Kate Malone was born in London in 1959; she studied at Bristol Polytechnic and received an MA in ceramics from the Royal College of Art. Her main studio and large kilns are in London, and she also works out of satellite studios in Provence and Barcelona. She has exhibited widely in London as well as internationally and is known for her large-scale works and public commissions, such as the children’s Library of the New Public Jubilee Library Brighton: Wall of a Thousand Stories (2005), comprising 91 wall pieces to be used for improvised interactive storytelling. Malone’s most recent work is a sculptural wall for the UK headquarters of American Express.
Mr. and Mrs. Tutti Atomic were commissioned by the Mint Museum of Craft + Design to celebrate the opening of the new Mint Museum Uptown at the Levine Center for the Arts in October 2010. They are part of a series of commissions called Project Ten Ten Ten. Mrs. Tutti Frutti, a short, sturdy, and vibrant pot meant to convey a life force and the promise of growth, had already been conceived when Malone visited the Mint. She was struck by the sense of family and fun at the institution, and knew that Mrs. needed a Mr. Mr. Atomic, although taller, does not dominate his clay wife. His muted colors and more attenuated form provide a balance-the couple truly completes each other. Malone sees her creations as two separate entities coming together, where one plus one somehow equals three (three, of course, being the Mint Museum).

Fantastic... but how do you avoid the "balls" exploding when the piece is fired as there is no way the air can escape?

at 2:30 she is taking a pin tool a poking a hole at the bottom of the ball. That allows the air to escape.
