Firewire Tomo EVO Surfboard Review

  • Justin takes a look at the uniquely designed Evo by Daniel "Tomo" Thomson. The Tomo Evo (Evolution) has taken the much loved Vanguard/Vader and rounded it off and created a far curvier outline, whilst creating a wider central wide point, making it even more favourable in smaller weaker waves.
Don't worry though, this board will still fly in overhead conditions!

Not sure I I made the right move. I'm 6'2 225lbs and ordered the 6'0". Its been a long while since I surfed, but before that I surfed SoCal and Northern Baja for about 25yrs and was intermediate/adv in skills at the time. Just getting back to surfing, but the lakes here in Michgan and figured since I always rode a 6'6"-6'8" that the 6'0" Evo Helium was the way to go. After reading these comments it sounds like a 5'10" may have been a better choice, but by volume, that is what the website suggested.

Hey crew, good info on the video and all the comments.....how's the tomo evo go in smaller but steep waves up to head high. I've got a local breach break. Sometimes get fat waves (not that often), but mostly get steep fast breaking waves. Looking for a daily driver type surfboard for waves from waist to head...can the Evo handle that or is it really just for mushy days....our local needs a fast a board as possible as the wave breaks so quick

Hey there! Great videos! Any recommendations for a quad fin set in the futures? I m 77kilos and just got a new tomo evo in 5"10. I m a average surfer on a short board and I feel like I need more control in the bottom turn. What do you think about the rasta quad set? Cheers

5'10" sounds like way over the volume for EVO at your weight, It's a board you don't want to oversize.. or it simply won't work. As a reference.. I surf 5'4" EVO HE and I'm 71kg 187cm - average intermediate
Depends of your skill.. but you should be on either 5'4" or 5'6"
As fins I surf mine as quad with FCS2 Performer Medium (neo glass) + 2 trailer fins

What size would you recommend for an intermediate surfer at 6'5 (195cm) and 195lbs (88kg)?

spiffjiff05 I am 6’3” / 215 lbs and I ride a 5’11” @ 41 L and I LOVE IT... I could go down a bit a litter or 2, but I just surf 3 or 4 times a year on surf trips. If you’re in good shape, 5’10” or 5’9” should be good. The Helium technology works amazing with this board. Or at least it has worked for me... I took my other board to my last trip and it didn’t make it out of the travel bag, the EVO did it for me, the whole trip! specially surfing on my backside, I could totally put a boat load of pressure on that tail and it just turned amazingly well.
Tried it as a quad and didn’t like it, but I loved it as a thruster with XL perfomer fins (I’m a big guy).
I can only imagine if I was in better shape and was able to surf a smaller board....but for now, the 41L was insane good

@@estebaneordogh4564 Thank you for the reply! How does the evo paddle and duckdive? I usually ride a typical shortboard that's around the same height as myself, so the idea of riding a board 6 inches shorter than myself is a little daunting. Typically, I'm not into short and wide boards... but the reviews on the EVO are all extremely positive and I heard that LFT had some issues in durability, but the helium construction has alleviated that. Biggest worry is trying to fit a 6'5 frame on a 5'11 or smaller board.

spiffjiff05 I’d say focus on the volume rather than the size... the bulk of the foam is under the chest, and it has a domed deck to “hide” the foam.
It does take a minute to figure out where to place your chest when paddling, but once you get it you’ll be fine. The nose is super thin, so no swing weight of a conventional board, and because of that I’ve made a few drops that I doubt I would have made with a conventional board. No problem duck diving, I’m 6’3”, so I’m not much shorter than you are.
It just works.... I’m a fan. Just wish I was in better shape than I am so I could surf a 5’9” or even a 5’8”. And zero (YES, I SAID zero) compression dents on mine, heck, couple of minor dings (one because of the stupid airline, and one duck diving in a shallow reef) before even having compression dents on the deck.

Oh, and it paddles like a dream.... again, mostly because all the foam is under your chest.

@@estebaneordogh4564 Nice, appreciate the info. Volume wise looks like 5'9 would be the ticket as that's around the same volume I'm currently riding. Stocking the demo days as I live in California, hoping to give it a shot before i drop that much $$$.

Could you please compare the seaside to the evo? I'm a interdmediate,
5'7" 150 lbs, surfing mostly east coast US waves. I have a 5'5" baked

I have both. Get the Evo. It's far more performance as the waves get better and a bit less good in grovel surf.

benjamin m, I have had a couple of these now, the first one was a 5’6 and the second a 5’7. For me I enjoy the 5’7 way more as the extra litre on my shortboard really helps as I surf this in smaller less perfect waves. Hope that helps mate?

It's actually a board you don't want to oversize.. otherwise it won't work as it's designed. This board paddles very well. Just as a reference... I'm 187cm, 71kg and I'm surfing 5'4" EVO HE - average intermediate surfer :)
