I'm 77. We had the best music and man, the memories. My younger me just came back. Friends, good times, concerts, care free life, wonderfu music. Thank you
This hit me hard as well, I first heard this Masterpiece in 1969 by a local band doing a cover of it. Love it then and now . Emotions and memories all good.
Thats the way great music is supposed to act, like a virtual time machine. It brings the past back with memories so strong and brought to life that as James Earl Jones said in the movie Field of Dreams, "you have to brush them away". This is one of the best live performances I've ever heard. Perfection on every level. The arrangement, the orchestration, the musicians, all of it, and especially Gary's vocals. This is not the same singer he was in the 1960s. This was a life performance by a singer whose voice improved with time and aged like fine wine with the passing decades.
When I first heard Procol Harum sing a Whiter Shade of Pale in 1967. It's older than you thought. Still sounds great. I see the organist & drummer and Gary & maybe the guitarist still there.
Yes, Gary Brooker was one of the greats. Here is at 61 and sounded just as good as he did in 1967 when this song first came out. Sadly, We lost Gary to cancer in February of 2021 but his songs will live on.
This is just magical isn't it? One of the greatest songs ever written, and then performed by the great Gary Brooker. This is music at it's finest. Great reaction!
First heard this song as 15 year old in 1967 and it remains one of my all time favourites Gary brookers voice was incredible then in1969 I heard a salty dog another fantastic performance by this great singer you need to react to that song you won’t disappointed RIP GARY AND THANK YOU FOR THE GREAT MEMORIES
I am right there with you....l'm 66 and l found this few weeks ago. It was in my younger years....never forgot it. NOW l cant stop listening. You had a great reaction to this song!!!!
Dear Rob, I couldnt listnen to this song for 37 years, because ofthe passing of a highschool friend, this hé played by cassette recording and was played at his funeral.... please accept my virtual hug (the biggest one your heart can handle) from a stranger from the Netherlands ❤❤❤
This Hammond Orgen kills me every time again . This was His ever last Live performance , so thank God He got such great musician around who know what they gifted to Him and us , a never been forgotten last say good buy to all who loved the journey called life . R.I.P. Garry
A+ reaction to an A + performance… don’t worry about the tears…I still get them too… This was on the radio when I was a kid…60s I think…I’m almost 70 now…music is powerful Sending much love your way
When the live performance is better than the recording tells you what a great Garry Brooker was and is! I’m 54 years old but I remember my dad playing this song and I fell in love with the song. When I heard this live performance for the first time the memories of my child hood came rushing back. Remember sitting next to my dad’s stereo system and listening to Procol Harum . The memories. R.I.P. Garry Brooker❤️❤️❤️
Just found your channel and subscribed to it. You said this song brings back good memories for you, and I'm so happy. The song is timeless and so beautiful, but it reminds me of our sitting in a circle after school and played the 45 over and over, thinking and crying over our friends who had died that week in VietNam. I am 77 years old and grew up on Elvis, Bee Gees, Carpenters, John Denver, Beatles. Such good music we had in the 70's and we were so very fortunate and blessed.
Yup! I was gonna say at the beginning there is no way you could live to your age and not know this song. Lots of emotions all connect back to my youth. Keep going fellow Canadian.
Dito , heard this song first time at the age of 2,5 years , my mom told me I react to this like she don't can't understand . Every time in my Live I heard this song I realized whow much I love music , but this one was like a bottle of good old wine you harvest by yourself and when you take the first small taste of it ... all you discoverd in Life comes back to you and fill my Eyes every time with respect to the gift to travell thru what god gave to Us .
Memories.1970 i was in prison but we sang .through the windows. I sang this song.because i co hit the notes.many songs. Beautiful song.b.t.w.good luck .never give in.
I dont have any one memory with this song. But i cry everytime I hear it now because its just seems to remind me of times gone by and friends and family that have passed. Plus the fact that an orchestra adds more emotion, well for me it does. Then throw in a choir for a kicker and I'm a mess! 😂 Its just so beautiful and his voice got better as it aged.
Hi Rob, was hoping you would get to this one & very glad you did. Totally amazing!! Had the same effect on me the first time I heard this 2006 rendition a few years ago. A National Symphony, a choir an iconic 60's band and the great vocals of Gary B. - It's insane how good this is - I count it as one of the best live music performances ever. If/When you get time, check out Lucy Thomas's cover to this song. Take care
VERY COOL! I LOVE this song. 1969 high school graduate. I’ve also been a major fan of the Eagles for decades. My claims to fame are Jimi Hendrix, the Fifth Dimension and Simon and Garfunkel in about ‘68 and ‘82. I just missed the Beatles when I was about 12 years old. I’ve been in the Seattle area most of my life but the family was with my dad when he was doing active duty training for the Navy in New York City. Someone gave the guys tickets to a band he had never heard of before, so he turned them down. 😮 I probably would’ve been trampled it at Shea Stadium anyway, right? I saw Carlos Santana and Earth, Wind, and Fire not so long ago. ✌🏽
This was like a setup. Gray beard dude living under a rock somewhere was my initial assumption. BAM he hears the first verse and loses it and I’m in tears. Kudos brother. Rock on.
This live version is a lot better than the original version, Gary Brookers voice really matured into something special, the Danish National Orchestra are always on point and in my opinion are one of the best, I love the way this song is layered. Thank you 🇬🇧
Wow…..Great reaction video! First time viewer here (🤔 just might have to subscribe if you do more of this quality) 👍 As you said, music is powerful - brings back so many memories - of love lost, friends passed on, and yet so many fine memories as well. If you are interested, I have some comments, interpreting the lyrics of this song which gives it even a deeper dimension - I will share that at the end of this - (and sorry for this detailed commentary, but I think you will find it helpful if you listen to the song again and/or share it with others). Gary Brooker’s incredible singing in this live performance matched - or perhaps even exceeded - the quality of the original 1967 recording that took place 40 years earlier. The band’s name comes from a couple of possible sources. One of the band members in ‘67 had a cat named Procol Harum. This is Latin for “Far beyond these things”…. Personally, I think they named the band after the cat. 😁 This song and about 3 or 4 others defined the sound and the scene that was the “Summer of Love”. Unfortunately, that beautiful era only lasted about three years…. Innocence lost - marked by another outdoor concert in December ‘69 at Altamont - The Rolling Stones - they hired the Hells Angels motorcycle gang to be their “security” force - 4 people died that night. However, great music continued to come out from the late 60s all through to the mid 90s. But 1967 through Woodstock 1969 was magic. There has been much debate/misunderstanding regarding the lyrics. I believe I can unlock the mystery for you. The lyrics are mostly metaphorical. The song is about a young couple who are attending a party perhaps at a ballroom - maybe even on a ship. They were either entertainers for the crowd, or they were just part of the crowd dancing….”We skipped the Light Fandango” but instead did “cartwheels across the floor”, implying that they were having a great time, perhaps even on their way to getting drunk. The room seem to be shaking apart as they “ordered another drink”, but the waiter brought a tray of many drinks. As the night wore on, the young man was fast becoming interested in having a more private intimate time with this young girl…. But yet even through her near drunkenness, she sensed it, and became frightened. As the young man shuffled through his “playing cards” - a metaphor for looking for that winning hand to convince her to go with him - she again was unable or unwilling to give into him. Even as he told her stories, and lies about himself to impress and take advantage of her she knew she was potentially headed for trouble as “The truth was plain to see”. The vestal virgin metaphor clearly implied that she was young, inexperienced, and not ready for what she feared was his ultimate intent. But he kept on with his tales and lies, and he “would not let her be”…..ramping up the pressure on her to give in. This frightened her tremendously. I know that Gary Brooker and his cowriter actually wrote two more verses, that were never studio recorded (except that there are a few other live performances by Procol Harum that include the 3rd & 4th verse - which makes an otherwise spectacular pop song from the late ‘60’s way too long and it becomes tedious to listen to). The 3rd & 4th verses are also full of images and metaphors which keep the listener always a bit unsure how that story ends. Again, I want to say your reaction video was excellent. Well done
A whiter shade of pale came out in the 60s, it was iconic. You got confused because you read a winter shade etc. I don't think the orchestra intro here did it justice either. My husband asked them to play this tune in the church before we got married in 1976. The organist was not the best. I knew when you heard the guy start to sing "skip alive fandango" you would recognise it, and you did. Wonderful song.
LYRICS: We skipped the light fandango turned cartwheels 'cross the floor I was feeling kinda seasick but the crowd called out for more The room was humming harder as the ceiling flew away When we called out for another drink the waiter brought a tray And so it was that later as the miller told his tale that her face, at first just ghostly, turned a whiter shade of pale She said, 'There is no reason and the truth is plain to see.' But I wandered through my playing cards and would not let her be one of sixteen vestal virgins who were leaving for the coast and although my eyes were open they might have just as well've been closed She said, 'I'm home on shore leave,' though in truth we were at sea so I took her by the looking glass and forced her to agree saying, 'You must be the mermaid who took Neptune for a ride.' But she smiled at me so sadly that my anger straightway died If music be the food of love [see note, left, about this verse + its opening] then laughter is its queen and likewise if behind is in front then dirt in truth is clean My mouth by then like cardboard seemed to slip straight through my head So we crash-dived straightway quickly and attacked the ocean bed
Watching this video and you end up very emotional with tears, that pretty much normal human being, but if you don’t feel as above mentioned, men you better to see the specialist immediately, coz something wrong on you😂😂

This is a song from the 1960's! Loved it when I was a kid! But Gary Brooker never sounded better than in this concert!
Yes, Gary Brooker was one of the greats. Here is at 61 and sounded just as good as he did in 1967 when this song first came out. Sadly, We lost Gary to cancer in February of 2021 but his songs will live on.
Sounds better than the 1967 version. Like a good bottle of wine, just improves with age.
@billprice8596: Brooker died February 2022.
It hit me too.. like I saw my life passing by.. Beautiful reaction and I love when men allow tears to come (please excuse a swede for the english)
The older we get, the more the tears flow..... I turn 69 on May 9th. And I have tears in my eyes.
A man in buckets of tears is a proper man 👍😏
It hits us all the same way, Robk, those of us who were there.
This tune is at the top of many musicians favorites list. It's an absolutely brilliant song.
This is just magical isn't it? One of the greatest songs ever written, and then performed by the great Gary Brooker. This is music at it's finest. Great reaction!

I'm 73 now but in 1967, I was 16 or 17 the first time I saw it.
Yea brother. 70 year old vet here. These songs are the soundtrack of my life
Nothing like the sound of a Hammond organ to take me back to the 60's.
They first sang this song in 1957, I was 10 when I first heard it! NOW 65 years later , I KNOW all the songs of my ERA!!!
@lin 1967

A great reaction. Thank you for strengthening the memories.
Darn right about the "emotions" 👍
LYRICS:
We skipped the light fandango
turned cartwheels 'cross the floor
I was feeling kinda seasick
but the crowd called out for more
The room was humming harder
as the ceiling flew away
When we called out for another drink
the waiter brought a tray
And so it was that later
as the miller told his tale
that her face, at first just ghostly,
turned a whiter shade of pale
She said, 'There is no reason
and the truth is plain to see.'
But I wandered through my playing cards
and would not let her be
one of sixteen vestal virgins
who were leaving for the coast
and although my eyes were open
they might have just as well've been closed
She said, 'I'm home on shore leave,'
though in truth we were at sea
so I took her by the looking glass
and forced her to agree
saying, 'You must be the mermaid
who took Neptune for a ride.'
But she smiled at me so sadly
that my anger straightway died
If music be the food of love [see note, left, about this verse + its opening]
then laughter is its queen
and likewise if behind is in front
then dirt in truth is clean
My mouth by then like cardboard
seemed to slip straight through my head
So we crash-dived straightway quickly
and attacked the ocean bed
Beautiful song. So many memories as a young teenager in love with my cute girlfriend. New Subscriber too
