤️❤️❤️

    OMG so glad to have watched this video. This also one of the projects that I been wanting to tackle but because the trimming and windows is also honey oak I have held back. My house was built in 2004 and I think back then all that oak was what it was. I am so over the light work on trims and windows. I just want to make sure I don't have any regrets; however, you are inspiring to not be afraid and go for it. Lastly, major project will be my kitchen cabinets unless I just add black hardware for a pop and voila!😁Can't wait to go back and look over more of your videos.

    When you encounter globs and they dry on you, just take a 220 grit sanding sponge or paper and do a light sand. You can go over it with a light touch of the stain and come out just fine. Great job on your project.
