This worked perfectly! I saved myself anywhere from $110-upwards of $200 with being without my computer from 24hrs to over a week. When i put everything back together the machine started beeping, i stayed calm, unplugged it and went back into the machine and saw that i did not seat my memory cards correctly. My dell insprion 1545 is charging nicely now, especially since i bought a new battery and replaced my rocketfish charger that was bought back in April. the part cost me $17.00, AMEN!!
Thank you for the video. I replaced my dc board today using this video as a guide. I found it to be one of the most detailed video and explained everything clearly as opposed to other video that just showed you with out talking you through.
You are correct, the CPU, and Memory do not have to be removed but the hard drive will have to be removed. (Apologies for the others. We were doing a lot of videos and it must have been overlooked) The BIOs reads "Adapter Unknown" or "Adapter Not Found" is a sign that the DC jack is damaged. If you're good at soldering, you may be able to replace just the DC jack but there is a good chance of damaging the circuit board. I always recommend replacing the complete circuit board. Hope this helps.
I followed this video exactly and it was excellent. I spent $40 for the part and did it myself. Took me about 45min to take apart and about 15min to put back together. Make sure you get something like an egg carton to separate the right screws.
I do not know who you are but at 62 yr old you are the first person I have seen do something so clean, smooth well done that I have watched this 10 times and the only thing I can see to improve this is to replace the voice that is clear with a female sexy voice which would do this video no justice or improvement, this video is well done 1 to 10 its a 15 perfect video
To be honest, this was one of the first videos we produced and just overlooked the step. You're correct, you should always replace thermal compound and/or thermal pads after removing cooling parts.
Wow this is good! Thank you very much for posting, fixed my ex-wife's laptop with ease and saved her some serious money, just followed you step by step. Along the way discovered she may have bought a refurb without being told so, there were screws in the wrong place and other obvious signs of a previous repair. She says no one has worked on it since she got it from Dell. Again, thank you, nice job man.
This video just saved my wallet. The shop I took my laptop to had me convinced that it wouldn't just snap in place, it would need to be soldered. (I was very clear that I had the entire power/usb board. $80 they wanted to charge me. Thanks alot
Your video saved me hundreds of dollars. It was simple and easy to follow. Thanks to this video, only two skills are needed. Listenen and twisting (of the screwdriver). You have my thanks!
WOW,,,,, worked a treat, followed to the word and my dell is now sweet as. I took the liberty to replace the keyboard while I had it stripped and all works, you are stars!!!
Great video. Only the commendation to others is you do not have to remove monitor, CPU, heat sink. Just lightly lift board off and out of the way and you can slide the dr1 charger board out from under the system board. Other than that instructions were spot on!
You should update the BIOS but I don't know if that will make it start charging. I don't think the DC jack is effected by the BIOS. It might just be a defective part.
If the adapter isn't recognized in the BIOs the laptop will not allow the battery to charge. I would first check to make sure the DC circuit board is connected to the motherboard properly. If it is, it leads me to believe the DC jack you replace is defective.
People like yourself/Videos like this are what make youtube great. I was able to fix my laptop with one replacement part. Thanks to your help in this fantastic video.
Outstanding video !! I am 99% sure my DC power jack is bad (Power connector loose & intermittently recognizes adapter - currently not charging at all, but system works via AC input directly (Battery is new). I've looked at many equivalent repairs for 1545 (Yours is best). However others have no need of removing 1 CPU 2 Hardrive 3 Memory Are these step truly required? PS: is there an easy fix for manipulating the DC Jack prongs directly without replacing entire DC board? Many Thx
@308beatZ It should fix the 'not charging' problem, however; there are three components in the charging system that could potentially be the problem. They are the AC Power Adapter, DC Power Jack, and the Battery.
I just performed this task. $15 part saved me hundreds. This is a perfect video - Thanks again! I have new respect for carefully handling the adapter to protect the DC Power jack ;-) I did not replace the thermal pads on HS. Is this mandatory? Are pads preferable to thermal paste? Thanks again dellpartspeople !!
If the DC jack is broken, a new dc jack can be soldered on. It's cheap if you can do the soldering yourself, if not the cost will be about the same as buying a new dc board. If the DC board is broken, you will have to replace the entire DC board.
Have you looked in the BIOS to see if the computer is recognizing the Battery and the AC adapter? If the BIOS is NOT recognizing the battery then the Battery is bad. If the BIOS is recognizing the Battery and not the AC adapter then that may be the reason for the battery not getting a charge and the AC adapter may need to be replaced. If the BIOS recognizes both the Battery and the AC Adapter then it is possible that the charging circuit on the motherboard is defective.
The connectors for the keyboard and mouse, on the motherboard, might be bad but it's more likely the cables are not seated well. I would reseat all the cables and try again.
I would put the original DC board back in and see if the USBs are working on that one. If they are your new DC board is probably faulty. If they don't then you probably have a driver issue or a connection issue.
Thank you very much! Took me 2 hours but will only take me 40 minutes when I have to open it up again to find where I had 4 screws left over. I used an egg carton to remove the screws in sequence and reversed the process.. BTW it works great now!!!!!
You have two different options when replacing the DC jack on the dell Inspiron 1545. You can replace just the DC jack port which would need to be soldered onto the DC jack USB IO circuit board, or you can replace the DC power jack / USB IO circuit board which would just need to snapped into place just as describe in the tutorial video above. I you do not have experience with soldering then I might suggest replacing the circuit board.
Great video, really helpful for people who have not seen inside a laptop before! I do have one question, you haven't suggested to replace the thermal paste on the heat sink once the seal is broken, was this for simplicity or is there another reason you've skipped it? I have always replaced and thermal paste if i've had to remove cooling parts!
Yes, if you have only the port, you will need to solder it on to the DC jack board. Be careful removing the old DC jack, you could permanently damage the board if it is removed incorrectly.
Hi! Thanks for the video. At the beginning you mention that we need a Philip and Flathead screwdrivers. I would like to know what size. Since I only own the regular size ones.
If you are replacing the DC jack and circuit board you will not need to solder anything. If you are replacing just the DC jack on your existing circuit board you will have to solder it on. The method in the video shows how to replace the complete circuit board without soldering.
Is it absolutely necessary to remove the: 1. CPU Processor 2. Wireless card 3. RAM modules If so can you please tell me why it is so and why it would be unfavourable to leave them in whilst fixing the Jack board.
@308beatZ Just take it slow and keep it organized and you will be OK. If you need to take pictures to help you remember how to put it back together. If you really feel uncomfortable completing the repair yourself you can always send it to us and let us do all the work for you.
Why did you need to replace the DC power board? Was your adapter being recognized before the replacement? What symptoms were you having? PM me if you like, it might be an easier way to communicate for diagnosing?
I just replaced my DC charger board.. thanks for that.. however I found that my actual charger is broken (or may have been the issue to begin with).... how do I know if I even installed the board correctly?
my wife's 1545 had the pin broke off inside the charging port and it is no longer able to be charged. I have been told that a desoldering and soldering gun are required to replace the charging port. According to your video that is not the case? Is this true?
@AyatollahWatts If you computer is charge normally then you probably installed it correctly. If it is not charging then you may need to take another look at it.
If I replace the DC power board on my 1545 will It fix that Plugged in not Charging problem?...I've tried differnt power adapter cords and it still dont charge. thanks
@308beatZ If all you wanted us to do is instal the Dell Inspiron 1545 DC Power Jack / USB IO Circuit Board, all we would charge is $50.00 general installation fee plus the price of the part $99.95 plus shipping.
Why do you remove the processor, ram and power button if you're just replacing the DC board? I've done this before and had no need to remove them in order to remove the motherboard.
I'm going to have to replace this power DC usb board...and the cpu fan...Idk why lots of dells have certain keys that don't work? I fixed my non working keys with a new keyboard replacement...
@dellpartspeople Mmmm, I've bought another ac power adapter and that didn't fix it...I wiggle the ac power adapter in the dc power input and it charges it if I keep it still but only for a few seconds? I haven't tried another battery...I want to buy the DC board thing you replaced in this video...but all those components you removed I might lose or forget how to put it back !
Hey! I needed to replace the DC power board because it wouldn't charge at all (I tried 3 different adapters, all didn't work). Sometimes it would show the "plugged in not charging" but sometimes absolutely nothing... I replaced the board and now it still doesn't recognize the adapter. In the BIOS, it says AC Adapter: Not Installed.
Hi. I installed this component, the power jack and usb board, but it still doesnt charge. I know I installed it correctly because the laptop still gets power from the ac and the usb ports work. I have two chargers, one dell and one that isnt, but they have both worked before. I bought a brand new battery only two weeks ago and that charges successfully. So what do I do. I have tried to uninstall the battery driver in device manager as well. I really need your help and would really appreciate it.
Let the dude make a living. $150.00 is a good deal for the faint of heart compared to what GeekSquad would screw you for. This repair looks like a major PITA.
Hi I followed your steps and replaced the power board. But now my computer won't even recognize the charger and won't charge at all. What do I do? I can't update my bios because it need to be plugged in and I can't charge until the Bios is updated...
I broke the locking mechanism for the processor on my Dell 1545. Is the a way to replace it on the motherboard or do I have to change the whole board now? while trying to remove it the cardboard under it broke. HELLLLPPPPPPP !!!!!!!
Hey, i followed the video and did all that it said, but now my laptop wont even come on. The light comes on and the fan turns on for a few seconds and then goes off again. What should i do?
Hey there, I had to buy a new jack board as my one went on fire, i did everything you did and i have past experience with laptops so i know im pretty sure i put everything back together.. I re opened and double checked etc but when i plug my adapter in, and press power button nothing happens. Its like its just dead and my adapter does work as it works on my other dell. Could you please tell me whats wrong with it? Everything seems grand, theres no fire damage on the motherboard only that dc board which i replaced. Any idea? Much appreciated. Kind Regards, William.

@incertobscenity 250-500 dollars at Best Buy not including the 80-some dollar down payment. They send it off to the Geek Squad. You can buy a new computer for that price. It's roughly 150 dollars to transfer your files from your old hard drive to a new one there, too I followed this video and did it within 2 hours. But, I think my charger is fried now...we checked it with a meter and it's not putting out any voltage... .
Found the board for under $20 and was able to do the repair myself thanks to your video. You saved me a lot of money in labor charges. Thank you!

Double check all of the connections and make sure the memory is seated properly. Usually when this happens it's just a loose connection somewhere.
Great video, appreciate the step by step for not only the removal of everything but putting it back together correctly.

I certainly can but it's pretty new, so it may be awhile before I can get one. I'll see what I can do though.
This video was a god send! I saved so much money ordering replacement parts from Amazon and using this video! Keep up the great work!!!

Helped me twice now. Once to replace the power jack. Once to replace the motherboard button battery. Thank you so much :-)
It sounds like the part you replaced isn't working properly or your battery is bad. I would lean towards the part not working properly.

Thank you so much for the video. I am a 42 year old female, if I can follow this video and repair my son's computer....you can too! Awesome!
Wow, Blinda.....go girl.
@cornito2 No, all of your data is stored on the hard drive and will not be lost is removed from the computer to complete a repair.
Is it absolutely necessary to remove the:
1. CPU Processor
2. Wireless card
3. RAM modules

Excellent video! I think that I will now try to replace my DC power board myself.
Thank You So Much!!!
You can find them online, at hardware stores, and hobby stores. The one I have is made by Husky part number HD-74501 Z.
I use a 1/8th inch Flathead and Philips screw driver.
@308beatZ Just take it slow and keep it organized and you will be OK. If you need to take pictures to help you remember how to put it back together. If you really feel uncomfortable completing the repair yourself you can always send it to us and let us do all the work for you.

Hi,great vid,my unit now bleeps, fan runs and blank screen any suggestions ?
Yours faithfully Clueless ..
@AyatollahWatts If you computer is charge normally then you probably installed it correctly. If it is not charging then you may need to take another look at it.
There is a product listing in the video description.
@failsrus96 In order to properly remove the camera cable you must gently lift the locking tab so that the cable can slide out of the connector.
It should use an 1/8th inch tip.
This is so off topic, but my power switch board pin broke, could i use an old one from my old laptop and use it on my other laptop?
If I replace the DC power board on my 1545 will It fix that Plugged in not Charging problem?...I've tried differnt power adapter cords and it still dont charge. thanks

hey thanks a lot. worked good till now. but stuck near mother board. the screws on the mother board are too hard to come out. what can i do ??
Why do you remove the processor, ram and power button if you're just replacing the DC board? I've done this before and had no need to remove them in order to remove the motherboard.
I'm going to have to replace this power DC usb board...and the cpu fan...Idk why lots of dells have certain keys that don't work? I fixed my non working keys with a new keyboard replacement...

Worked Like a Charm!!!! Thank you SOOOO much!!!
Thanks so much for reply,i had not installed the ram correctly !
what type of Flathead and Philips screwdriver do need
Can you do vids on the inspiron 3520?
@dellpartspeople nope, had a bad laptop charger too.... got a new one and it started charging
Does anyone know how much this might cost at a place like office depot or best buy?
@incertobscenity We charge $99.95 for the part plus $50.00 for the general part installation plus shipping.
Would this most likely be the problem if your computer is no longer charging the battery...and new chargers and batteries won't charge??
Replacing the DC jack circuit board should solve your charging problem.
Do you have to remove the heat sink or is it optional?
Yes, the heatsink has to be removed.
Let the dude make a living. $150.00 is a good deal for the faint of heart compared to what GeekSquad would screw you for. This repair looks like a major PITA.
Brilliantly helpful, many thanks.

while trying to remove it the cardboard under it broke.
HELLLLPPPPPPP !!!!!!!
Robert Praino Yes, if the locking mechanism has broken, the motherboard will need to be replaced.
were can i get those types of screw driver
Hey, i followed the video and did all that it said, but now my laptop wont even come on. The light comes on and the fan turns on for a few seconds and then goes off again. What should i do?
what type of dc power jack circuit board is it
Thank you very much man. It was very helpful!!!
Hey there,
I had to buy a new jack board as my one went on fire, i did everything you did and i have past experience with laptops so i know im pretty sure i put everything back together..
Kind Regards,
William.
Unfortunately it's hard to say without having the laptop to test. I would guess that the motherboard needs to be replaced. If the DC board caught on fire, then there is a good chance that connector for the DC board was damaged on the motherboard side. Other than that, I would have to see the laptop.
Additional input:
1)BIOS doesn't recognize adapter
2)Hover over BAT icon yields (4% Available, Plugged in, not charging)
Thank you, this was very helpful.
very informative high quality
Hey! I'm going to try it ! Thanks !
@lujuan73 Where did you get the part for $40?
I apologize, I am not sure I understand the question.
Fantastic! Thanks so much
@dellpartspeople Ummm, what would you guys charge? for the labor and the board...if you don't want to discuss prices in the comments please send me a message thanks.
@incertobscenity 250-500 dollars at Best Buy not including the 80-some dollar down payment. They send it off to the Geek Squad. You can buy a new computer for that price. .
Great video but man that is a ridiculous amount of work to replace the dc jack!
@WVgirllivin4Christ You can find a new AC adapter at our online store. Parts-People
Made things easier! Thanks!
@Fardringle I got it on Amazon. Just search "DELL 1545 DR1 CHARGER BOARD"
Thank you thank you thank you! Fight the disposable economy! Do it yourself!
