The building beside the old movie theater was a Dr. Office. My mom worked there for 25 years. The building with the garage doors was indeed a dodge dealership. Bought my 2nd truck there. That magnolia tree you walk under I use to climb that tree as a kid. Use to be a thriving little town in the 80s and even before. Kind of a shame to see it now. I still have family and friends in the area.

Thanks for the local info. Hopefully we can convince people to shop any businesses that open there in the hope of more to follow.👍

My family lives in that house at 7:05 . My grandfather used to own the car dealership across the street and more locations in the nearby town, Ahoskie. As with the other businesses in Aulander, town government regulations and locals moving away drove demand down, ultimately killing off most businesses in the area. I'm too young to have seen Aulander in its glory days but I know it used to be a nice little town with good people, and I'm glad it's where I came up.

Same story in this town as in so many other small southern towns. Beautiful architecture from a more glorious past, now heading toward ruin. A lot these places came to be in the 1800s. Railroads and farming. World war two generation started to die off in the 80s, manufacturing was sent overseas and this was usually the end result. The things that made these places no longer sustained them so there was not much opportunity. Sad. We are witnessing the end of an era, relics of a past slowly being lost to history. Being a child of the 70s I saw a lot of these little towns that were still functioning slowly start to decline. All those lives lived, all the untold stories of the people a community and their eventual passing. The end of an era.

Very true, but I’m hoping our newest generation will see the value these places offer and rebuild them just like the 20-year-olds of our past did so originally.

The store with the 'lunch counter'. When you showed that a magnificent idea came to me out of the blue on how to turn that town, or any of these small towns, into a hub of tourist activity. The entire plan laid out before me. I can't claim the idea because I wasn't sitting here attempting to figure out a way to revive any town. It just popped into my head. Unfortunately, it would take some investment (not a lot) and somebody with a talent for artistry and I possess neither the ability to invest nor the knowledge to 'build' it. But Boy-Oh-Boy what a grand idea it is! The longer I think about it the more convinced I am this would put any town on the map and draw in hordes of tourists. Kinda sad when I think about such a grand plan and then not being able to do it.

Hopefully your idea will come to life one day.
It would be awesome to see all of our town centers become the social gathering places they were always meant to be.

@@TimothyFrench : it would be awesome if our small towns could come back to life. I am elderly. I remember soda fountains and busy town centers. Sadly, I believe those days have gone forever. This idea would be better than awesome for one small town though. I think it would take at the outside a $25,000.00 investment. It would also take time for word to spread in order to attract people to town and because of that there would be no immediate return on investment. 2 people could run it, at least to start, and the work would be minimal. If I am one of the 2, I wouldn't have to be paid until it began making money. But as I said, I'm old. I don't know people who would be willing to invest. Why this plan came to me rather than to a younger person with an interest and ability to invest, I have no clue. This business is not anything I have ever had an interest in. Never looked into it. Never researched it. I have never seen a business like this. Yet the entire 'How To' was laid out to me, as if a map with instructions appeared on the table in front of me. Very strange. However, I'm elderly and this plan will likely pass into dust with me. I had to share it with you though as the entire thing came to me the instant you showed that soda fountain.
P.S. I'm perfectly sane. No mental problems. Not suffering from Alzheimer's or anything like that 🧐🤣. Just amazed at how this "dropped into my lap" and puzzled at the why.

Thank you for sharing your vision with us. Maybe it will take root in someone who reads it and has the means to do it. It happened in Halifax and it could happen here too.👍

That's a cool bit of history on how Aulander got its name. Aulander sounds exactly how a Tar Heel would pronounce Orlando Florida lol.

Indian Springs looks to be a neighborhood that is in the Town of Seven Springs. I will be visiting Seven Springs sometime in 2025.
I am only filming incorporated towns during this quest so that I can finish in a reasonable amount of time.
