I learned on an ASR-10. Funnily enough, I just got my old one back. It's been sitting in storage for 14 years, and I'm actually on the fence, right now, as to whether or not I should try to use it again or sell it. This video reminded me of a few things about my old friend I'd forgotten. 😊
I bought this machine in 1998. Oh my my my the sound this weapon makes is insane!!! The fx unit is actually a version of Ensoniq's DP4 which is legendary all by itself.
The amount of samples you can put on this is insane, its just super expensive if you can find one. Alchemist, Kanye, some of the best have made many hits on this. Much love for sharing. Subscribed ❤
ASR10 is the shit. Do yourself a favor a get an output expander. That way you can route all 8 instrument outputs separately to be able to mix them all individually (6 outs from the expander and 2 from the main L and R outs of the ASR10. Also, get one with a scsi output on it and buy an SD card drive to hook up to scsi instead of using the floppy drive. The SD drive is so much faster and way more reliable than the floppy drive and the floppy disks which will eventually deteriorate and give you a "disk data corrupted" error. I found an SD cars drive online for like $100.
@pittsburghandy3753 I don't remember but that name sound about right. It totally revived my interest in using my ASR-10 again. Before I was always nervous about the disc drive freezing up and losing my work. Now I can use it confidently again. I don't know what it is but beats I do on the ASR-10 sound better and louder than the brand new machine / new technology I bought (even with recording levels the same).

And, I think my initial question was looking at the wrong part of the ASR...you're talking about 8 outputs while I was talking about replacing the floppy drive with an SD card reader, which allows you to create disc images of your CD-ROM audio disks. I see several options from SamplerZone and wasn't sure if anyone else provided that hardware option.
If I ever hit big money I'd promise buy 1 but I have serato sampler and D16 decimort has a ASR-10 preset that I tweaked and can just add what I need in my chain

It doesn't.... But thats what a overdrive AD converter can do.. Follow? Thats high end mastering voodoo.. You can run the AD Hard..... Sure, you dont need to.. thats the advantage of the AD design .Lets say, without overreach, Id sample (at the time) my vintage synths, into a K2, Roland 750 , or an Akai , and they just flavoured it.... I honestly believe thats the misconception of ensoniq samplers... Sure, before the 16+ , they all did.. But every time I sampled on the ASR, it always came back the same..... And from there... if you decide.. its your choice to fk it up.... or start doing that by running the AD hard.... Not many samplers can do that.....

The SP404 is dope. But if You got $800 + Shipping, I have a ASR 10 for u. Expanded sample memory, Modified pitch & Modulator, working Floppy Drive with disks.
So i have an ASR-10 rack mount, and I don't use it. I think some of the buttons are really finicky. They'll work, but you have to struggle with them a little. Do you think it's worth anything to sell? I probably used it maybe 15 times, for a couple samples and i love their violin sound. I have all the original floppies it came with.

Good luck. I got an EPS16 and and asr10 for crazy cheap. Just keep your eyes open. 6 years ago (here in germany) there where a lot for like 300 bucks. Suddenly they went up to 600/700 and now also 2000 or more. Thats crazy.
Haha got mine for $350 equivalent last year here in Africa and next week getting the Rack version for $200 equivalent ppl here don’t value them like that in Europe

Hi. I bought a new ASR-10 back in '93. Later I got a Zip drive for it. I still have the ASR but now I can´t find the drive, and even worse... the floppy disks are missing also. So now I can´t even boot this thing up. Really sad, heh heh. Do you know where I can get a replacement disk or drive with the OS?

Looking at you, DJ Shadow. If you want a cheaper version, the OG EPS is killer. And has a crunchier bitrate/samplerate. No fx tho.
Very well spoken!!!, I actually dump the ASR tracks to the Mpc 4000 and sequence it out that way. It's just easier to sequence via the MPC 4000

If you're just trying to mangle samples with it, maybe get a Mirage? Its super old school and way cheaper than an ASR. Doesn't have a sequencer tho.

if the buttons are finicky, there's a prob. when 100%, everything is sharp. get it into top-notch condition, i'll pay 500$. canadian.

Bought one around 2016 for 350,- € sold it two years later for 550,-€, regretted it, bought another one with scsi for 650,-€ in 2021

Question, can I do everything done on an ASR-10 on a TS-12 when it comes to sampling?
Not quite, mostly yes, but its the way the ASR approaches sampling. Its treats samples like synth. Great for str8 sampling, but also for sound design.
