I took a weather and climate class at OU in 2000 with the creator of Mesonet system and he was considered the top expert on tornadic activity. Dr. Andy White is dead now but i kept in touch with him over the years. He said storm chasers have accomplished nothing in tornado research. Moreover they never get out of the car to help anyone. They never drive ahead of the path of a tornado to help anyone. All they do is record tornados..record death and loss. Thank God we don't need them anymore with our use of cell phone recording. Storm chasers are selfish scared people who like death and destruction.

Another statistic many people aren’t aware of with this tornado, was that it passed through Moore’s horse country, 120 horses were killed. Human life and the loss of homes and lives is always the priority, but many people love their horses like family, they can live up to thirty years and be a true companion. Not to mention the financial losses. I can’t imagine having a tornado hit my town and having losses to this magnitude. The local veterinarians interviewed said they had to have euthanasia solutions brought in from other towns and just went barn to barn euthanizing injured animals beyond help, and hundreds had to be treated. So sad for the families who suffered these losses.

That's awful; I had no idea so many horses were injured/killed. I've always wondered about livestock and horses when tornadoes strike rural areas, but you rarely hear people talk about them. I wonder how many enclosed animals die every year in tornadoes. It's depressing to think about on top of the loss of human life.

This tornado stands out to me because it’s amazing how much it changed during its life cycle. It started as a small cone, then it worked itself into a long cone. Then it turned into a massive wedge that you could barely see, and then it just grew into this massive monster even bigger, it was just so scary, looking completely different from what it was when it started.

What I find so sinister about this tornado is the fact that it was moving rather quickly while it was intensifying, especially as it was crossing over into Moore. Then, once it was inside of Moore, that thing just started slugging along, even moving at Jarrell's speeds at times. It's as if the tornado had a vendetta.

El Reno, one of the most disgusting days of my life yet sad. I was 7 at the time it hit. I was at my babysitters house with 3 other kids, that i’m not in contact with. It hit us in moore, 2013, as the short stated. I remember it as if it were barely a month ago, that has forever traumatized me. When it hit we were in a closet ducking our heads with pillows covering our heads. When the tornado hit, it ripped our roof off and a wall down to its foundation. A tree had fallen on the house onto our closet, the tree had saved most of us. Sadly one of the kids got a very bad head injury from the tree falling causing his head to literally be crushed inside out. When i could see again i can still remember the sting in my eyes from the junk flying around. We waited a bit and the baby sitter stood up, at the ripped up house. A day later people were looking for others stuck in the junk the tornado had flung around. They had found the kid, his name was mason. His face was unrecognizable.. I saw him. I felt horrible while barely understanding the concept of death. Every time i think about it, including while writing this comment, leaves a disgusting turn in my stomach and sense of empathy for him. I wrote this to show the true terror of tornadoes, especially this one. Never ever think tornadoes are “fun”. I am forever traumatized by this memory and had 3 years of counseling due to it. My mom has kept in touch with that baby sitter. Nobody from that day has been the same every since. Im shaking writing this. Even after counseling i’ve developed long term depression. Im not the same, nobody was and has not been since. Please understand that natural disasters like this are NOTHING to joke about. Im sharing this story of my childhood for pure education and warning. Please do not feel sympathy for me but take this comment as realization that tornadoes are nothing to underestimate no matter the size. We are not immortal, and we can die at any age. Be happy every day you live as its limit is very real. Anyone could’ve ended up like that kid, i am sorry he was the one to end up like that. I am yet grateful I survived. I cant even explain the amount of stress my mom had that day and since. Im proud to have the mother i do. She has survived El Reno, Divorce, Depression, and having foster parents. My mom is a true warrior, no matter her current strength. Thank you for reading this and take this as nothing but educational purposes only. Every one of us is lucky to be alive and have a chance at life for the challenge it is. Have an amazing day or night.

Yanked out anchor bolts, shredded pavement, plumbing yanked and shredded out of foundations, this was a May 3rd/Jarrell/Smithville type tornado. This thing also has one of the angriest intensification phases I have ever seen. This thing was ALREADY violent and causing EF4 damage as a rope not long after touching down. Interesting, I’m also a Wisconsinite that lives in the Moore area (actually live just a hair north of where this tornado went). I moved here in 2019 and I can’t help but think if this tornado happened now instead of 2013, it would be even more devastating. The Moore and Newcastle areas have been absolutely booming areas in-regards to population growth, even in the short time I’ve lived in OK.
While I’m not a storm chaser, the one good thing about chasing tornados in Oklahoma that makes it a little bit safer than Wisconsin is the terrain makes it easier to see. There’s a lot less forests and hills, so it’s really difficult to get “caught off-guard” by a tornado. When I was a kid, my parents’ farm got hit by a tornado and due to wooded and hilly terrain as well as the tornado hitting at dusk, we never even saw it.
I can only imagine trying to chase tornados in Wisconsin is a difficult venture…unless it’s somewhere a bit flatter with more crop land like the southern portion.

I was lucky; just lost shingles from my roof. Others 1 mile west of me lost everything; 1700 homes destroyed or damaged in total. As I recall (and miraculously), there was only one fatality, a man who suffered a heart attack during the storm. That's not true. Cole, Etowah and Shawnee, Oklahoma were hit by major tornadoes this past spring. Cole, which is just south of Moore, was actually hit twice by tornadoes last spring. An EF-4 hit Idabel, Oklahoma last Fall, and last winter Oklahoma set a state record for tornadoes in the month of February. You'd literally have to change the geography of Oklahoma to get tornadoes to stop happening here. The difference is that tornadoes are starting to happen at a higher frequency to the east than they used to. Tornado Alley isn't shifting, it's expanding.

@@richgerow3472 Cole EF3 tornado from this last year in 2013 made my hair on my neck immediately stand on end because I instantly thought of Moore OK. Reason being it was so close to Moore & initially behaved much like the previous EF5 when it first began. Tornado alley is definitely expanding eastward. Not shifting. I had suspicions a few years back well before people started blaming it on climate change. After seeing just news in general of them happening in the East all
Of the time now I decided to do my own investigation & what I turned up was the ground truth: it scares me. I made my very own "Google My maps" (2 of them) & I labeled each tornado on the map since 1999 by year & rank. What turned up is eye opening. I still have those maps, & continue to add to them as the years go by. I used National Weather Services records on the storms to plot each tornado on the maps. But it's not fake: it's absolutely expanding. I wasn't convinced until I found out myself with ground proof. I even decided to send those 2 maps back to them by email (I'm certified SKYWARN that is how I can do so.) What I found was just too big of a deal not to ignore whether they knew or not. It has taken me a few years to make those maps.

Not so fast! I had an aunt who lived in Vancouver, Washington in the 1970s, and an EF3 ripped through that town and killed six people. It can happen anywhere.

I was born and grew up in Oklahoma till I was 6 yrs old. Right before we moved out of Oklahoma we had a huge tornado, that was 50 yrs ago and to this day,I still remember it. There is nothing like going through or living through a tornado in Oklahoma. But I still love my home state ❤

Yes, it is absolutely true that the EF5 tornado is a very scary, deadly and amazing monster. In fact, the EF5 tornado is more terrifying than the Cat5 hurricane. This video is amazing thank you🌪️⚡🌪️

We had a tornado pass through in south florida as an ef2 and the fear we felt was intense...this obviously makes ours pale in comparison but having gone through the fear and the damage after has us always praying for those in tornado alley

Part of it is that it doesn't take long for a small tornado to warp into a giant, and any shape of tornado can reach EF4. So you never really know what you're dealing with til its there.

This tornado and the el Reno tornado that traveled south through the city was beyond frightening. I don’t think I’ll ever forget that day. So weird that our weather pattern changed after this event. Our tornado seasons are not even comparable anymore.

It totally ticks me off when people refer to storm chasers as idiots and dumbasses. I dont see you out there risking your life to give warning as to whats going on and where the storm is. They are heroes in my eyes. They dont take their jobs lightly and they dont just wake up one day and say "ima chase tornadoes today". It takes education and a lot of it. Do not underestemate the chasers. They're the one saving your ungrateful lives.

I remember this day like it was yesterday. Will never forget it. I had just moved back from Houston to live with my brother. My sister and I were driving trying to find shelter. We stopped at churches anywhere we could, but everywhere was locked. We were able to get away but I’ll never forget looking over and seeing that monster.
