Smaller bands have it worse off because each person stands out far more if they make a mistake, the sheer fact that they can maintain such clarity in their music while playing with such a small band takes a lot more courage and trust in yourself than in bigger bands, I respect this band greatly.

This is how your legacy bands get started, a small group of dedicated students and instructors building a program. Being a brass instructor I can truthfully say that I’ve seen BOA competitive bands start at this level and slowly climb in there respective regions and sometimes even on a national scale. 400 member bands don’t pop out of no where folks.

But they do disappear out of nowhere. My band had 260 people my freshman year. 200 sophomore year, our director left so 140 junior year, and my senior year (we didnt have a show, covid) we were expecting 90 people. This year, my first year out, there are about 70-80. Dedication, good directors, and upper class-man are what create just strong bands. Remove 1-2 of those, your band is done for.

Coming from someone else in a small band, I’m impressed on how clean they are. It’s a lot easier to hear mistakes when the band is smaller. Another thing to note is that the drill and music accommodated their size. It wasn’t watered down and basic, but it emphasized the good qualities they had. And yet, for all of this (save the pipes) they are quieter than this 24 student band. Most of the sections hid behind individuals who take the lead. Only until recently has the sound improved so that you can hear more than 2-3 people playing in each section. Bagpipes dont exactly have a tone switcher but we all make sure that when we play, you notice it.
The title for a video of my band at the beginning of our marching would be Big Band, Small Sound. I'm going to make an effort to show this to my Band Director in hopes that he see it and address it to the band. Truly an awesome performance

@@bigguccichase2486 Lil Chas3 lol if you look up Dexter Dreadnaughts marching band camp 2019 you can see our (just learned don't judge too hard lol) pregame and halftime show for this year and all of our overbearing trumpets 😂 (also the announcer said 192, but there were a few people who didn't go so the band is probably more like 194 or 195)

Proof that hard work, good direction, and lots of practice makes a marching band great no matter how small.

Maddy_ Luv my schools flute section Is like 57 people I think lol and our trumpets which I think we have like 50 and I feel like their trumpets can out play ours. And we have 22 tubas and that tuba player has some power for just one.

At least that front ensemble doesn’t have to worry about hauling 40 million pieces of equipment that each weigh 200 lbs down to the field like my band does 💀

this is amazing!! i remember going to comps with bands this size and sometimes they ended up being better than my band (my band wasn’t very big either, about 40 wind players I’d say)

My daughter’s mother took her out of the state to NJ. She was leaving her old friends from K through 8th grade. This meant that she’d be starting high school without any friends. She joined the Marching Band and attended the band summer camp. Now after 7 days she started school with 105 band members with several becoming BFF’s. She is now a freshman in college and still tight with several of her band mates. Thank God for the Marching Bands around the country.
