Hauschka at NPR: Improvisation

- Listening to a piece by Hauschka can be deceiving: What sounds like an ensemble of musicians and instruments is just one man, performing at one piano. His real name is Volker Bertelmann, and he hails from Dusseldorf, Germany, where he works with his "prepared piano." He wrests disruptive sounds from the instrument's 88 keys by outfitting the strings or mallets with objects such as ping-pong balls, aluminum foil and leather. His new album is titled Foreign Landscapes, and he recently visited NPR's studios to demonstrate his craft.

The use of the ebows is fucking fantastic
Jordan Romanacce was exactly right (see comments below) the : " piano already has a range and vastness of color and volume that is unsurpassed by any other solo instrument. Prepared piano only further unfolds its diversity. Awesome."
I love prepared piano! I hope more people keep innovating with objects, nails, and all of the unique things one can use to manipulate, or as some would say instead coax he sound out of a piano. Thanks for sharing!
I'm completely mesmerized. thank you
@nprmusic ... Thank you so much for all of the wonderful videos. This definitly deserves many more views than it has recieved. You are really promoting some good things. Thank you.
Thank you Wimp for helping me find such beautiful music.
This is great...and it's nice to hear something melodic from a prepared piano for once. I think the concept has real mainstream classical potential once people realize it doesn't have to play some atonal catharsis piece (not that there's anything wrong with that...I love John Cage :-) )
I hear that in movie soundtracks all the time. Once you know how prepared piano sounds
Cody Fox me too. i like john cage
Atonal catharsis... brilliant :D
Sort of proves my theory that no one really likes that BS except people who want everyone to know how artsy they are. If you want percussion with your piano then get someone to play percussion, don't just stick nails and rubber bands into a perfectly good piano.
This song is so beautiful it almost brought me to tears. Thank you.
beautiful, beautiful!
realmente brilhante, o cara de forma "simples" consegue reproduzir os mais diversos sons.
I just fell huge nostalgia hearing it
Thank you so much!

I've listened to him for while and never knew it was one dude... Or that it could all be done at once..... I'm absolutely blown away. This is incredible.
Wow! Now that is experimental. This is wicked.
Brilliant! Through simple but great little ideas he transforms his instrument into a musically multi-textural performance tool that sounds totally complete on its own :D Great stuff
it's beautiful music...
What are those devices he’s using at the beginning that play the 2 drone notes? Wonderful ideas here
OF course,,, amazing... I saw him Live at Scubas in Chicago!
Incredible
very special!
SO SICK
That's really nice
Yes performed by a performer/composer that prepares his piano in a manner worthy of a great orchestrator; I think somewhere Ravel is smiling. ;)
This is actually.......really good........
just saw Hauschka perform last night at the Piano City Milano, Italia, outdoor main stage in via Palestro 16... absolutely stunning... the weather taunted with thunder and lightening dancing across heavy gray skies... when the sounds of the ping-pongs on the strings gave the listeners a sensation of rain.... a beautiful experience... thank you!
amazing
those are the lights from the Ebows and an ebow it's a device specially for guitar, you put it on the guitar string, play a note and it will emit a continuous sound even if you change the note.

``Ebow`` - they generate a electromagnetic field that causes strings to resonate.

Violette Betancourt Ebow
Some people are just gifted..... He is one of them!!!!!
this is absolutely beautiful
what are the black things he positions in the beginning of the video? They have a blue light facing down. They're making the strings vibrate right?
Its really amazing what people do with pianos, including me.
this is so beautiful :D
Just beautiful.
this floored me....I couldn't stop listening.
He and Zoe Keating are such an inspiration to me. They are both innovative and technical, whilst maintaining heavy emotion.

He's the son of John Cage with his prepared pianos.
What are those purple flashlight things at the beginning and end?
It's an Ebow, a battery powered device used to vibrate a string, normally used on electric guitars.
@OneManAndHisToaster
I wonder what would you say about Esbjörn Svensson Trio If this German level is epic?
