We all know that when the Bolsheviks took power in Russia in 1917, they banned all religions, they destroyed churches, killed priests, even demolished the big cathedral near the Moscow River, the Church of Christ the Savior, which was constructed in1839 for 40 yrs, in commemoration of their victory over Napoleon, they destroyed it, they demolished it, they carted away the rubble, leaving a big hole like a swimming pool. Come 1990 , glasnost, perestroika, Gorbachev, back to capitalist democracy , opening to the west, droves of tourist, at the big hole stand a magnificent cathedral, I asked the Russ, .." What happened to religion here?".. His answer: During the Stalinist yrs, religion was banned we were even prohibited fr thinking about god, they had a thought police but, (putting his hand on his breast), we kept our faith in our heart, Stalin could not see it or destroy it . Yes, actually the Russkies are a religious people, I have seen big hulking Russian men and babuskas with solemn faces inside the church. When liberalization came, the Russian govt which destroyed the cathedral ln 1917,ordered that it be reconstructed to its original design and grandeur , what took 40 yrs to build was rebuilt in only two years, Is the govt sponsoring state religion? I asked. No, it is not because of religion, it was constructed to celebrate our victory over Napoleon, religion or no religion it is our legacy and we are immensely proud of it. Inside the Kremlin stand a row of French cannons left behind in their retreat.
