My Grandfather was a dispatch rider for the Cheshire Regiment during the The Great War ,and many ,many years ago when I was only little I asked him what he thought the best motorcycle was to which he replied .The one that gets you out of trouble and keeps on going no matter what make it is.
The Ural has the BMW boxer engine. _In 1940, the Soviet Union acquired the design and production techniques for BMW R71 motorcycles and sidecars. The first M-72 model was finished in 1941._
"acquired the design" covers all manner of ills. Accounts vary from straight copying/reverse engineering bikes purchased via Sweden to actually being handed the design details as part of (pre-Barbarosa) German/Soviet co-operation. I admit I originally simply assumed the Russians simply 'stole' the design and factory as part of reparations following the war.

I owned/rode a brand new 1986 Chang Jiang 750 for 12 years. It was one of the best "vintage" vehicles I've owned. I converted it to a BMW R71 by remounting the front fender, painting it black and many other details. I received attention everywhere I went, and told of it's true history. I rarely ever mounted the sidecar.
The Russian bikes were something from another world, I worked as a motorcycle mechanic for an motorcycle shop that sold the Russian Ural, what an experience that was, they are a crude copy of the BMW, to many problems to list with them, Soft metal gearbox, rolled wheel rims and the seam was out of alignment, a step where the two ends meet, the crank rotation drew the oil away from one side starving it of oil and tossing the oil to the other side cylinder that blew smoke from the excess oil, on and on the problems mounted until it was beyond a joke.
The old days of Ural manufacture sound horrific from a 'quality' viewpoint (check out the FortNine vid Ural Motorcycle Review). Things have apparently changed, with most internals outsourced from the same makers who produce Ducati/Triumph etc parts, and Brembo brakes etc ... and a price tag to match.
The sound of the little Triumph took me back to my teens. I keep going back to it ,its beautiful. Yes I know the BMW sounds good but they dont bring back my memories of my Triumph Twins incl. a 1949 3 T which was as boringly reliable as any bike I ever owned inc. 3 BMW's.
Personally, I'd have liked an M20 BSA, mostly because they are so easily fixed in the event of damage. A flat head, side-valve, 500cc classic, with a very rugged bottom end - I've had one, as well as its popular sister the M21, the 600cc version which hauled a sidecar.
I had a '36 BSA 500cc one lunger back in the mid 70s. Original from the British Army. I recognise the side bowl Amyl carburetter and adjustable springer front end. Mine had the 3 crossed rifles cast into the side cover.
Самые долгоживущие мотоциклы. Шедевры того времени. В россии используются и сегодня без какой либо пропаганды. Просто отличная конструцкия которой хватило почти на сто лет использования. Это как Фольцваген жук.

This B.M.W with side car and MG-42 paint like D.A.K units great job much better another one with MG-34 towing 37 mm canon In Africa this motorcycle have drive shift (kardan) because the sand Thanks for sharing this video
You forget about Polish motorcycle: Sokół 1000 1 litre v2 air cooled engine. This motorcycle was produced since 1934 up to 1939 and Yes it was military vehicle and it was used in ww2 ( if you do a 2nd part u can try to find more information about this motorcycle😉)
The German bikes used a drive shaft instead of chain drive, which is much better for the sand and and dirt.Far superior to the other bikes listed here! Reminds me of my 1975 Goldwing 1000
But the production cost/resources used for a beautifully engineered BMW sidecar combination would probably be greater than that of a (far more simply engineered) 4 wheeled car/small truck, which would be far more versatile and useful. Another example of resources being wasted by the side which could least afford to do so. And don't get me started on the Kettenrad : ).
@@jaromirmusil9017 Yes. Based, It's true . But it was an independent project. Not a copy only pattern. This is not the same, and was used in the army under this name. Also, the Indians were a model for HD. In fact, the Indian was the first

The M-72 Was originally made by MMZ until that factory moved to Irbit in late 1941. It became IMZ at the end of the war when plans to relocate the factory back to Moscow were abandoned. M-72 motorcycles were also made in Gorkiy at GMZ until 1949 when that factory was relocated to KMZ in Kiev. The Ural name was first used on M-61 in early 1960s.
The Zündapp KS 750.....A wonderful bike....looks so great..

Why do motorcycles from the 40s look so much more badass than today’s models?
No need speed....just needs strong and have ability to move in war field WW1 / WW2...sorry my bad english
Because you have good taste.
BECAUSE THEY WERE BADASS!!!... GREETINGS FROM GUADALAJARA, JALISCO. MÉXICO 🇲🇽
Quick modern bikes are designed in a wind tunnel .
Old bikes were designed by function which gave designers free rein within cost limits
Потому что тогда мужики жили, а сейчас пидорасы

nice compilation man
I love the rhythmic sound the German B M W makes a class apart in my opinion.
It is just the result from the adjustment of the carbs. An quarter turn to another direction and the engine sounds totally different.

Jim Gibson and
can i do that to my royal enfield bike?
That was one of those Urals wasn't it? Oh I forgot, the Russkie's copied the German flat win deisign.
What a Beautiful Motorcycles
👍🤝🍺😎🤝😁
The BSA sounded like there was no oil in the engine,
FYI, the BMW and Zundap had an aux. shaft to drive the sidecar wheel.
I would love to add a German military outfit to my collection just for taking the dog out in .
Fun & practical.
Thanks for upload 👍
Damn the Zundap and BMW look so fierce and strong, like they belong in the battlefield. Zundap first , BMW Second, Harley third.
Great presentation...thank you!
Great video. Thank you.
Thanks, Bro!

That BSA sounded like a starter that was stuck when at idle.
Great video but needs specs.

Harley Davison also made a motorcycle with an opposed piston engine similar to BMW and the Russian Ural which was a BMW early model!

The 1940hd could be left out of it and replaced with any of the more less cumbersome and versatile war bikes, like Jawa or Royal Enfield.
The Germans love to accessorize with serious gear. I was looking at getting some mirrors on my old ro80 but that towed gun looks the business.
Pretty good for tailgaters too 👍
