Plus Hamilton's team owner was once Dale's crew chief that won 2 championships. His last 2 championships in fact, Andy Petree plus 2001 was the only year he won as a owner with Joe Nemecheck winning the fall Rockingham race.
This was basically the lone best moment Steve had in 2001. (At least in the Cup Series) This was months before his season ending Xfinity Series crash that September.
Park just outclassed Labonte in this one. A race like this is a rare commodity these days. Glad the Rock reopens in April. When Bobby made his last ditch effort, he used his breaks in turn 3 and Steve didn't, he backed out of the gas some and he bet everything that car had that it would stick through the corner and he would keep the lead. He said that is what he did in victory lane.
X-Cup. It is a new race series that fields former NASCAR cars and trucks. The rule for the cars/trucks is pretty straight forward. If the shell of the vehical does not look like it did when you bought it from the NASCAR team, you are disqualified. If we can't tell by looking at it that you are cheating, you're not cheating as far as we are concerned. xcupseries.com/ It will host the last race for the Super Cup Stock Car series every year. The SCSCS requires Monte Carlo's from 1999-2006. 1999-2005 Ford Taurus, 2006-2012 Fusion. 1999-06 Pontiac Grand prix.1999-2004 Dodge Intrepid, 2005-2012 Charger and 2014 Ford/ Chevrolet.
As you know, it didn't reopen. XCUP fell apart and Super Cup couldn't run on a closed race track. The Rock isn't done yet. It will be on the Cup schedule next year just watch, yeah I know the schedule is out but check back in on NASCAR.com in late August for a supprise.
Steve was a true wheelman. Keeping his foot on the gas and getting loose, yet not wrecking and taking Labonte out in the process. Now that's something you don't see very much today.
on top of Rickey Craven's first win at Martinsville, and the next restrictor plate race after this at Talledega went caution free. That alone is amazing because everyone was so nervous with that being the first restrictor plate race after SR's passing.
1. NASCAR (citing contract regulations at the time) would not allow FOX to air the postponed race on it's affiliates. It would be aired the following day on FX instead as many of you may know. 2. When we had cable in our area, We did not have FX at the time this race aired. However, that issue would be resolved three months later.
one of the best wins of 2001, no question...add it on there with Dale Jr's Pepsi 400, Harvick's Cracker Barrel 500 win, and Bill Elliott's first win since 1994 2001 was quite am emotional season.
If this was in 2012 Nascar would have thrown a phantom yellow with 5 laps to go. I don't know why Nascar thinks it is more entertaining to see a faster car blow by a slower car with two laps to go on a restart with 2 to go and have a 1 second lead and win then see a finish like this. We will never see a finish anywhere like this again sadly... Bill France has definitely rolled over in his grave after seeing how great the sport once was to how much BS is in it today.
@008bravesfan Yeah...great return for Steve. Sure half the field was gone but staying out of trouble is key to success and he did that! 13 is not bad for a guy who hadn't run a cup race in 7 years and none in the CoT
This track reminds me so much of Atlanta and had photo finishes as well. Matt Kenseth over Kasey Kahne for example...why did NASCAR get rid of this amazing track?????????
It will be called Southern 500 (look on the official website) and they can't and won't move it back to Labour Day weekend. I can't remember why but there was an article on Nascar(dot)com about it. It was apparantly considered but proved to not be a fesible option. They announced the return of the Southern 500 a few months back, before the end of the last season.
It wasn't a spring..it was a welded on manifold and not a bolted on one... Nothing said it COULDN'T Be done in the NASCAR rulebook....it was one of those grey areas that NASCAR lets Hendrick get away with every week but nails every other team for it/
My dad and me wanted to see the whole race since Earnhardt died a week after. Unfortunately when the race got postponed, we were unable to see the rest of the race because of 2 factors.
Thats exactly my point, I consider Dale better since he won 7 Championships with fewer wins. But dunno why you're replying to my msg that was posted 6 months ago.
Well..what I mean is that NASCAR issued an unjust penalty to Martin in 1990 that Jack Roush still disputes to this day. It gave the championship to Earnhardt. If the same people were running the show that ran it in the early 90's jimmie and chad would be docked points every week.
How so? Petty had what..200 wins and only 7 Championships. And they had more races. Dale had 70 some odd wins and 7 Championships. Tell me whose better.
I wouldn't of really called Park an underdog back then. It's not like he had junk equipment and he was in the top 10 in points all year until his career ending crash.
@PhilipTheBigOne yeah, whats interesting is that ive been commenting to you on a laptop, and ya, Gibbs is no good now, and Labonte just needs to go to Hendricks or somethin... even though THATLL never happen... xD but ya, i get ur point... :)
@Godblessamerica2012 True. It's all it seems he's any good for for NASCAR. I guess everything has their guy for a laugh- like WWE has Santino Marella. Robby Gordon's the Santino Marella of NASCAR. Only in there to be laughed at.
Well, he was in first but who knows if he wouldve won. it was still early. In 2001 there was at least 4 or5 races he should've won but didnt due to stupid shit like pit fuckups or mechanical issues.
2001 season was the most emotional season ever for most fans. The 9/11 events would happen later that year to just pile onto the Earnhardt death everyone was still processing. An old documentary on that 2001 NASCAR season th-cam.com/video/hIqwvMBcmVg/w-d-xo.html&pp=gAQBiAQB
I miss the rock. I went to my first races there when I was a kid. Great track, always good racing and really original track layout.
I heard a rumor about trying to bring back the rock at Rockingham. I don't know if it is true or not.
This finish, Atlanta, and the Pepsi 400 were all highly emotional wins for DEI and RCR. And they were all exciting races, too.
Talladega 500 was emotional too since Bobby Hamilton won in the car that helped Dale earn his last race win.
Plus Hamilton's team owner was once Dale's crew chief that won 2 championships. His last 2 championships in fact, Andy Petree plus 2001 was the only year he won as a owner with Joe Nemecheck winning the fall Rockingham race.
@@stephenholloway6893 Hamilton won at Talladega in 2001 in the spring.
@nascarfanatic2425 Yeah I know. I'm just saying that who his owner was at that point.
@espnspeedworldrecroom6266 Yep, I remember. I was there.
Steve Park's only Winston Cup/Sprint Cup victory on an oval.
this was back when NASCAR was fun and competitive and fun to watch.
I so miss this track
I so miss 1990-2003 NASCAR.
Hey, at least it's coming back now
that Pennzoil car was a sweet looking ride
This was basically the lone best moment Steve had in 2001. (At least in the Cup Series) This was months before his season ending Xfinity Series crash that September.
DEI would have dominated this year. Another championship was on the way.
Chris Gombos especially if park didn't get hurt, he was up in the points before his injury
Another? They never won one outside of Busch Series.
@@SuperPinkFloyd79 they definitely was becoming a title threat maybe not with park but dale jr was definitely a factor
Was at that race..and the 3 prior one in Feb right after we lost Earnhardt. Miss that track i can't even drive by it now breaks my heart.
I was here.... Will NEVER forget!!!
park's wiggle off 4 coming to the white flag won him that race lol
I miss Sparky so much! I hope for happiness for him where ever he might go. :) He's one good guy!
I'm a Labonte fan for life
"I was an emotional mess the last few laps of that race but then I heard his voice say 'boy, get it together and go win this race.'"- Steve Park

+Travis M Simpson it reopens in April? For who?? Cup or xfinity or what. I love that track

Travis M Simpson no lol
That’s a GREAT win. Can’t believe I never saw this. Weaker car fending off a challenger for multiple laps??? My favorite kind of win
Look at 6:20 those fans are CRAZY to lean over the wall that way. Wow!
Happy 54 th birthday to one my all time favorite NASCAR’ drivers Steve park is 54 years old today
Racing is a powerful sport in more ways than one.
Labonte had a strong ass car
The Labonte brothers disliked this
I think Joe Gibbs is the third one now.
Frank Dimaggio n
Nah. Terry would like this.
on top of Rickey Craven's first win at Martinsville, and the next restrictor plate race after this at Talledega went caution free. That alone is amazing because everyone was so nervous with that being the first restrictor plate race after SR's passing.
Bobby Labonte let him win that race. Damn...I’ve going back through watching these finishes in 2001...this one is obvious.
Glad to see him back, I was actually rooting for him to finish in the top 10 and hope that another big wreck happened.
Awesome news! Steve Park will be back in cup for the July race at Daytona!

Hey Sunday's race was rained out I had tickets to this race skipped work that Monday to go back and glad I did great race!
did yall notice how theres allways ricky in the tide ride
yeah my boss got mad as hell at me . i was listening to it till about 15 to go. then i just quit working and started watching. 3FORLIFE. 24FORLIFE
God Bless Steve Park, he never had a career he should have had. Maybe he had another win or two in him if Dale was still alive. Rip Dale. Rip DEI
i'd be willing to bet he'd be a championship contender. too bad he was made of glass...

A shame his career was cut short because of injury he was a very talented driver
Golden Years for Labonte
@008bravesfan
Yeah...great return for Steve. Sure half the field was gone but staying out of trouble is key to success and he did that! 13 is not bad for a guy who hadn't run a cup race in 7 years and none in the CoT
someone needs to upload this entire race
I still have a Steve Park #1 pennant on the wall in my garage 🏁
This track reminds me so much of Atlanta and had photo finishes as well. Matt Kenseth over Kasey Kahne for example...why did NASCAR get rid of this amazing track?????????
which one was his carrear ending one..the texas one? hes had too many
It will be called Southern 500 (look on the official website) and they can't and won't move it back to Labour Day weekend. I can't remember why but there was an article on Nascar(dot)com about it. It was apparantly considered but proved to not be a fesible option.

that one bad wreck in 2002 or 2003 he had hurt his career tremendously. He just was not the same after coming back.
My dad and me wanted to see the whole race since Earnhardt died a week after. Unfortunately when the race got postponed, we were unable to see the rest of the race because of 2 factors.
i miss rockingham
ARCA races at Rockingham, late April and late October -- SPEED carries both races live.
An important win
Thats exactly my point, I consider Dale better since he won 7 Championships with fewer wins. But dunno why you're replying to my msg that was posted 6 months ago.
He was. I'm just saying it was still real early in the race, anyway.
On top of that, Craven is no stranger to concussions.
At least this track has racing on it again
Teresa Earnhardt ruined DEI. You know it's bad when the son leaves the business and goes to their arch rival.
michael88h Teresa is a bitch and she’s still fucking people over she won’t let rcr use the 8 font for Tyler Reddick
Why are we racing at Auto Club Speedway and not here? Just confuses the hell out of me.
I think everyone, including Bobby labonte wanted Steve to win.
D.E.I won 3 of the first 4 races that year. Both Daytonas also
Harvick was in an RCR car
DEI won both Daytona races, the fall Talladega race and this race in 2001. Harvick who was in RCR won in Atlanta weeks later and Chicago.
Steve Park in the 1 car wins the first race after Dales death. RIP Dale SR.
that why i watch the trucks...its real drivers racing hard
@Browntown12 bet u cant wait for the trucks to race their on TV
Great for DEI and Nascar have a finish like this after what happened.
Well..what I mean is that NASCAR issued an unjust penalty to Martin in 1990 that Jack Roush still disputes to this day. It gave the championship to Earnhardt.
If the same people were running the show that ran it in the early 90's jimmie and chad would be docked points every week.
Well...their ratio of actually being fined or point deducted is slim compared to the times they were let go with a warning.
@FanToAll yea it was
Bring back The Rock! (Rockingham)
This years race i'm talking about btw
I would say 6...since NASCAR gave him the 1990 title Martin deserved.
I think 2 people REEEEEEEEEEEALY missed the like button!!!!
@PhilipTheBigOne but there IS that line that separates the like and dislike button, PLUS the like button is much bigger than the dislike button... ;)
Nah. The Busch accident in Darlington when he spun under caution when his wheel fell off and Foyt T-Boned him.
@housefaninWA i dont even remember why they took it off the circuit...
Carolina Tater NASCAR claims that not enough fans were coming to this track. Therefore not bringing in enough money.
How so? Petty had what..200 wins and only 7 Championships. And they had more races. Dale had 70 some odd wins and 7 Championships. Tell me whose better.
AMEN
I wouldn't of really called Park an underdog back then. It's not like he had junk equipment and he was in the top 10 in points all year until his career ending crash.
@DoverBroadcasting Yeah, I didn't like that one though 'cause Robby wrecked my guy, Jeff Gordon.
YESSSSSSSSSSSS
@PhilipTheBigOne yeah, whats interesting is that ive been commenting to you on a laptop, and ya, Gibbs is no good now, and Labonte just needs to go to Hendricks or somethin... even though THATLL never happen... xD but ya, i get ur point... :)
@Godblessamerica2012 True. It's all it seems he's any good for for NASCAR. I guess everything has their guy for a laugh- like WWE has Santino Marella. Robby Gordon's the Santino Marella of NASCAR. Only in there to be laughed at.
He was really good until he got hurt
ooooo that one was weird
Shame they got rid of The Rock
I don't care, whats with the third degree? Even though we're agreeing with each other.
Well, he was in first but who knows if he wouldve won. it was still early.
In 2001 there was at least 4 or5 races he should've won but didnt due to stupid shit like pit fuckups or mechanical issues.
Darrell should never ever commentate a race, Just listen to him rooting for Labonte, it's disgusting how he blatantly favors Labonte in this race.
Just some mybcigerette
...... And hush
3 Bobby Labontes disliked
@nascarfanatic2425 well look at it this way, robby hasnt won many races since then and is one of the laughing stock of nascar
The track was way too small
Blasphemy sir blasphemy.
Agreed. Blasphemy.
Agreed that kind of racing built nascar
It was bigger than Richmond and all the short tracks what?
Hey you can’t say polish victory lap that’s racist
The end of this race was horrible. It's a good thing that they don't race at Rockingham anymore. Thank God.
Are you that stupid? I guess racing at 1.5 mile cookie cutters is more entertaining?
We're on the same page. The comment was meant to be sarcastic. How could you not see that?
+mrclamstew i don't see it honestly lol
2001 season was the most emotional season ever for most fans. The 9/11 events would happen later that year to just pile onto the Earnhardt death everyone was still processing.
