My 4th great grandfather, Caleb Haskell, marched out of Newburyport, Massachusetts (Essex County) on April 19th, 1775 as a twenty year old fifer in Captain Moses Nowell's company of militia. They were recalled after a few days due to a panic and fear of an amphibious assault by the British (Benjamin Greenleaf, of the local Committee of Safety, wrote to General Artemas Ward, asking for their return), but instead of staying with Nowell in the garrison on Plum Island, he joined Captain Ezra Lunt's company in early May (on his birthday) and marched back to Cambridge. Lunt's company joined other companies as part of Colonel Moses Little's Regiment. Little's Regiment was deployed along the line at Bunker Hill and I have read that Lunt's company formed part of the rear guard after the redoubt fell. In September Caleb signed up with Captain Samuel Ward's company of Lt. Col. Christopher Green's battalion to go to Quebec with Colonel Arnold. At that point he is listed as a private in the rolls and no longer a fifer.
It's been about almost 4 years since I've first heard this on youtube back then which made me fell in love with fife&drum. Coming back now and I STILL LOVE IT!
Richard must be having the time of his life as he performs not only with this group but others as well, it's nice to see someone having so much fun as he not only entertains but educates the public as well. Well done Richard
I don't know if Rich ever checks this site since so many people posted mean and nasty things here but Rich, if you do check here again, know that your skills are very much recognized and appreciated. it is a joy to see and hear you perform. I wish you only the very best life has to offer and joy beyond your wildest dreams as you move forward with your life. Thank you for sharing your talents with us. Well done!!!
Saw you at Armory House in London in the 90's. A memorable occasion. Looking forward to seeing you in Edinburgh 18. Some of the clearest fife music I have ever heard.
Well done ! So many of the military bands have incorporated DCI style drumming and flourish. I know 50 years ago we didn’t play like that and surely they didn’t 250 years ago. we used old style snare not the high tension that many use today. For me it is a distraction. It is refreshing to see that you are preserving the correct look and sound of our historical past.
Sir if ur the guy with the blonde hair, you and the group are cool af. Ive been looking for this video for a long time. This and other fife and drum videos used to warm me up in a tough time I was going though, like five years or so ago. Love from Brazil.
Rich, thank you so very much for fostering and capturing this wonderful performance of martial music. So few people understand and attend to the subtleties of true fife and drum. Too many "match" the drums and fifes, when often it is leader/follower if played correctly. And that said, many a young man was lured into battle by the summons of the trumpet....
I was astonished when I met and talked with the Middlesex County Volunteers at The Royal Hospital Chelsea about ten years ago that their Fifes are not the traditional six or seven finger-holes variety known in most of Europe and North America, but a conical bore eleven holed flute like fife. They are outstandingly well trained in both drill and musicality, but I do wonder if the sweet tonality of their Fifes compared to many other fife & drum corps is because they play a much superior manufactured instrument?
my fife teacher is in MCV! i went to their workshop this year. a group for 18 and under like this which is what im in is called middlesex county 4h volunteers look em up!
Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I assuming that this was a part of Richard's recital and that, if he was a regular member of the group, he was not in uniform because he was presenting an NEC Music recital.
Everybody is complimenting the musicians but I think some credit goes to the recording! Great balance and separation with excellent treble and bass sound (at least on my sound equipment)! Any stats on mikes used or recorder? Just interested.
LOVE LOVE Fire and Drum music, especially when they are playing period tunes. who is the kid not in "proper uniform"? He plays as well as the "veterans" are.!
S a d N i g g a s it’s all in the grip of the sticks. You have to hold them loose enough to let them bounce on their own to give the rattle effect. No way in hell you make it happen on human mechanics alone. I also know from experience.
This music = resolve plus reassurance. It must have made the soldiers more able to step to battle knowing that they might receive a musket ball directly in the nose.
Middlesex is the 18th century name of the county north of Boston, site of Paul Revere's ride, Lexington & Concord. Now "Essex County." The fife music and drumming are historically accurate:One of Washington's Drum Major wrote an instruction manual after the war including the fife and drum parts in detail.
No. When I lived there Middlesex County was Middlesex County (Arlington, Lexington, Bedford, Concord, Billerica, etc.) and Essex County was Essex County (Newburyport, Gloucester, Salem, etc.). Those two counties were two of the original four established in 1643. The town of Arlington, along the route the British force took on April 19th, was called Menotomy at the time of the War of Independence, though.
I am not certain however you can purchase their CD's and I am pretty sure it's on one of them. I got one on ebay and will be buying more as I find them.
Someone should have noted earlier how well and properly dressed they are!!! Beautiful French style uniform, and huzzah for the wigs, they look perfect and great
If New England's God, that you say, is the same as the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, then He will have The Drums of Middlesex Co. in that Angel Band and forever reign.
Nice music... you've sound great! Can u tell me the size of the Drums please. I'm thinking on buying one this week as I'm playing some colonial music in my concervatory. THX!!
The sounds of drums and fife is life
I always enjoy this group! Hats off to them for keeping the heritage alive!!
colony... i swear if you do this trump/putin lovestory you are going straight back in the empire.
@@jesKristensen What the fuck are you yapping about.
You make a displaced New Englander's heart swell with pride.
Now a nice bowl of white clam chowder . . .
Chowdah!
Shin HUI Lol, what?
Thats the only real Chowder the "other" is just Clam soup........
This a great Drum and Fife Corp!
I just love the drumming, very full sound and compliments the fifes instead of killing them.
This group does fifes and drums really, really well! I was actually surprised at how pleasant they sound

It is so wonderful to hear the heart of all rudimental drum playing. Thank you for sharing. That is a double stroke played correctly. Nice job.

Why isn't this taught in every school? Our history should be cherished.
Ohhhhh, because someone would be offended because of PATRIOTISM. which is too bad.
Naww...more important to tear down statues of history, both Northern and Southern.
What isnt taught in schools, music?
@@KrisWustrow mad?
The expression / dynamics are perfect.
Great to see this
I am still hearing and seeing this wonderful display of Rudimental drumming. Keep it up boys, awesome display .

Wow they play their instruments so well! I wish there were bands like this closer to me. The drummers control of volume is excellent.
Absolutely inspiring. Beautiful. You deserve so much credit for your devotion to tradition & passion for the Art.
AHHHHHHH This was in my head for over one year FINALYYYY THANKS GOOOOOOD
Nice to see MCV at my Alma Mater! It's been a while since I've fielded with an 18c unit, brings back a lot of great memories!

WAOUU !!! Bravo !!!
@scottmitchell56 Glad to see MCV still operates these days.. I've long since switched from drumlining to drumset.
Why does 1 guy not have a uniform? Excuse my ignorance.

I prefer the rudimental drum technique to the current jazzed up style. I love the drum line precision and the fife Melodie’s.
Lovely uniform's, very french

Fifes should be recorded louder, and I'm afraid the timing is a bit off at times. Nobody notices?
We haven't had the opportunity to compare it to your perfotmance....
what brand fifes are they using and what key?
Skip Healy B-flat 10-hole Deluxe Fife (concert A-flat)
