Dziwnów (hist. Dyuennow, Dievenau, German Dievenow - a town in north-western Poland, on the Baltic Sea, in the West Pomeranian Voivodeship, in the Kamień district, the seat of the Dziwnów urban-rural commune on the road no. 102. A holiday resort with a summer seaside resort and seaport.
Dziwnów is located in the central part of the coast of the province. Zachodniopomorskie, in the northern part of the Kamień County. The city is located on the Baltic Sea, at the mouth of the Dziwna Strait to the sea. From the south, the city lies on the Kamień Lagoon and the Wrzosowska Bay, which are part of the Dziwna River. The town is located on the Szczecin Coast, the western part on the Międzywodzki Peninsula on the Wolin Island, and the eastern part on the spit belonging to the Trzebiatowskie Coast mesoregion.
Dziwnów is a very old fishing village, in 1170 ships of the Danish king Waldemar the Great tried to flee through the mouth of the Dziwna, unfortunately they ended up in the shallows and had to turn back. At that time, they fought a battle with the Pomeranian fleet near the village of Połchowo, on the shore of the island of Gardzka Kępa. Dziwnów was mentioned for the first time in a document from 1243.
In the early Middle Ages, an important trade route connecting the Zalew Szczeciński with the Baltic Sea led through Dziwnów. In the 13th century, Dziwna became sandy and lost its commercial importance. In the years 1820-30 the first patients started arriving in Dziwnów, which initiated the development of the town as a seaside resort.
From 1823, Dziwnów was known as a health resort. The discovery of brine springs in 1896 contributed to the construction of brine and mud baths. The health resort operated in Dziwnów for a short time after World War II. Currently, the brines are not exploited.
At the beginning of the 1950s, there was 250 Military Hospital for sick and wounded partisans - Greek communists fighting in the Greek civil war, who had to emigrate from their homeland after the defeat of the communist resistance movement. The hospital was supervised by the Board of the Second General Staff of the Polish Army. In the years 1958-1963, the breakwaters were rebuilt to their current size: the eastern one is 351 meters long, and the western one - 342 meters.
In 1999, Dziwnów took third place in the plebiscite for "The most popular tourist destination" organized by the weekly "Sport and Tourism" under the patronage of the chancellery of the President of the Republic of Poland. Dziwnów Dolny, Dziwnów Górny and Dziwna merged into one town, which was granted municipal rights on January 1, 2004 .
Dziwnów has a clean, sandy and guarded beach, separated from the city by a strip of dunes. In summer, children can enjoy the water slide and inflatable jumping structures. Wooden breakwaters protrude from the sea, on which seagulls often land. In summer, you can also take a ride on a banana or a wheel pulled by a motorboat.
The greatest advantage of the Dziwnów Commune is its almost eighteen kilometers of wide, sandy and clean beaches. In 2013, after fulfilling many complicated procedures, Dziwnów, Dziwnówek and Międzywodzie received the "Blue Flag" certificate, which proves the highest standard of the bathing areas.
An additional, fantastic beach attraction is the walking and viewing promenade, which stretches along the dunes of the wide sandy beach. It's the perfect place for walkers. While relaxing, you can enjoy the beautiful views, the sunset. In the meantime, you can sit on the benches that have been installed along the promenade.
The year-round marina at the fishing port can accommodate 60 vessels with a maximum length of 12 m. The shape of the port is interesting, but also the location on the very important sailing route Świnoujście - Kołobrzeg. The entrance to the port is located on the side of the Dziwna strait, but before the drawbridge, which facilitates easy communication with the sea.
The fishing port is situated on a long spit, between the Dziwna Strait and the Baltic coast and the Kamieński Lagoon. Within the administrative boundaries of the port there is an aquarium with an area of 0.5025 km². The movement of ships through the strait is related to the passage over the drawbridge. Two banks of the Dziwna River are joined by a road bridge connected to the provincial road No. 102, located 350 m east of the Winter Basin.
