Public Lecture-Profiling the Invisible: Quantum Mechanics and the Unseen Universe

  • Lecture Date: Tuesday, February 22, 2005. When we explore Nature at distances much smaller than the size of an atom, we find new and mysterious physical principles. At such small sizes, particles are governed by "quantum theory". Quantum theory tells us that some aspects of particle motion cannot be known as a matter of principle. This is a challenge to those of us who would like to do experiments to understand how these particles behave. Fortunately, quantum theory, for all its uncertainty, has its own logic. It predicts patterns in the subatomic world that hold definite information and can be measured to high precision. In this lecture, I will explain how we use these patterns in experiments with high energy particles to learn about the nature of the subnuclear forces and about the structure of the universe.     This is very good - not only did it explain some possible realizations of dark matter, but this really gave me a "feel" for how scientists actually USE those particle accelerators to suss out stuff about the world. Well done!

    Perhaps a more accurate way to put it is: This kind of science shows that the universe is governed by probability.

      It's more likely that we are currently only able to understand it in terms of probability. There's probably a more advanced math that might give a more exact answer to this stuff but either we haven't found it yet or our brains aren't complicated enough to understand it.

    Adding a dash of philosophy to the cocktail, I would say: there exists no nonprobabilistic science of phenomena. Physics cannot deal with things in themselves but only with how phenomena work. It is wise not to forget this when extrapolating from physics to metaphysics, from experiments to the universe as a whole. Otherwise, we are just producing naive realism metaphysics.

      That is the million dollar question. Do you read your Bible. It is a history book nothing else. They that came from the sky. It is a history book in my opinion. They, we're badass. A technology that wasn't comprehend. I have no problem with that at all. I'm just wondering if we can reach that level. That would be great.
