I got covid and was forced to come back after 5 days. I was so ill and sick and was forced to work through it and screamed at in my face over this stuff and watched like a child because I was too sick to work but couldn’t call out.

My job has its paid tied to the wages of federal employees, so even though it's menial, it pays quite well. They always act like they're being generous, but it's completely out of their control. They, too, use the fact that we're paid extra to say we should do better work for them. Like, no, this is still less than what minimum wage would be if it kept up with the cost of living.
I had a prof that makes children books, she had 2 suggestions to get in the industry. 1) enroll yourself in the society of illustrators, the HQ is in New York. 2) look for artist and directors with the same art style in your target industry (movies, comics, etc) and once a month or once every two months send them a post card of your artwork, eventually they’ll take notice and reach out
My professored told us to do postcarding, but I never once got a response from it, I think it use to be more popular pre mega internet
don’t take advice from the old school illustrators 😭😭 they all got their start before the internet so any advice they give you is outdated and irrelevant. however, i think the modern version of this method would be cold emailing publishers/recruiters/other artists saying you’re interested in working with them and attaching some sample pieces or a link to your portfolio.
@@realmothchuI don't want to be a negative person, but I'm definitely looking for additional advice. As a person with an email account, it never gets opened. 😅 Recruiters might be slightly better though.
@kkderobst 20 years ago when I graduated, we were told to do the same. I made these really cool little "books" of samples of my art...also never heard back. I do know one or two of my classmates had some success I think with it, but I sorta quickly realized I wasn't cut out for freelance work!
I still prefer to see someone before I interview them. So my add always reads, “ apply in person “ at so n so address. I’ve been able to weed out the problem with some before I decide to interview them.

As a gen xer this is accurate 💖
I wish. I started at the current company I work for (2 years) as an associate making $9 an hour. This was for about 9 months before I got I promotion two positions up as a shift manager and started making $13. Few months ago told my district manager that the current pay just could not cover the cost of living and that I would either be paid more here, or I'd have to find a new job. She told me she would see what she could do.
She could do a .39 cent raise. That was it.
I only stay because I love my coworkers and my store (and the employee discount helps me care for my animals) but the job is so godawfully horrendous that we've all been talking about leaving and people from multiple other stores in our district have already done that.
Your a what?

I LOVE this. I sometimes find that painting on bags can turn out subpar, but this is incredible. Devastated it's already sold, within just a couple of hours!
Gotta use leather paint, or a good quality fabric/ screen printing paint that stretches when dried. Acrylic can be a bit finicky because even though it’s somewhat pliable it will still crack on fabric.

I remember finding out at my office job that a guy was making twice what I was and that he didn’t have any education. I was a single mom with atleast some college credits. Twice as much?!?!
The moment you should have walked away is when they said they were only going to pay you $9 an hour. That’s absolutely insane
Were are you living? Is us so expensive country?
@@johnny98989 Yes. $9 an hour isn't a livable wage in the U.S.
So Johnny it's quite simple in America the wage required to live in certain areas changes based off of the state within the country. Some states are worse than others in regards to high living, in which case a high wage is also necessary. Also when you went to school and got a college degree or even just a certificate $9 an hour anywhere within the country is ridiculous. There's no way you're paying your rent, let alone your college debts.
@@naheleshiriki5496 Damn- from where I'm at, the food is about $7-10 per meal. Sadly part time is an average of $6-8 base fee per hour 💀
@@johnny98989yeah, it’s expensive. You’d barely be able to afford soap and toilet paper on that much an hour. Then you have to buy food and pay for other things. You’d need more than one job and you’d barely be making it. Assuming you’re single. If you have kids, game over.
Every retail job is like this. You will do menial labor, be subject to constant corporate visits, do all your training in the back rooms of the business. All retail jobs teach you to be better customers, and helps you understand the gigantic machine (the business) you are now servicing and keeping going.
Worked at a certain grocery store and they made us to an hour worth of these online quizzes about the business a day… EVEN AFTER TRAINING. they expected you to do it on your one 30 minute break or when you are clock out….. part of the reason i left. ridiculous.
that is not much manual labor that is mainly mental and emotional labor. I can't imagine you can do it without becoming dead inside.
@@seaurchinted
If this was in the US, I would've reported that as basically time theft. If they aren't paying you to do work right then (such as a break), you're hourly, and they're pushing off-the-clock work things: instant penalization.
Some states get so strict about this that even asking a work-related question on break is enough. Most just won't allow work on state mandatory breaks or any time the company designates "off-the-clock."
Next time, I'd be like, "as long as you pay me overtime/on-call wages, sure."😂
I worked at Ricky’s which is a beauty/convenient store. It was my first day and they wouldn’t let new people on register. So we had to wonder the aisles answering questions. Most of the questions were “where are the face paints” (it was Halloween). Anyways after a day of overstimulation and low productivity I was ready to go home my brother was meeting me I was gonna be out. One employee came to me and was like “can you stay later” I said no because my brother was meeting me. She then says “you wanna stay here right” I was seasonal btw so I say (maybe) and she then says “well usually people try to make a good impression and stay late” she essentially wanted to go early and I was like “sorry can’t” and thennnn I never came back lol. No call no text just made an impression so to say
Lol. Like frankly, you're not making a good enough impression on me to want to stay! 😂 "Nice try," though 😂
U are WAY too talented and AMAZING to be asked to solicit people who are already beyond rude since the beginning of the pandemic!
Even “polite” people would get ugly with telemarketers! I cannot believe that you painted that seemingly effortlessly!
