My country is a complete paradise with its nature, deep-rooted history, food, culture. But this paradise is inhabited by foreigners, not us.
why are you complaining like a brat? There are always recessions in every nation. The current government, which most young Turks hate, is the one that brought Turkey out of a state of poverty. There were hardships faced by those pioneers who created that state, they went through hardships, they forebear the difficulty. Hardship strikes you and you talk profanity about your country. Great video Uptin ! I lived in Istanbul from 2006 to 2011 teaching business English, and at the time the exchange rate was roughly 2.50 -3.00TL to 1.00 GBP. Even then it was a struggle for most (educated or not), so I cannot imagine what it is like now for those folk in the same occupations. Hell I suppose. Now the rate is 17.50 TL to 1.00 GBP. There are many reasons for the problems in Turkey, but back around 2007 the government changed/introduced mortgage laws which meant a huge amount of "cheap" credit flooded the market along with a massive construction boom. I pointed out at the time to some of my students that this would probably have the consequential effect of turning it into a "rentier" system (like the UK) ; meaning that with Turkey losing much its primary and secondary economy to globalist forces, it would then leave it exposed to something like this happening. It is heart breaking to see this in a place that has left such an indelible mark upon who I am. Turkiye cok seviyorum.
As a Turk who lives in the States, that’s really depressing to watch this, and can’t believe how things went downhill in just 2 years but to me not that really surprising when you know that your economy is built on the brittle construction sector.

I was the first economist who predicted the Turkish currency crisis ten years ago.. The real reason for the crisis is not the interest rate or political problems but structural problems within the Turkish economy. Economic growth based on borrowing from abroad and accumulating hundreds of billions of dollars in external debt.. Plus selling of public companies to foreign investors.. While the economy wasn't able to generate income from abroad to compensate for this.. The result was huge trade defecit and account defecit.. I'm other words, Turkish people were consuming more than what they produce. The foreign currencies coming to the country were less that the foreign currencies leaving the country. Thus put pressure on the Turkish lira and caused it to collapse.

You are right. I live in turkey. What is said in this video is very, very little. People are in really bad shape. I saw on the internet that a man can't even make french fries for his kid. On the way to a job interview, he lies to people and takes the bread on the ground, brings it home and eats it. Some news channels support the government as if there is no problem in the country. Not only is the economy bad in Turkey. For example, a woman cannot walk on the street by herself. If he does, he gets abused. If the criminal wears a suit, he is not found guilty. There is no such thing as justice. It is the same in education, the system is artificial and students cannot even buy books. As a citizen of a neighbouring country, I try to rejoice the failing Turkish state - several years ago, Turkey was a militant, aggressive and arrogant country that constantly meddles in our internal affairs and is getting on everyone's nerves with their Ottoman revival lunacy. However, seeing that regular people are getting crushed, ruins my celebration. In fact, I have a Turkish pensionary living near me who has been here for a long time and receives his Turkish pension in lira. I spoke with him several days ago about the current developments and he siad that his pension is now a third of what it used to be, converted in EUR - which is what he spends here and that's not the end of it. As much as I am prejudiced against Turkey, such stories are unfortunate.
Why and how could you be that much racist? Are we the people who did this to you? Germany invaded every single country in europe and others also did the same and now they are united as EU and germany is the capital of EU. Because it was their ancestors who did this in the history. I am sure you are greek or armenian. I have never had hatred against both civilization because you are not the ones our ancestors fought. Today's world is different. If you rejoice suffering of people of a country, you're not an human being and you are just someone who forgets that there are children and innocent people. As Turkish people we also hate the current government.
@@ConstellationOrion First off, you are making a fool of yourself by turning my statement into a racial thing. Calling someone a racist nowadays means exactly nothing and besides, modern day Turks are white and have very little to do with their Far East origins. And even if they did, I have nothing against the Chinese, Japanese, Koreans, etc. and in fact enjoy very much the output of their economies. Needless to say that in the clip itself, the blue eyed girl doesn't look very Mongol to me. I have absolutely no qualms about say Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan (I am not Armenian) and I very much respect Uzbekistan. So much for the racial card. Second off, Turkey is a very unfriendly neighbor and is looking for many ways to undermine our sovereignty by any means and especially through our Muslim minorities, most of which are not even Turks - just like Bosnia. It doesn't start or end with Erdogan. That Davutoglu idiot and his "Strategic Depth" doctrine is another major reason for me hailing the downfall of Turkey. While Turkey was on the rise, we had to deal with all sorts of Turkish nationalism and hostility even among our own minorities who even went so far as to conduct economic ethnic cleansing by buying us out of certain regions with the generous aid and money infusions from Turkey, which by way of their constant medding in our internal affairs had managed to secure large concessions and created a state within the state. Now that Turkey is down the drain, suddenly the until recently vocal and militant minorities have become docile and their Turkish nationalism has been covered deep lacking the former backing by Turkey. Even more so, a new generation of Turks that have lost all ties with my country are now rushing in to buy real estate and get a hold of our passports, while not even speaking the language, let alone have good feelings about the country they want to become citizens of. I am strongly against that not because I am racist as you foolishly called me, but because if the trend reverses in the future and Turkey is stabilized, there will be an even larger fifth column that will eagerly forget how shoddy they were till recently and will reinvigorate the same old Ottoman idiocy. That's it - Turkey is just a bully and when left unattended will make life difficult for everyone around. When it gets its ass kicked and leaves us alone, I cannot be very compassionate.
@@ConstellationOrion As for the Germans, they particularly never invaded us, unlike those Ottoman freaks. I used to live in turkey about 4 years ago until my parents decided to move. I didn’t know what was happening at the time with the economy. Now, I know a lot more. TL (Turkish lira) is losing worth very significantly, prices are going so much higher and people are struggling to afford basic necessities like food. For example, 4 years ago, you could go to a local bakery and buy a freshly baked bread for 1 lira. Now, just this summer, it costs 5 liras. Bought from the same bakery (I visited my grandma and they sent me to buy some bread that’s how I realised) all of this is the government’s and specifically Erdogan’s fault. I don’t think it’s going to get any better from this point. Turkey is going to the bottom of of the hill and going back up is near impossible. My best wishes to anyone who is struggling
Awesome video man I'm Turkish but I live in London about all my life, and I've been watching Turkey's finance closely and its heading in a very bad direction
Same here mate with me, I've lived in London thorughout my life, however just recently about 2 years ago moved to York for Uni. I've been watching Turkey currency closely, and its terrible for people there. They simply cannot afgprd basic needs, it was better than this, even after the financial crisis. Its crazy to think about the value of the currency halfing in couple of months, just show if you have a government thar can't functionly. This will happen, but obviosuly before the election the government of Erdogan will try very hard to improve the economy, so theres still hope. Turkey's fate depends on the citizens to see and vote a government which will be for a change, improve stuff in general. However, I do hate these old men and women in Turkey by comparing how generation Z got it easier etc. You need to compare yourself to the contepmorary world, not of that 40 odd years ago. Thats why I have very high hope once generation z takes over, and these old people are gone. Hopefully in my lifetime.
Turkey is just paying the cost of freedom from the Western monetary imperialism .... Erdogan is a true leader and his politic will pay back in long term incha Allah
Sending love and support from Bosnia to all Turkish people. (Hyper)inflation is just beginning, and it will affect whole world, with dollar being last "man" standing, but it too will be crashed very soon. Young people just need to adapt and survive challenging period ahead. Try to produce value with resources which are at your disposal locally/regionally.
I think the duration of minimum wage to buy the items in Turkey happens similarly in Malaysia too. On top of Beirut's severe financial crisis, these three countries must share something in common but I can't point it out. 🤔
Inflation is good actually if at normal standart. Because if inflation 0 than its mean less job open. Job open more lower because people power purchasing decrease so there is lower incentive a firm to produce more output. Lower output = lower worker need
Reasonable inflation is a good thing since it motivates people to spend which creates a circulation of money in the market. Turkey has too much inflation which makes the value of the money decrease faster than you can spend.
Nah it's not. Just look at the inflation here in my country Pakistan. Sure it's not as worse as places like South Africa or Lebanon but if things don't get better, we might go to that level (which I hope doesn't happens and I wish those countries and Turkey best of luck).
the currency will get worse and worse, I am a student in the US from Turkey, and it’s surreal seeing all of this unfold in front of my eyes. When I first got here the ratio of TL to USD was 3.3 now its at 13. When I receive money from Turkey it literally changes value every second and most likely dropping. Hoping for the best of us🙏🏼 but unfortunately the future doesn’t look too bright right now 😔
This doesn’t sound like the story of other country. Living in Korea and seeing what the government is doing, it sounds exactly the same as what Turkish Government did. This is haunting me on serious level.
Same in Pakistan mate! Prices are way higher than they have ever been! We the young graduates can't find properly paying jobs. (almost every other company except IT offers below minimum wage per month)
Also same in Malaysia, it looks modern, clean, a neat country with the second-highest building in the world but people are poor and life is hard, some people eat food from trash but the government always cover up to show the world everything is working fine.
I am from India and most average middle class have to work more or less the same amount of hours to buy the products you showed. I understand the context of currency crisis in Turkey. In my state of Kerala minimum wage for a worker is 800rs to 1000rs( most of the other states have it worse). Most peoples average monthly wages is from 15k to 30k monthly, unless you work for the government. Every foreign brand or goods are taxed insanely here in India from starbucks to a car. More or less affording all this is a luxury in India.
U are wrong india do have pretty expensive stuff but it too has very cheap stuff . Food and clothing is very cheap in india . specially free rice beans etc for poor or lower middle class. Ya if u talk about star bucks or car etc it is expensive but main thing is food local food is cheap so mostly people can afford basic needs
@@Anmolnegi-yw7hg If you read my comment, I was talking about the very same products he showed in that video. I'm sure Turkey would have local goods like we do. Our financial management right from demonisation has been absolutely crazy.
@@sabugeet true as I mentioned those things are expensive but I was taking about basic needs . Luxury should be earned by people themselves. Even india is poor and ministers are corrupt but only thing I like is cheap food and basic facilities for poor which is not in many countries.
I am not that sure about it but I think india is one of the cheaper countries to live in. So compared to turky the situation is not that bad. I am not saying we are in a good situation. Just that they are worse off.
If you are in 15-30k monthly income bracket, only a fool in India would go inside a western AC mall or try Mcdonalds Starbucks KFC, imported cereal, cheese, western items. India is the cheapest country in the world in terms of food and basic living items. My full time driver and domestic helper both earn 20k & 17K a month. They save 80% -90% of their income as I pay for their housing, food etc. I even pay for driver kid’s private school tuition. I just want them to save the most possible. And I make sure they control the urge to spend it on non essential stupidity.

I am living in Turkey for 20 years. The problem with Turkey is simple. The old generation which they have strong bond with religion are raising a child like them. They are instill their idea to children and those children votes. This keeps like that and most of the time you cant do anything about that because they think they know the best and they cant be wrong because you cant question your religion and you cant question your choices and even though you know something is not right you cant change your course of action because you are already with them. You cant betray your family, you cant change yourself. You have been like this like your whole life and this circle keeps going like that. This country is dead. The government practices religion and they win the votes of the religious people. If your religious beliefs are different, you cannot live here. There is no religious freedom and no education. Erdogan would be a best prime minister is Pakistan but not in Turkey. Because Turkish people they want to live by peace and prosperity, they don’t dream about the sick Ottoman Empire.
Let's recap some of the European great cities - Athens was founded by Greeks and is still governed by Greeks. Berlin has always been German, Paris has been French forever, Rome has been roman, Moscow has been Russian and in this esteemed company we have the Turks who forced theselves into Constantinople, repurposed the cathedral into a Mosque and called it a day.

Helps a lot in exports..see china manipulation of their currency
Reasonable inflation is a good thing since it motivates people to spend which creates a circulation of money in the market. Turkey has too much inflation which makes the value of the money decrease faster than you can spend.
Nah it's not. Just look at the inflation here in my country Pakistan. Sure it's not as worse as places like South Africa or Lebanon but if things don't get better, we might go to that level (which I hope doesn't happens and I wish those countries and Turkey best of luck).
if you guys didnt have a dictator in power maybe it would have been better muahahahahha
Great video, Uptin! I feel bad for the situation that is happening in Turkey. Btw, the video would be even better if you speak in normal speed.
normal speed? haha
Really well made, impressive.
Thanks sm Joanne!!
the currency will get worse and worse, I am a student in the US from Turkey, and it’s surreal seeing all of this unfold in front of my eyes. When I first got here the ratio of TL to USD was 3.3 now its at 13. When I receive money from Turkey it literally changes value every second and most likely dropping. Hoping for the best of us🙏🏼 but unfortunately the future doesn’t look too bright right now 😔
Sound like a broken record with all these countries. Cuba, Lebanon, Venezuela, and now Turkey
Argentina as well, inflation is just creating new enemies against NATO.
Amazing, your content is getting solid !! ✨
Thanks Ali!
now bigmac is more than 100TL..
(almost every other company except IT offers below minimum wage per month)
hello man. im sorry you can relate to us.
@@Anmolnegi-yw7hg
If you read my comment, I was talking about the very same products he showed in that video.
I'm sure Turkey would have local goods like we do.
It's just that I feel most of the goods produced by foreign companies are a luxury to majority of Indians.
Even India is facing a high inflation now. Luckily our currency hasn't gone haywire.
It is a really sad thing for us because we planned to stay in Turkey for a long time. But unfortunately after 5 years of trying to survive here with this currency rate we have decided to move on
I will definitely miss this country and I really hope the best for this country and I hope their currency can become strong again
9:09 "are you worried the currency will get even worse?" (1$ = 9.9 Lira)
She: "No, I guess it will be okay"
Dollar : "hold my 13,37 Lira"
One man's ambitions destroying a nation.
Erdogan wants Turkey to be the leader of islamic world. really laugable. 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Why they don't Protest against the fool Erdogan?
@MaSTeR Tech Stay strong... Try to throw him out of power in next elections.
Very depressing altough too familiar to me as well, I'm hungarian the outlook of the youth is also really bad for a big amount of people that don't get mentioned in any media
Hungary? Really?!, Dont you have like one third of germany's per capita? Thats not bad
@@nodrize77 maybe on paper, the avarage salary of a regular person is around 320--500 in usd in net, we have a 27% VAT on everything taxes are the highest in europe, and the salaries of gov sector employees massivly inflates the avarage on statistical maps.
There is no middle class it's either you are rich or poor. 2/3 of the population is the latter. I would define it in a way that you are around or slightly above the survivor tier in mazlow's pyramid.
When a mad man thinks his economic policy is directly delivered from Allah to him. I'm sorry turkish people.
oh he knows where the money comes from. But a lot of the money people are leaving now, Except Putin, he loves Erdogan,
I am so glad I live in America and we have an independent fed. Just watching turkeys runaway inflation has been a real eye-opener for me.
Currently 1 lira = 16.52 dollars which makes the inflation over %100 for this year.
Turkey is going to become Pakistan soon
