- If the hard drive fails in this DVD recorder how do you replace it without having to spend money at a service centre, which is likely to be uneconomic? This video takes you through the whole process. Some parts are done in real time to give an idea of how long something takes. It does now record and play back using the replaced hard drive.

Thanks for this video. I recently picked up a used EH65 as part of a bundle of used players. Its drive seems ok but Ive saved the firmware you linked. Found the power button no longer worked due to someone spilling something on that end. Replaced with a button out of a old MS mouse. The plastic plunger inside has to be heavily filed down to lever the larger mouse switch but it works great now.
That's an interesting video - it's a shame it's so hard to find firmware for various pany models. I've long been messing around with the task of cloning panasonic hard drives, but I'm still not at the point where they work once cloned. But for anyone who wants to know, the programmes are stored as mpeg2, and I wrote a quick Linux program that grabbed them all, noting the timestamp change to begin a new file, the output can then be used in VLC or remade into DVDs. The downside is you end up with some of the old deleted bits, but generally speaking the recordings are intact.

i have a Panasonic DMR-E100HEB, i can remove the 3 small screws at the back , but the two at the side i cant, no matter what screwdriver i use, what type of screwdriver are you using ?
Just a standard small or medium cross head. However, these days they often use funny screws for which you need a screwdriver with a special head. Look at the head with a magnifying glass and see if it is a tri-wing one or something else. It is always worth getting a set of such screwdrivers to have in case you need them. Which country are you in? In New Zealand you can get a good quality set from Jaycar. Otherwise if in the US try Amazon. HTH

I have the Panasonic DMR-ES15. Its basically the same as yours except it doesn't have the HDD. I opened mine to replace a bad capacitor on the power supply and all the boards look exactly the same inside as the DMR-EH55. It doesn't have a fan on the back but that could be added. I have a spare 160GB PATA/IDE HDD that i aquired free.
If i bought a flat flex cable to 40pin IDE adaptor from china on eBay (assuming they're available), could my DMR-ES15 be firmware upgraded to the DMR-EH55 with your firmware CD?
Sorry I have no idea but I guess you could try it (at your own risk). You might need a cradle to mount the HD on if you want to install it. Good luck!
Hi, I'm getting the Please Wait message on my DRM-EH55. The capacitors on the board look good. If i get a new HD for this and firmware; does the firmware flash update the hard drive or a chip on the board?

CAN I USE THIS UNIT BY REMOVING THE HARD DRIVE?
IT MAKES A VERY ANNOYING HUMMING NOISE WHEN TURNED OFF. And I just don't need a recorder. Otherwise I'll just get a new dvd player for $50 usd and take this to the recycling center. Actually, what about replacing it with a solid state drive, with the necessary wire adapters of course; will it work?
Sorry I don't know. However the unit seems to pick up some basic OS type info from the hard disc so may need it to be there. Doubt a solid state drive will work but may be interesting for you to try. You should be able to pick up a cheap HD, perhaps one that doesn't hum too loudly. That would give you the option to record and also give it some resale value. Good luck!

Now that ssd have tumbled in price since this video was made, I wonder if anyone has attempted replacing the hdd with an ssd of the same capacity.

Hi, I am sorry I don't know but you could try a different brand but the same type and see what happens. You can sometimes find WD 1600BB hard drives on eBay; there are a few on there at the moment. What country are you in though as it may need to be posted?

Hi, can you explain how the firmware update disc was created for the one that actually installed the firmware? I'm trying to update a Panasonic DMR-E30 DVD recorder with the latest firmware "D5-085". I've burned several CD-R's under ISO-9660 (which is the recommended filesystem according to the manual), as well as Joliet & Mode 2, but the unit fails to recognize the disc, giving me a "U11" error code. The firmware upgrade manual requires me to use Windows XP because it uses ISO-9660, but Windows 7 & 10 doesn't support ISO-9660. I have both ImgBurn & CDBurnerXP, but it hasn't gotten me anywhere. I've previously updated the firmware successfully several years ago without any problems, and that was the same model. There are two firmware files that exist, "UPDATE_DMR_FIRM" & "PANA_DVD.FRM". What is the proper way to create a firmware update CD or DVD, which recordable disc should I use, and what is the proper filesystem & write speed that the recorder will recognize?
There is no mention of the recommended write speed for the update CD, it just says ISO-9660. So I've written it at 1x speed, but it didn't work.
@@kyokochan81 I think you need to give the file the name PANADVD.FRM at least that was the one that worked for me. The file type FRM probably identifies it as firmware. However I have no way of being sure what it should be for your model.
or maybe it was PANA_DVD.FRM it was almost 7 years ago now!
Hi Mike, thank you for creating this youtube clip. I have a dmr-EH65 model with lots of critical family content that I have recorded, sadly the unit has stopped working. QUESTION PLEASE. I just brought a spare working second unit which is also a EH65 model, do you know if I can just swap the hard drives over?? I am just worried that the harddisk mightbe erased so thought I would ask you. The content on the harddisk is very important to me and I really want to get it onto a computer.
Hmm... beyond my expertise I'm afraid. I don't think it would be erased but like you I would be very hesitant to do it. I suggest you ring the Panasonic help line in your country; they can sometimes be very helpful and sometimes less so and they tend to suggest you go to an authorised dealer. If you could get or borrow a third unit then you could swap the hard disc from one to the other (2nd to third or vice versa) before you risk all your valued content. They should be quite cheap second hand, depending on which country you are in and you could re-sell a spare one later. Wish you well in your efforts!

Hi I have a DMR-BWT720 with this problem.This might seem a daft question for you but when you talk about firmware are you referring to the firmware that would normally be downloaded via the internet to update this machine when its working properly, the same firmware from the Panasonic support page (av.jpn.support.panasonic.com/support/global/cs/bd/download/bwt720/uk.) or is it something totally different.
Is the download from filedropper only relevant to the DMR-EH55 or can it be used on all the panasonic dvd recorders.

By "firmware" I mean software that is installed into the machine, presumably into a chip inside. The firmware referred to in this video had to be obtained from a Panasonic service agent here in New Zealand as the one on the Panasonic web site did not work (see video). As far as I know it only works with the EH55. You may find that the one for your machine from panasonic.com works fine; I'm sorry I don't know. Good luck!

my Panasonic DMR-EH55 has got a U81 fault,i dont really want to repair it as i have a new one now..but is there any way to get my programs of the HDD,say on to my PC
+rgm501 Hmm ... I'm not sure. The error does not seem to be a hard disc error so I suppose you could try finding someone with the same model and swapping your hard disc into it temporarily in order to copy your videos on to DVD then you can can put your DVD into your computer's DVD drive to copy the videos off. Before you do that you could try unplugging it and leaving it unplugged for about 30 minutes. Then start it up again. If the U81 re-appears then hold the channel up and channel down buttons simultaneously for about 5 seconds to re-set the micro-processor inside and see if that enables you to start it up and copy your videos to DVD. Hope this helps.
The newer models you have to register the hdd in the register options to the machine before you can do anything else

Fantastic!!!! I have heard that you must replace the HDD with exactly the same model as is in the machine to begin with. If not, it won't work. Is this true? My unit has the 200GB drive in it and I know that the unit is "hardwired" for the drive capacity so it's as you explained, you can't upgrade the drive capacity. But, do I have to get exactly the same model as the one that's currently in there? That could be problematic.
You will need to get a similar hard drive that need not be exactly the same model number. Look at the drive reference e.g. mine was WD1600 then some letters. The very last letters on the drive may not matter. You should aim for a 200Gb PATA drive - are you sure it is not 250Gb i.e. WD2500xx. It may be a "caviar" drive look at the label. A larger drive may work even though it will only be formatted to 200Gb. Try checking the WD web site or Googling your drive code and trying to find others that are compatible. You could try ringing a Panasonic or WD help line if one is available. You can sometimes find reconditioned drives on Amazon.com very cheap. HTH
There are a few currently on eBay for US$25 from a place in California, of course there is always a risk buying a used one but that is what I did. HTH

I don't really know but does it matter? If you want to then just use it as a DVD player, when you insert a DVD it should switch to select the DVD as the input or if necessary use the remote to choose the input from HDD to DVD. HTH

So did I get it right: I have to change the hard disk AND I need a firm ware CD to get that working? Without the CD the new recorder cannot read the hard disk?

@@mityme72 I really am not sure. You could try ringing the Panasonic help line in your country, sometimes they are helpful and sometimes not. Or you could try installing it as a second disc in a computer but as it is formatted differently I would be very careful and try and ensure it is read only. As it was a DVD recorder I suggest in future you copy important items to DVDs as archives. When you get the replacement recorder you could try swapping components in to the old one to see if you can get the old one working, what was wrong with the old one? Good luck!

After that, a webpage will show with many words.So, you click on the word: software. And an other webpage will show many model names. You scroll down till you see : dmr-eh55_vup317_firmware.zip. Yo click on this word and a window will appear on your screen. So, you click this downlod windows and it will be saved on the folder: download or whatever you choosed the destination folder. And after that, you go where its downloaded. And you click this zip folder: dmr-eh55_vup317_firmware.zip. and you will see a folder inside. You click that folder right side mouse and you extract that folder in download folder. And after that you click on that folder and you will see this word: PANA_DVD.FRM.. you burn that to a blank cd. And after that. you put this burning cd to dvd recorder and you wait till you see update OK. and after that it will ask you to format your hard drive and you click ok and you,re done you can record on your hard drive. Great video. I've got a friend of my gran asking me to repair their Panasonic DVD player (different model) and I watched this just to get an idea of what to do (I'm a computer technician). Only thing I would point out is you should ALWAYS be grounded. You risk electrocuting yourself or damaging components otherwise. Otherwise, very helpful and informative.
Thank you for this demo. I have the same issue with a broken hard drive in the same recorder. I replaced the drive. However, 'your' firmware seems to be gone. Tried at Panasonic, found one but the recorder tasted it and spit it out again. If it is not too much trouble...

Hmmm.. it should work. Make sure you have it saved on a DVD with the name PANA_DVD.FRM and check it is about 7Mb in size in case it did not download the file fully. HTH

As far as I know the NO FVU message refers to the DVD and should not be affected by the hard drive. Do you get any other message as well at NO FVU e.g. NG DISK?

John Bugeja Hmm.. very odd. The only thing I can think of is that the recorder is not finding the file on your DVD - it is a dvd and not a cd? and it is a dvd it reads eg a DVD-R? Check the file is in the root directory and has the name PANA_DVD.FRM sometimes the file type can get left off. That is the only working file I have. Let me know if that doesn't sort it.
John Bugeja I had another go of downloading the file and notice the loading bar doesn't go all the way to 100% it starts to finalise just short of the end. I wonder if it is a problem with my computer. Did anybody else had this problem?

Burned the firmware on CD-R by windows 7, put it in the panasonic, and update goes on , tested all , all functions runs.

Do you mean you want the files to update the firmware? Have you tried a Panasonic service agent in Poland or the Polish Panasonic helpline? You may need to persuade them to send you a DVD/CD of the drivers. Good luck!

Basically yes, you can use a bigger capacity HD but it will only format it to the original size.

Hi, normally you might get it by asking the Panasonic help line in your country. Otherwise go to the Filedropper site and find Panadvd by putting the address of filedropper in your browser then slash panadvd and download the software then save it to dvd and use as in the video. HTH

Hi, dont worry we will get there in the end. If necessary I can post you a DVD. 7Mb is too big for my email though. I have checked filedropper and it is there. Make sure you enter the address as shown in the annotation at 10.40 (ish) on the video (TH-cam dont let you put web addresses in comments) and then you should get the option to download. Let me know if you have a problem.
mikeuknz Hi, we are trying to download the file also, but it's not working? We can only see a page where we can upload something ourselves. We have the exact same DVD recorder, either the module is broke, or the HD :(

Hi,the method described in this video does not work for the DMR-BWT720.Panasonic specify that you need to replace the hard drive with their genuine spare part,this is because it has data written already on it that will allow the panasonic recorder to recognise it so it can format it.
You can use any other HDD as long as it is no bigger than the one you replace.(if you use a bigger one it will format it to the original size, in the case of the 720 1TB).To use one of these alternative drives you need to get hold of a service disc from panasonic(which I suspect you got which contains the data needed to format it).
Having spent days looking on the internet for a genuine spare or service disc panasonic support tell me they will only supply these to their service agents not the general public.You must have caught the support agent that sent this out to you on a good day.
However good news, vist this site and find in depth instructions that even I could follow to repair your machine,one clever chap or lady.

To remove the hard drive on the 720 it is a little different from the video,to remove the HDD cradle after you have opened the case you will need to remove the front panel (do this by prising off the 2 outside clips the 3 bottom clips and the 1 central clip next to the ribbon cable connecting the front panel,you will also need to remove the said ribbon cable from the PCB)after you have removed the 4 screws retaining the cradle you ill be able to lift it out.

Then it needs to be recorded on to a DVD with the filename PANA_DVD.FRM If it still doesn't work then look through all the earlier comments on this video and see if anyone else had a problem they solved particularly regarding formatting the DVD HTH

I have a Panasonic DMR-EH65 , with a few hundred music video clips on it , that I have edited and saved over the years . and was wondering , if i took out the hard drive, and connected it using the right connector I have for the IDE drive to my PC, will i be able to copy the files onto my computers HDD , and be able to use them , for further editing and sorting out. Hmmm... I am not sure. The format in the DVD player I think is slightly different from the computer format. Have you tried writing them to DVD and loading them in to the computer that way? Sorry that's the best I can advise - good luck!
Hi, in case you haven't found the solution yet, there is a way. It's not difficult at all. It just needs a few tools to extract the files which are stored using the meihdfs filesystem. As far as I know it's a proprietary file system which prevents you from simply accessing the files through your OS (Linux or Windows). That's why you'll need to map the physical drive, extract the files through a tool called "extract_meihdfs". I have the same Australian / new Zealand model my plan is to replace the hard drive with a solid state 160gb hard drive as Panasonic says they won't handle drives bigger than what is installed this involves modding the data plug and power cable. the problem with data read errors on the unit is Panasonic doesn't have a defragmenter option hence why i prefer solid state as data wont degrade.
I think they will handle drives bigger than originally in them but will only format them to the original capacity hence no apparent gain except that another size may be easier to find depending on what is available in your area.
i found this page for the firmware but i confused which version to download i think its the 1 up top but model number is not listed av.jpn.support.panasonic.com/support/global/cs/dvd/download/index.html
If you watch the video you will see that the firmware I downloaded did not work and I had to get it from the Panasonic support line here in NZ. It should be able to be downloaded from the address given in the video. HTH

You could try phoning the Panasonic help line and see if they will send you the firmware. Firmware is often model specific and I can't guarantee that the one I have will work for the GN model. My laptop went down recently and I lost the file. I will try and find a copy (if I have one) and upload it.

Hi. You could try phoning the Panasonic help line in the Netherlands, you may be lucky. Or you could try a different model"s firmware and it may work but may have a fixed limit on the size of HD it recognises. Good luck.
Hi, there is no technical phone support, I send them an e-mail. I use a brand new 160GB (Sata) Harddisk. I believe the harddisk will be formatted, when the right firmware is doing his job. I notice the text NO FVU on the display, so that means there is something wrong with this firmware on the CD. I hope that Panasonic can provide me the right firmware.
@@griekofiel1 The EH55 hard disc is also 160GB so you could try the firmware for that though it is a risk but I think (not sure) that sometimes the last number (53 here) may be for a particular area of the world. If it is not working now then you are not risking too much but it is up to you. However, it may need to be a PATA hard disk. If you look up Panasonic help lines you may find one in another country you could try but they may not operate as normal during the COVID 19 business. Good luck.

I have just loaded this Panadvd file from file dropper for my EH55 panasonic which has a faulty HDD here in Australia It loaded the cd Disc and came up with the same reading NO FVU The disc was burned correctly and finalized on my computer I wonder would Mikeuknz post me a copy of his disc. +Mervyn Roulston The one from the Panasonic web site did not work for me as shown in the video. Check the size of the file you downloaded was about 7Mb. I notice there are two on filedropper now. Have you tried downloading the file you get when you enter www.filedropper.com/panadvd_1 if not give that a go. Have you tried ringing the Panasonic support line in Aussie. Ask them to send you the correct version on DVD, took me 2 rings to get it here in NZ Where in Oz are you?
