Reminder that during the 18th and 19th century wars, scots were regarded as genuninely scary because of how they were ready to fight in melee and make things messy, unlike most soldiers at the time
And I'm pretty sure a similar reputation in ww1, although it led to quite high casualty rates as they kept going over the top
Meh 18th century was still a time melee combat seen a lot of use. Matter of facts it changed only shortly after the Napoleonic period so early 19th. Hence Napoleon’s army used Polish Ulhans and French lancers that while equipped in pistols were chiefly shock cavalry. Russians used sabre wielding cossacks until WW2 under same pistol+sword principle.
