It started with a little 3-part thing I made in like 5th grade that's like 7 to 10 minutes total, but then in high school I went back to it and greatly expanded upon it afterward, especially after taking AP Music Theory and applying what I learned there, adding a lot more original stuff that's still similar-sounding. I live in southern Ohio, right across the river from Kentucky. I grew up with bluegrass and Americana (for lack of a better term) music my whole life. I've seen lots of strange instruments and own a few myself, but I've never seen nor heard of the guitarophone. I NEED MORE OF THIS
I have a 1904 horner accordion that was made for the st. Louis world fair. Unfortunately some of the keys do nothing. This video inspired me to take another look at it
Okay, that first instrument makes me think of several things: one, an upright player piano; two, the soundtrack of silent movies, and three a music box.
I really appreciate you taking the time to show us your collection of antique instruments. I just finished a 12 hour shift and my 4 hour school day and this is such a breath of fresh air. I’ve played the alto and tenor Saxophone for 13 years (retired from competition play) and hearing you joyfully strum reminds me of the countless hours I spent experimenting with melodies. Thank you so much 💛
Thank you for this. With so much strident commentary in/on the games industry, it's refreshing to have someone make their points in a calm, collected manner. Especially when using something beautiful to do so.
Felt like I was listening to a Gun Smoke radio drama... Really interesting sounds. I have a small little lap harp and I have been trying to develop finger technique for it. Getting unusual instruments from the swap meet and getting them work, figuring them out are great ways to get your creative juices flowing. Looking forward to the documentary. And can't agree more, long term storage, supporting independent creators, personally I favor GOG over steam because I don't want someone to pull the plug on what I consider my property. But yes, right to repair, local parts, all of these things make the difference between a future and a footnote. There are many ghost towns from that era. It's easy to ignore the fact that we have short lived drives, with more data than we can print and few alternatives regarding long term life. All that's digital can easily be lost or be an acquisition away from Cease and Desist oblivion, like Amazon deleting 1984 from people's Kindle devices without notice. I won't be happy if I don't own anything, my person included.
It would be fascinating to have these instruments utilized for a full soundtrack for a fantasy western-ish game of sorts. I don't know why but I had Wild Arms come to mind as I was listening to some of this.
Those were some nice musical instruments. There are quite a few people on youtube that record both the preservation procedures and history of historical pieces. It is a bit satisfying seeing something old and worn being brought back to its former glory.
Can we just appreciate that this banjo building, apple ripping, Instrument restauring, game developing, TH-cam successor that just broke the broken wokys on walking by is just on the way to become more legend then doom guy? 8:00 Ach ja, und schöne Grüße aus Bayern 🙋
the 'Variable Zither' wowed me, putting me in mind of a harpsichord but with a warmer, less brittle tone the 'Guitarophone' gave me pleasant chills, that reverberation reminding me of the opening theme to Silent Hill - and i really look forward to when it's fully restored and the 'Table Violin' is delightful, beautifully complimenting the other instruments - thanks for sharing these wonderful pieces
What a clever point! They are so unsurprisingly typical you can't even think about them longer than OMG a table violin? Gives some mysterious pawn shop vibes. How do you find them? Is that just a random encounter and "why not?" attitude, or is it an old hobby?
I'm 100% behind you on not wanting to talk about all the nonsense. There's already too much negativity in the world. If a person or company displays abject disrespect, I take note of it and just put them on my mental block list. I starve them of my attention and mindshare. I would much rather hear people talk about things they enjoy than hear people complain non stop. Despite the problems in the world, there are still many things to enjoy. I have music I enjoy listening to. Books I enjoy reading. Films and shows I enjoy watching. And video games I enjoy playing. Most of them are not modern, but I still enjoy them. I just recently discovered synthwave music and I am loving it. Already bought about a dozen albums off of bandcamp from these indie groups. I also started building model kits a couple years ago and it's so much fun. I really wish people would spend more time on things they enjoy rather than pn things they seemingly hate. Focusing on the negative is just exhausting.
Wow, model kits sounds like a great hobby. I haven't done that yet but I will try it in the future. What sort of models do you like to build? You know what is uniquely relaxing? Sitting outside on a sunny day and reading a book, or watching the wind blow through the trees as you enjoy a coffee.
@@sungrandstudios Gundam models are probably the most beginner friendly. I'd suggest Entry Grade kits. They are super cheap (less than $10US), easy to build and of surprisingly high quality. And you can go from there if you enjoy building, because a whole world of creativity opens up if you get into the hobby. It's a great hobby in an era when people have so little attention span. I can get absorbed for hours working on my customization projects. And it satisfies the need for tactile sensation in a world of digital entertainment where only your eyes and ears get attention. Working on something tangible with your hands I find is very important.

Plus, there are literally thousands of kits to choose from. I really enjoy it because it's a hobby that combines collecting with creativity and satisfies the need to hold something real and tactile in my hands. It's probably not for everyone, but I think creative people who like to work with their hands would enjoy building models.

This is why I like this channel. There's dozens of other channels that just grift and make 10 videos on concord or dragon age saying the same thing. It's important to not let yourself get consumed with hate.
I had the chance once to visit the Musical Instrument Museum in Phoenix, Arizona and it really amazed me what they had in there. If you ever have the chance to visit it I'm sure you'll get a kick out of it :)
Pretty cool. I'm configuring a build from a Beretta 92x into Jill Valentine's Raccoon City Police Dept S.T.A.R.S. Kendō Custom M92X Samurai Edge Service pistol. Its been fun, practically buying a 92x twice. Related to gaming, not to the 2020s woke crap. I've wanted Jill Valentine's Samurai Edge since 1999. However her base pistol is a Beretta 92FS into M92F Samurai Edge in Resident Evil & Resident Evil³ Nemesis PS1 Games. I did 92x because it's simply a pistol more to my liking over 92FS.
fun fact, zither comes from greek kitara (kithara) and that is literally the origin of the word guitar. as everyone can see from playing it, variable zither is made to simplify learning to play, as making chords is a dexterity intensive while on variable zither you need to focus on plucking specific strings more then on chords. i actually saw you unbox that guitarophone on mountain home channel. please, do restore it. with a proper vocal escort, that should be a true one-man band instrument. something a traveling bard would carry so i could use specifics of mechanics and restoration for some rpg research. one of my regular players likes to play a bard. she loves complex instruments.
They really messed it up. Unity imploded and every other game engine received more funding. Godot was receiving more funding and support than ever before, and they STILL fumbled it! It's nuts!
I want to say how much I appreciate your gentle redirection of people's attention away from these toxic wastes of time into more useful and educational things. Riding on the rage wheel all the time is such useless waste of mental energy that could be used to improve our skills and perspectives.
It is really interesting how you can tell that "wild west" music was vocals / poetry first & then the music was written to match, vs modern music being about finding words to match a catchy beat.
@@sungrandstudiosthis. You go out and hunt for antique instruments, restore them, then sell them or keep them in your collection. That sounds like such a cozy game.
There aren't many "content creators" like yourself these days. I put "content creators" in quotations, because I feel the people that make this type of content don't want to be creators (And you said yourself that you don't want to be a youtube/content creator). Rather they and you seem to be more appreciators of good will/thought and actual culture. Very refreshing and needed.
Fantastic as always. Given that there's so few of them, how hard would it be to duplicate them? Like making one from the ground up? Now I'm dying to know why some of those got purged from History, what are the reasons? I understand why some ideologies would like certain books removed, but why instruments.
That isn't even an uncommon occurrence. Happend in Europe over the course of it's history multiple times. The reasons are badly documented tho. The church and or the aristocraty where usually involved.
@mendelovitch I have fractional knowledge of the european history of music instruments, but I don't know anything about the one in America. Music and culture often share a deep bond. A ban on instruments and/or songs seems to indicate an effort For cultural change.
Yes. The digital space has become boring. Let's go ride motorbikes, go to the gym, practice MMA, go camping, go hunting, play music, build things, fix things, grow things, learn things, hangout with friends and family... the list goes on and on. I too am tired of these people who offer nothing of value. It's time to start disconnecting from the digital space and reconnecting with my community and the people around me. This dude has the right idea I think.
Those forgotten instruments are pretty neat. There was actual “soul” put into making these instruments sing again. Perhaps with a similar resolve, we can see the passion for the art in modern entertainment return.
Love the rare instruments - it must be a fun hobby to restore them. I like how you do your videos in two segments and the intro segment is short commentary and moving on to the more interesting stuff.
It's great the way you brought the entire conversation full circle. Also, these instruments blow my mind with how anyone could have invented these. Such unique yet precise sounds. And seeing you just pick them up and play like "any old guitar" is amazing.
these songs sounded really natural at 1.5 or 2x speed. what crazy instruments though. went together really well. hope you get the guitarophone working.
It's always fun watching people talk passionately about something they care about. I'm not into musical instruments but enjoy you sharing them and explaining. I have a friend I met through TH-cam and he loves Poetry. Again, I'm not big into it myself but I enjoy watching him share and explain 🙂
Wasn't expecting to have to break out my music listening headphones for the video. Beautiful sounds. As for the internet discourse in general, it's more and more like two dogs barking at eachother from across the fence. In most cases if you remove the obstacle the noise stops immediately.
Very nice instruments that you have there. Best feature besides their sound - they do not need any amps, you can play everwhere. Regarding the last part of this video. In Germany we have a saying „Wo Musik ist, lass dich nieder. Böse Menschen keinen keine Lieder.“ (Stay a while where there is music, evil people do not know any songs.). Therefore, if there are new entries to your collection, please show them.
Thank you! That is wonderful. I have saved your message and saying. I do indeed have other German zithers which I use in my soundtracks so I will share them in the future too.

Nice observations. It jist sounds old timey, right?
Thank you for sharing. I remember playing some intrument in elementary school that looked like these displayed.
I am here for the antiques - gaming news can shove off.
Thank you so much 💛
I’m a game designer / director as my job but I’m a musician as my passion and I LOVE seeing these antiques and your approach to ost creation. Cheers!
Thank you for this. With so much strident commentary in/on the games industry, it's refreshing to have someone make their points in a calm, collected manner. Especially when using something beautiful to do so.
lmao. The video title/thumbnail is one of the greatest things I've ever seen on YT.
Top-tier trolling here. Absolute masterclass. I am in awe.
My favorite instrument is the Drehleier.
The continuous tones are so captivating.
I love the history and idea behind the table violin, it's so sick!
"Boy howdy, that was pretty interesting, wasn't it?"
I would like a fagott, but now I’m know collect action figures and art.
3.5 years ago I started my journey to become a 3d artist and this is exactly the type of game developer boss I would always want
I think its great that you are keeping these instruments alive, they all so sound so unique!
I swear I've heard that first instrument somewhere else before but I just can't place it
Can we just appreciate that this banjo building, apple ripping, Instrument restauring, game developing, TH-cam successor that just broke the broken wokys on walking by is just on the way to become more legend then doom guy?
8:00 Ach ja, und schöne Grüße aus Bayern 🙋
I've never seen an instruments like these before felt like I just learned something new today🤔
the 'Variable Zither' wowed me, putting me in mind of a harpsichord but with a warmer, less brittle tone
the 'Guitarophone' gave me pleasant chills, that reverberation reminding me of the opening theme to Silent Hill - and i really look forward to when it's fully restored
and the 'Table Violin' is delightful, beautifully complimenting the other instruments - thanks for sharing these wonderful pieces
@@sungrandstudios I mostly build Gundam kits, but I also build mecha kits from other companies. I would suggest starting with Bandai Entey Grade kits. They are super cheap (less than $10US) easy to build and of surprisingly good quality.
Once you get into the hobby, a whole world of creativity opens up. Plus, there are literally thousands of kits to choose from.
I really enjoy it because it's a hobby that combines collecting with creativity and satisfies the need to hold something real and tactile in my hands. It's probably not for everyone, but I think creative people who like to work with their hands would enjoy building models.

My favourite instrument out of this bunch was the one that came 100 years before Re2 & Oot
As a string player and a fellow Hartford fan, I just want to chill and talk music with you over beers. Came for the video games but I'm staying for everything else.
That's a killer tie, love your antiques man.
Edit: By the way I like what you actually DO in your videos, a pity most of the people is directed to won't get it.
Damn he called it a creature lmfao good stuff brother.
10:57 It's brilliant how you've crafted these videos to tie it into the game industry issues in your own unique way while covering other things you enjoy. It's great stuff man... Love the antique instruments btw.
Thank you for showing what taking the high road looks like - and for all the lovely music.
I love how random this channel is. "Lets not talk about the boring people, here is some cool stuff I have" 🤣
Very refreshing indeed.
Beautiful sounds, i'd like to hear them live. Great video, thank you!
fun fact, zither comes from greek kitara (kithara) and that is literally the origin of the word guitar.
as everyone can see from playing it, variable zither is made to simplify learning to play, as making chords is a dexterity intensive while on variable zither you need to focus on plucking specific strings more then on chords.
i actually saw you unbox that guitarophone on mountain home channel. please, do restore it. with a proper vocal escort, that should be a true one-man band instrument. something a traveling bard would carry so i could use specifics of mechanics and restoration for some rpg research. one of my regular players likes to play a bard. she loves complex instruments.
So sad about Godot. Was about to get into it.
For real. They were the up and coming platform, and then they proved themselves not to be a serious business. Shame.
They really messed it up. Unity imploded and every other game engine received more funding. Godot was receiving more funding and support than ever before, and they STILL fumbled it! It's nuts!
It's open source, it'll be forked and it'll be fine. Just don't support them monetarily.
@@SunnydayRay1 The first one i've read about is Redot
My boys Godot is open source and a new fork of it Redot was just launched. And they are focused on just being a good engine.
That is a very interesting observation! You can hear the values and simpler philosophies in the music of that era.
I'd play a game where you refurbish antique instruments
That sounds like a fun concept for a game!
LUTHIER SIMULATOR 2024
@@sungrandstudiosthis. You go out and hunt for antique instruments, restore them, then sell them or keep them in your collection. That sounds like such a cozy game.
There aren't many "content creators" like yourself these days. I put "content creators" in quotations, because I feel the people that make this type of content don't want to be creators (And you said yourself that you don't want to be a youtube/content creator). Rather they and you seem to be more appreciators of good will/thought and actual culture. Very refreshing and needed.
I respect the way you worded and communicate that. There's so much about our culture and history that is beautiful and worth exploring.
the best content creators are not content creators, best way i can put it, learned that over the years for sure.
Fantastic as always.
Given that there's so few of them, how hard would it be to duplicate them? Like making one from the ground up?
Now I'm dying to know why some of those got purged from History, what are the reasons?
I understand why some ideologies would like certain books removed, but why instruments.
Looked it up. Can't find anything about it.
That isn't even an uncommon occurrence. Happend in Europe over the course of it's history multiple times.
The reasons are badly documented tho. The church and or the aristocraty where usually involved.
@@SvenHeidemann-uo2yl This is so strange. I need more information! Specifically the purging of these American 19th century musical instruments.
@mendelovitch
I have fractional knowledge of the european history of music instruments, but I don't know anything about the one in America.
Oh my. You're right! That is an incredible sound! Don't know how to spell the name of it, but the one around 5:20.
I like how you focus in more cool stuffs than usual debate stuffs
These instruments are so interesting! I played violin back in high school, and now to want to get back into practice. Great content, as usual!
7:25 if you close your eyes for five seconds its like loading rdr2 on an ssd.
Also the eagle on the guitarophone goes hard.
I love that mug! Great for the fall vibes. Thank you for this video Mr President 🙏
Tbh I find antiques A LOT MORE INTERESTING than whatever that's going on with those 2-legged lifeless noise-makers
I love when you share the instruments history with us and play them. Thank you for sharing. Safe Journeys !
Zithers have such a pretty, gentle sound.
I generally think antiques are garbage, but I do agree with your statement.
Finally an interesting topic! They tried some intriguing zither designs around 1900. :)
You're right. The vocal crowd are boring. You're way more interesting. A jack of all trades.
“They’re too boring to talk about” - One of the most multifaceted people of this century, probably.
Beautiful instruments and their play. The inventors and craftsmen who made them would be glowing with pride and joy to see you play them.
Wasn't expecting to have to break out my music listening headphones for the video. Beautiful sounds.
As for the internet discourse in general, it's more and more like two dogs barking at eachother from across the fence. In most cases if you remove the obstacle the noise stops immediately.
In Chinese the saying is: the half-filled vinegar is the loudest;半瓶醋響叮噹。
Absolutely love this guy, I’m so happy I found you from Asmon’s channel
Very nice instruments that you have there. Best feature besides their sound - they do not need any amps, you can play everwhere. Regarding the last part of this video. In Germany we have a saying „Wo Musik ist, lass dich nieder. Böse Menschen keinen keine Lieder.“ (Stay a while where there is music, evil people do not know any songs.). Therefore, if there are new entries to your collection, please show them.
Thank you! That is wonderful. I have saved your message and saying. I do indeed have other German zithers which I use in my soundtracks so I will share them in the future too.
