Thought I knew how to do it but just needed a bit of confirmation and reassurance. Out of all the DIY videos on the topic you're the only one I saw using a file and not a dremel or angle grinder.. THANK YOU!!

First of all, legendary name. I love it. I hadn’t done this in over 30 years and thought I remembered how to do it; thanks for confirming. I looked at a few videos before this, but they all used unnecessary power tools.

Your voice is so pleasant. I would listen to your tutorial on making toast, or anything else. Thank you for this video. Most DIY tasks are manageable; just need to the know how part.

Wow, you explain so nicely and understandably and show us clearly what to do. I feel like even I could do this (and until I entered my 30’s, I never thought I would’ve even dared holding a hedge cutter).
Do you have any tips on what to do if there’s a small/thin metal curl on one of the blades (one that makes the machine unable to cut until fixed)?

A little oil into those central oval apertures smooth out the blades actions too.

You didn't show us or explain how to reach each different blade which they can be complicated to get to

I'm skeptical, because sharpening in general requires being able to get to BOTH sides of the edge you're working. If you sharpen only one side of a knife, chisel, shear, etc, you raise a tiny burr which then needs to be honed off of the other side by some means (in the case of the chisel, you'd want to lay it FLAT on the stone, press hard, and stroke against the edge - and it only takes a stroke or two to get rid of that burr, which reveals the 'real' edge). But in the case of any hedge-trimmer, doing this is nigh on impossible, because the blades are very difficult to separate - so you can't 'lay them flat' on a stone (etc) to take the burr off. For that reason, I think many people use a cylindrical (rotary) diamond-stone or similar. I think that's a compromise in terms of sharpening, but working *across* the edge, you can't raise a burr.
Could be that the burrs are removed when the blades begin running, but removing them by scraping metal-on-metal just doesn't appeal to me...

If you disassemble the blade it would be easy to remove the burrs

Thanks for the how-to! Do you use multipurpose oil or a specific type?

I think I had some lightweight oil in a can. I don't use any specific brand. But I bet some of the other viewers have some suggestions in that regard. Best, Chris

Can I use WD40 instead of oil?

Common flat file won't cut the metal on ryoby hedge trimmers
