    They mention Captain Fitzroy who is actually a fascinating character. If you like reading about things nautical and want to find out more about Fitzroy's tragic tale and his relationship with Darwin, get a copy of This Thing of Darkness by Harry Thompson. It's more interesting than you expect, I promise you.

    There's a description of Darwin's 'line crossing ceremony' at the equator on Wikipedia. He "was placed on a plank, which could be easily tilted up into a large bath of water. They then lathered my face & mouth with pitch and paint, & scraped some of it off with a piece of roughened iron hoop. -a signal being given I was tilted head over heels into the water, where two men received me & ducked me. -at last, glad enough, I escaped. - most of the others were treated much worse"

    We have a first edition of the Voyage of the Beagle at the library I work at. I was looking at Darwin's journal a few weeks ago. They spent Christmas here in New Zealand, but Darwin didn't have a good impression of the people.

    Going across the equator was a big deal during the times of sailing ships, because the winds near the equator are often non existent for long periods of time, which was obviously a big problem for ships who depended on them for their propulsion. No wonder they had special rituals and celebrations to mark successful crossings.

    • @465maltbie
      @465maltbie 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Well Navy ships still have similar ceremonies today but it isnt quite for the reason you mentioned. Usually the first time a sailor crosses the equator or the date line they are initiated with some silly and usually demeaning ritual. Like striping down and being covered with grease or something like it. It also gives the crew a good reason to let their hair down and have a good time. A good officer knows when not to interfere with the crew.

    How many of these kinds of books are digitized? I'd quite like to read the Captain's logs from a famous ship. Not necessarily the Beagle's captain, but I often see books on Objectivity that I can't find on Project Gutenberg.

    Darwin was NOT the ship scientist. He was the captain´s gentleman companion, needed because said captain was afraid he´d get suicidal if he didn´t have anyone to talk to. I´m pretty sure the ship surgeon was officially responsible for collecting stuff and describing them. Darwin just ended up being better at it.

  • @dfghj241
    @dfghj241 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Its cool to know that at Fitzroy time, the captain of the ship was refrained from having casual conversation, or any kind of relation to that matter, with any lesse crew member or oficial. its most likely Fitzroy accepted Darwin's letter asking to be on the next voyage of the beagle because he was afraid of going MAD from isolation during the journey. Its also interesting to note that, considering Fitzroy was a bit of a conservative, he and Darwin didn't go along very well at all.

    • @Ts6451
      @Ts6451 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well, after all, there are a lot of space in the world, so that's not really the problem with population growth.
      The reason people are worried about the increasing population is the issue of how to supply enough food, water and other resources that population uses in a way that is maintainable.

    On April 1st you should take a mystery box out of the archives, but it should be empty, so it would be like:
    Brady: So Keith, what's the story behind this object?
    Keith: Well this is air, it's really interesting, because we use this to breathe.

      ***** Yes the father of modern meteorology had an amazing and very tragic life. Modern historians are of the opinion that he was bipolar. His achievements were very much overshadowed by Darwin, but at least in recent times he is starting to get the recognition he deserved.
