  • Ahhh....beautiful Lake Nakuru. This wondrous place has been on my safari bucket list for quite some time and I'm so excited to finally have the chance to see it!
Lake Nakuru is one of the most well known nature parks in the Kenya because of its prolific bird watching and rare wildlife species. It's a vibrant and luscious place that's home to over 400 different bird species! Many of which we spotted during or safari.
Millions of flamingos used to flock here annually, creating a sea of pink that stretched as far as the eye could see. This lake was prime habitat for wading birds such as flamingos because of the its high alkalinity. This high alkalinity keeps the water PH levels balanced which in turn supports small organic life such as insect larvae and algae. Bird absolutely LOVE feeding on these aquatic organisms which is why so many birds are attracted to this relatively shallow lake.
Due to rising water levels, flamingo populations have decreased substantially in the last decade. In fact, there was one point when hardly any were recorded here. In recent years, however, the flamingos have slowly been making their return to Nakuru which means its still likely you'll see huge flocks during your visit!
The flamingos have been making their return because surrounding lakes with desirable conditions have ALSO been flooding in recent years, meaning that the flamingos are starting to adapt to the deeper water conditions that Lake Nakuru is now experiencing. It's still uncertain if they will return to this place in the sheer numbers they used to, but regardless it's still a wonderful experience to see any of these pink birds at all.
In this safari VLOG I take you inside the gates of Lake Nakuru National Park to witness its remarkable wildlife species. We're going to go bird watching, look for rhinos, and enjoy all the pleasant scenery of this place. I'll also show you the camp we stayed at during our visit.

Hello Jeff: Since I have started to plan on our trip to Kenya in June 2023, I have found your channel as quite helpful in my planning. I always look forward to your new videos. You are doing an excellent job! You also have a wonderful partner (a fellow Canadian) too! Besides wildlife, me and my fellow travellers are quite interested in birds and we'll be visiting Lake Nakuru, Lake Bogoria, and possibly Lake Naivasha, along with Amboseli, Masai Mara, and Ol Pejeta. I would really appreciate if you could share the details of the bird book you are using in this episode. Thank you for doing an awesome job!

Hello, thank you for your comment and following my channel! I’m so glad you’ve found the videos informative and helpful for your trip planning. So appreciate your support!
Sounds like you have the perfect bird-focused itinerary set. The photo bird book I have is called “Birds of East Africa” by Dave Richards. It’s handy, light, and almost pocket size. There are definitely more detailed books with more species in it out to consider though.
Do let me know if you need me to link you with a tour operator or travel advisor to assist with your trip planning. I work with several!
      All the best,
      Jeff H

@@Jeff_Hyer Thank you Jeff for the quick reply. I have found the book with Amazon Canada and put it in my wish list. Also, thank you for the offer to connect me with tour operator. We do have a tour operator and we have been planning our trip with them for last couple of months. Everything is pretty much at the final stage. I would contact you if I have any more question. Thanks again for doing a fantastic job in focusing on some beautiful things Kenya could offer.

@@Jeff_Hyer I’m looking into a Safari to Kenya perhaps in October 2024-2025. Solo. Looking at EF Go Ahead Tours. Saw your video on costs. I think they are in the realm of possibility.

Is the ticket valid- over night say from 2 p.m. from day 1 to 1:59 p.m. on day 2? You pay once but you get to enter the park on two different days within a 24 hour period?

It's such a beautiful place!!! I will be visiting Kenya this summer and I am looking forward for it! May I ask a photographic question: what's the lens that the co-traveller of yours was using? Was she satisfied with the Flamingo photos she took?

No one can truly explain why the lakes in the the Kenyan Rift Valley are flooding. The theory I most want to believe is that conservation efforts in the forests upstreams are finally yielding more water resulting in the lakes expanding to their historical size.

Hello Jeff. How much was the game drive per person? And do they offer you a vehicle for the same or you must have your own?

    • @Jeff_Hyer
      @Jeff_Hyer  ปีที่แล้ว

Our tour rate included several national park visits that lasted 10 days in Kenya, so it’s hard for me to accurately tell you the cost for just one day in Lake Nakuru. If you’re looking to book a single game drive I recommend reaching out to Gorilla O’Clock safari tour operator for inquiries (gorillaoclock.com)

A "flamboyance" of flamingos 🦩 I'll definitely gratuitously peppering my conversations showing off with that. My friends and family will get sick of hearing it 😂
