I didn't know people were doing d-star on HF, that's pretty cool! You're right about the antennas though. I'm also enjoying the 705. I guess Yaesu won't bother with another portable radio 😂
    Thanks for the video Bob.

The IC-705 ia an AMAZING little radio! ☺ - Especially to someone who first got on the air 56 years ago. Started hamming at 16 years old; had my Technician class license before my driver's license! It led me to a 45 - year career, starting in consumer electronics, working for a small local TV repair shop, moving into being a commercial 2-wy radio tech, then industrial controls (NC & CNC machine tools, some industrial robotics), back into 2-way radio for a few years (including doing some ham gear repair professionally), then spent my final 20 years working for a major enterprise - level data storage systems manufacturer. Went from working on late vacuum - tube era equioment uo to SMT.
Now retired, I enjoy restoring vintage rigs that were "dream radios" when I was in my teens & early 20's. It's not all nostalgia, though; my early days on 6 meter AM turned me into a VHF / UHF / microwave weak - signal operator, still more active in that aspect of the hobby) up to 1296 MHz. currently, planning on going higher). I just found out about HF D-Star recently & gave it a first try last week with the IC-705; heard several signals, no 2 - way QSO's yet, but that was with the barefoot IC-705, & my HF antennas are all simplr dipoles; planning on trying it again in the near future. Maybe with a bit of luck, we'll work you! ☺

    • @kenthufford743

DSTAR HF VOICE is simplex, just like most all other HF. Your DSTAR radio encrypts you, you transmit and the DSTAR radio on the other end decrypts. Like simplex on 146.52. Watch the video again. Bob does not link anywhere.

Have you purchased the IC 705? If you're familiar with this radio and care to share your opinion, I'd welcome your input. I'm a total newcomer to Ham radio and am going through a mountain of information so that I can make a wise purchase, before the end of the year. I'm looking for opinions and recommendations on what radios I should be considering, I need help narrowing it down to just a couple of good radios that will meet my needs.
I'm looking for the best radio for emergency communications during a worst case scenario. I saw this IC 705 radio reviewed very favorably on another channel and it's got some nice features. But I just learned that there's an issue during a true grid-down situation between analog and digital Ham radio communications (Analog was said to be better in a bad situation - but I don't yet understand why that's the case or what that looks like in a radio's list of features.)
I'm looking for a new, good quality, durable, reliable, mobile Ham radio (not mounted in my truck - something I could carry in a case and use both at home and on the road).
While I could see myself possibly enjoying it as a hobby - the whole reason for this purchase is for emergency communication, so I'm not interested in paying for 'bells and whistles' that a passionate hobbyist might enjoy - I'm only interested in features that are truly meaningful in the operation of the radio such as: watts, multiple power sources, larger display screen for aging vision, durability, (made in the US if that is even possible), and quality of sound both transmitting and receiving, without having to purchase additional external equipment.
I'm looking to purchase just one good quality radio - I don't wish to get a "beginner's" set up, and plan to upgrade in the future - I'd just like to make the correct choice, one time and not waste my limited funds.
Thank you for any suggestions or direction to further information - there's so much info to cover!

  • @loughkb

Well I guess that's about as wide as AM, so no big deal on HF.
I think, as far as communication goes, I'd prefer SSB. More intelligibility.
I wonder if anyone has done a test to see how low of a signal you can get away with and still maintain unbroken audio over Dstar, vs clearly understand the voice under SSB. That might be an interesting experiment to do. (Once I get one of these. :-)
However, as I understand it, dstar allows for sending additional data over the transmission. Text and images? Maybe GPS data? I'm sure there are lots of tricks up it's sleeve.

DSTAR on HF is 6.2 khz wide, about the same as AM. DSTAR on HF will never replace SSB. CW. If you have a good DSTAR HF signal it will decrypt all the normal DSTAR sent data; Callsign, name, and GPS location.

    • @loughkb
      @loughkb 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@kenthufford743 Looking at the scope on his radio, it seemed to vary in width. Some stations were around 6khz, but his transmissions and some of the other stations were 10khz wide, going from +5 to -5 khz on the scope. That's ok though, as long as the operator is considerate and makes sure he's not encroaching on nearby qsos.

But as cool as this is, military already has digital over HF so ive already seen it in action, but i'd rather sideband some high power stuff. Im so over trying to get Dstar to work. Im fully registered etc.... can't use terminal mode, cant hear anything, cant do crap. But I could get DMR working in 5 literal minutes first time I ever tried it.
