I hate the realism in the new cartoons like Pixar's and that's why I don't watch them and I keep re-watching the old Disney films even now, at age of 23.
I've always considered 'All Dogs Go To Heaven' and 'Anastasia' two of my top 3 animated films ever (along with 'Sleeping Beauty') and not until today did I found out they were both made by you. That makes me a huge fan of yours, Mr. Bluth, without even realising it. Thank you for making my childhood and for staying true to the classic values!

Don Bluth, you sir are amazing. I really REALLY hope that you get your Drqgon's Lair movie (and maybe even more) made, even if it is a straight to dvd release :D

What Don is talking about when he says don't try and recreate what you see in the real world That reminds me of video games and how photo realistic graphics are boring and I agree I don't want video game graphics to look "real" I love them to have a interesting art style and art direction.

I hope traditional animation doesn’t die out I love that medium of animation and it inspires me with my projects. You’re caricature version of that pose is a lot more fluid then the poster that pose in the poster look too stiff.
And thank you for your tips.

The great thing about hand-drawn animation is you can get away with things that are limited to reality, like physics and motion, but at the same time the quality has to be good enough to be believable. So there's this constant balance the artist needs to struggle with.

I love the way the work's titled, since one of my favourite actors is named Dirk: Dirk Bogarde!
And has anyone thought Mr. Bluth's hand reminds me of Vincent Price in HOUSE OF WAX?

I think I'll go out and people watch with my sketchbook now. In college, it was all about copying it perfectly. I never thought about exaggerating things. That's why all my characters are so stiff.

He's right, it's the stress on the realism that's killing the point of what film animation should be. Now I'm not against it, but CGI can be great when it's used for Live-action film special effects but it shouldn't entirely substitue tradtional animation.
I'm working alongside my brother and a few others. We have high hopes to restore the traditional 2-D animation medium in the near future and we won't rest until we know we've won the battle!

I love the point about realism. I say with any product of the imagination, it's not about realism it is about being convincing and believable. Mrs. Brisby doesn't look even remotely like a "real" mouse, but she is a convincing and believable mouse character.
I normally make that point regarding science fiction. Not realistic, believable.

I agree, for me, it feels like there's enough realism in the world already. Plus I think like video games, Animation is a great way to view metaphors, different ways of thinking and broadening our horizons in a safe risk-free environment.

@trollheimer Now I can tell why some folks tend to be extremely paranoid about others being damned to Hell in their afterlives after noticing some work being done with too much sloth and not enough diligence.

dont worry don there is a happy comprimise of hand drawn animation and animation done on the computer. its called a graphics tablet. you that you can hand draw the pictures straight on the the monitor and not waste paper

  • @HuskyLemur

you,re right don! and I agree that without hand-drawn animation some films and most likely storyboards these days than 2D and 3D would never be in balance or maybe 3D animation would never exist at all if thats what you had in mind and I too wish to make disneys first anime one day even if that doing best at storyboarding right?!

  • @Laroling

@Jshaw71 it's the other way around. cgi is much easier once you know its programmes. Programmers already put in the codes for you, and you don't need to recreate every frame, or you don't need time expensive builds of animatronics and analog stuff. Too bad though. Certain 'moods' are ruined by the cgi realism, and the art of design and stylization to set up a mood get lost. However some cgi artists are working hard getting the 'oomph', handdrawn is still the ultimate core and will be forever.

Even when people take photos nowadays they change them, change the lighting ect with photoshop and photomanipulation. So in actually realistic is unpopular. I'm not talking about nature magazines and the like, obviously. Just a thought.

  • @Jshaw71

Thanks for the upload, and your thoughts on this topic, I doubt very seriously that cell animation well be abonaded, but even if it is, there are skill people that can simply pick up a piece of paper and create something, instead of having to get a program that costs 100's of dollars, that imo, will be the reason why cell animation will never die out, because it can be created much easier than with cgi... but that's me

you,re right don! and without hand-drawn animation than maybe 2D and 3D animation would never be in balance or maybe CGI would never exist without 2D inspiration at all which is why I would like to make disneys first anime one day even if I do best at comic strips and story boarding even though people draw at hand-drawn story boards these days which is why I would like to meet you in person or maybe online one day or my name isn,t BLAKE A. ROTEN! so uh email me at gmail if you like too?

  • @TaylorZanderFrancis

My problem with traditional animation, even though I prefer it and it's the best way to make cartoon films, is that no one can do it today without being called a Disney rip-off. If one company makes a traditionally hand drawn animated film, everyone will look at it and say it's ripping off Disney. That's why many people overlooked Anastasia as a Disney rip-off, even though it has nothing to do with the Disney style. I think it will live on, but only Disney will be "allowed" to do it. Shame.
