@@NScaleDystopiaBravo! “Boomer Diorama,” another model railroader here on TH-cam, calls that model-of-a-model a”maquette.” IMHO, a tremendous tool to aid in visualization, and negligible in cost, compared to what is to come! 👍👍
Coolest mini model ever! Looking forward to your build videos as an inspiration. N scale is so great for compressing space, and your trackplan for continuous is genius!
Great! Based on everything you've shared on this channel, this IS the right next move. Congrats! Few modelers are able to take the hard steps to rebuild or to effectively extract the learnings from the prior layouts. Very much looking forward to seeing your new layout take shape!
You brought Aldershot station back!!! That is awesome! Oh man, this layout is going to be incredible! Watching the journey this build will take is going to be delightful. I know it! 😄
Fantastic video totally cool 😎 Do what makes you happy your layout your era just run them trains and enjoy what you do model railroad. We will still be here enjoying the adventures. Hopefully you pick up so new ones alone the way for the ride on the new layout build. Have a great night and week enjoy 🚂🫵TSM
I'm looking forward too enjoying you build this little gem with a hint of bathurst in the background. I'm not Canadian. So looking forward to this project
This video just came up on my suggested feed. I haven't seen any of your content before, but as an N scaler myself (without a space for a layout, currently) I absolutely love what you're doing here. I really appreciate the detail you put into the model of your layout, too. Very nice work, and I look forward to seeing your progress!
The miniature architectural planning/visualization mockup was a magnificent idea that you’ve convinced me to emulate. I suspect that you and I have followed a similar experience path wrt how lessons learned from preceding layouts get incorporated into subsequent builds. My “vows” for my next layout include things like minimal use of powered turnouts, few and subtle grade changes, negligible tunnels/hidden trackage, nothing less than 18” radius curves, and module-based shelf construction. I’m also intrigued with the concept of keeping all wiring top-side (eg - using copper tape etc). For 20 years I’ve wrestled with ideas on how to create Toronto’s Union Station train shed vibe in N scale, and we are definitely like-minded in our CP, GO Transit, CN and Via interests. I admired how you captured this in your previous build, and look forward to seeing the new adventure evolve. Great stuff, man!
Thank you for the thoughtful comment. There definitely is an inner dialogue that pits me against what I think I should be doing and what I want to be doing. The ultimate goal is to be spending the majority of my time doing the things that I enjoy as opposed to spending years doing things that frustrate me - like wiring. I've made peace with myself that I won't be able to build an exact replica of Union station, but the idea that I'll be able to get a station built at all is thrilling!
That’s so cool. N scale has really shrunk over the years. Jk. I love the diorama construction of your future layout. It’s not just blueprints anymore. It’s a mini layout replica of a layout replication of the real thing. Love it.
That is really cool, its inspiring me to get into a more city themed environment on my layout. I also really enjoy the subtle curves the edge of the layout has.
I really like how the tapering wings of the layout point towards the internal angle of the river & bridges. Trains running over & under here will look great. Also I think you have hit on the right balance of track and scenics.
Absolutely love the tiny model! Your first layout was very cool but this one has got me really excited. I love all the thought that has been put into making it atmospheric and picturesque. Looking forward to seeing the build up!
I hope you incorperate the street car near the Union Station side of layout like you had on the previous one. It added great detail and another form of transportation to the layout. Can't wait to see what else you come up with.
You should build it in modules. That way you can continually evolve the layout. Typically it takes 3 to 4 builds to get it right. When you break the build in to modules you can benefit from each module build. It is easier to go back and apply the knowledge to a previous build.

About 15 years ago, when I first starting thinking about having a railroad, my very first thought was... "no matter what era, it will be set on October 31st." You and I are on the same page. 👻 There are so many opportunities for intriguing storytelling on that specific date that exist on very few other dates. Maybe Christmas qualifies, though certainly not my thing. Perhaps 4th of July for the summer-oriented American folks, but for me, Halloween takes the cake. It has a beautiful look with the autumn colors, it has a spooky vibe, it has kids walking around in their n-scale costumes, it has houses decorated with ghosts, bats, and spiders; it has an eerie soundtrack, it has backyard bonfires with people wearing hoodies. No other date compares. I honestly do not understand vaguely summer layouts when Oct. 31 exists. :D
We share the same thinking. I grew up in southwestern, Ontario, Canada and this area is world renowned for fall colours. Halloween was a big deal to me as a kid, I still decorate the house and dress up every year, and I collect horror memorabilia to decorate my office. It seems only fair that the layout also reference Halloween!
Wow... what an interesting concept. I love your model plan as well... I'm a Canadian modeller too and love my CN, GO Metrolinx and VIA trains, but I had a thought - if you ever wanted to, you could run the occasional Amtrak train as well. I booked a VIA train once from Union Stn to Aldershot and was surprised when I got on and it was actually an Amtrak train. Just a thought. Love your design and I'm excited to see how it plays out. Thanks for sharing
That was a pretty cool visualisation - you could almost make an infinite loop - maybe one of your buildings can house the mock-up as its own layout - heck, maybe we are all models for someone else's layout! 😜😜
Your model from a future model looks great! I like your combination of fright- and passengers-trains. Exciting about to see what's comes next. Good luck for your restart and best wishes from Berlin, Germany! 🎃
The maquette is a great idea ! What scale did you use ? Do you have architectural design experience ? Your maquette looks like what an architect or designer might build while working on a new design -- helpful in tweaking the final design. I got my college degree in interior design (class of 1990) and we built and used mock-ups/maquettes/models to solve problems and to better visualise the 3-d space -- this was long before it was common-place to use computers to produce a digital 3-D version of the design.
Very interesting concept, i'm looking forward to seeing how this develops. Am planning something similar myself, although more of a doomer-esque/run down setting rather than halloween since halloween is not really a thing around here. Also, can anyone identify the musc in the background?
I really love the graphic look of the plan! I want to build my own mock up model for my upcoming layout. Did you use a different program to do so? It looks like the graphis from Model Railroader, not Scarm or Anyrail.
I designed the track work in scarm. But you're right, I used another program to make the drawing - Adobe illustrator. I wanted my layout plan to look just like the drawings I used to pine over in model railroader magazine.
hey dude, really good video and looks like it'll be a killer layout I've got a little bit of feedback on the video itself, I was watching with headphones on and could hear "mouth noise", I don't know how you're recording the VO but your mic might be a bit too close to your face.
Sorry, I’m not a native speaker, therefore I’ve misst perhaps some implications. Will there be The furthermore the zombie theme? Halloween can be everything and I really don’t know what it should imply.
Wait--Peco 80 turnouts? Don't. Please don't. Believe it or not, things run much better on Peco 55 turnouts, which don't have those God-awful wide flangeways that the Code 80 turnouts do. (If you don't shim out the guardrails with styrene strip, trains want to pick Code 80 switches all the time.) You won't have to do all that shimming to mate them up with Code 55 flex, either. I'm looking forward to seeing the new layout go together! Keep up the good work!
Thanks for the advice - I've already started the shimming. Local club members have had a lot of success with the shimmed turnouts. We shall see how things progress,
I love that you did a small model to visualize how the layout would look and function. It’s very architectural.

I think you put more effort and expertise into that model of a model than I did into my first and only (so far) layout.

Note the expression of sheer mass as that train moves at 1min 30. That is a good layout.
