We just returned to our home in Colorado from 2 weeks of camping in the Palm Springs area. We had a super super time there!
My wife and I have considered wintering options in Mexico over the last 2 years when I quit working in 5 years-ish. But, after some deep talk, we decided to keep our hunt within the US. Just prior to driving there for our camping trip, my wife sent me a link to a mobile home that was nicely remodeled. So...I filled out the contact info on Zillow; to be contacted by a realtor. This led to that, and after talking to her, we added condos to the consideration. And then more leaded to that, and added some houses to consider. We ended up putting an offer in on a condo that is 3 blocks from the main streets of downtown Palm Springs.
During our hunt, we did go explore Palm Desert too. After exploring there for the day, which also included the El Paseo area, we determined that Palm Springs was more us. Basically, we wanted an area that is more walkable and bikeable. My general comment about Palm Desert is that I felt it was more commerce-ish; by that I mean it is the area that I'd go to do the bulk of my shopping. I'm not a shopper; so I felt overwhelmed by all of the big box stores and shopping traffic. I will continue to explore Palm Desert once we start coming regularly to look for live music in the area. I did not feel like Palm Desert was a place that I'd go walking or biking (I'm not saying you can't do those activities there; just that it is more spread out).
Anyways...we will close in mid May. Our primary function will be to have a place to visit occasionally, as well as defray that cost a bit with some short term rentaling. Ultimately, we'll be wintering here 4 to 6 months at a time.

Palm Springs is definitely more walkable and bike-able. Both are really great cities with pros and cons. That’s exciting that you are closing on a home in May. @@TommyJordanRE Hi Tommy...thank you very much! I am a pilot for a family out of Telluride CO. The wife's mom lives in Palm Desert; so I've been coming there the last 5 years. I LOVE the whole area. My wife has come with on a few of those trips; so she was also turned onto the area.
Yes....though I'll have really easy access to downtown Palm Springs, I do look forward to exploring more of Palm Desert. I love live music; so that will probably dominate my search.
Maybe once we're "settled in", I'll look to met you some day. It would be great to have a local contact that I could pass friends to if they are also interested.

Hi Tommy. I would love to move to Southern California. I like both Orange County near the ocean and Palm Desert next to the mountains. Both areas are beautiful. Why did you decide to move to the Palm Springs area from OC/LA? Also, does the Summertime desert heat in the Coachella Valley bother you ever?
Hey Bob, my wife’s family is all from here and I grew up coming here since I was a kid. I love the beach since I grew up there and it will always be home. When the summer months get rough I usually take the fam to the beach haha. Most of the summer it’s really not terrible with it averaging 105. I just posted a video about living here in the summer so you got to check that out 😂. My goal is to get another home by the beach and have the best of both worlds. OC does have a lot of traffic these days and people. The desert has a lot of pros but like with everything in life there can be cons. Thank you for watching Bob!
@@TommyJordanRE Hi Tommy, thanks for getting back to me. The Palm Springs area is an awsome place. However, there is something magical about being near the ocean in Southern California too. I am a semi-retired real estate broker now living in Northern California (Sacramento area near Folsom). I have never lived in Southern California but would love to move there someday. Like you, I enjoy both the desert and the coast. Since you're still young, you have plenty of time to make it big in real estate. Keep thinking big and you will have both those homes, one in the desert and one on the beach. I will keep watching you because I learn a lot from your videos about the Palm Springs area. Keep up the good work; Best of luck to you in your real estate career!
