Thanks for your helpful videos SpaceRex! Just wanted to say something happened on me when setting up backup. I bought an external hard drive which has exfat in it. And I could not see the usb1 in hyper backup directory. For people who has the same problem, in order for you to find the usb1, you need to install exfat access from the package center. And with DSM 7.0 you can download it for free. After it was installed, I was able to select usb1 in hyper backup. I hope this will help someone.

Just bought the DS1819+ so been going through your all your old videos. Really nice review and outline of the Hyper Backup tool. Thanks for putting this one out. @@SpaceRexWill thanks, I'm patiently waiting for DSM 7.0 release and hoping that comes with multichannel SMB support integrated and fully flushed out, then I can run an LACP/LAG setup. I'd be able to skip the 10gbe port on the NAS save some money on that configuration at least. But we shall have to see whenever 7.0s release happens... I am excited to be able to spin up some VMs and see how they run on as a sandbox or a remote connection for test cases.
I found this interesting in that I've just set up my new two bay NAS to back up to S3 storage. Now I'm about to set up a local USB drive for disaster recovery. In the video, it's suggested to leave the drive in place on the USB port. In a disaster recovery scenario, you'd want a drive off site, or at least in rotation. At the moment, I'm thinking I'll keep the drive in a safe spot and plug it in once a week to run the backup, and rely on nightly S3 backups. For real disaster protection, one would go off site, and would stay on the NAS all the time. If I was really paranoid, that would be three drives in rotation, one waiting, one on the NAS, and one off site. It wasn't clear to me if the script that was created would auto start when a USB drive was mounted, or if that was an option to set somewhere.
This video is very useful. Perhaps there was one thing that was not explained - the issue of accessing the 'destination drive' (i.e., the external USB drive). I followed every step as described in the video. I then encountered an error message - ' Backup failed .. insufficient privileges to access this destination shared folder'. I checked the relevant info on the Internet - most suggested the issue of 'permission' or 'ownership' of the folder(s) etc. For some reasons, I found that some of the folders that I wanted to backup (e.g., photos) did not have the 'right permission' for HyperBackup to access. I had to change/edit all the permission settings via 'Shared Folder' in the Control Panel. Once that was done, the backup task kicked into action. I don't assume that other people may come across the same problem ... probably just me, a non-tech person trying to do an in-house tech task !!
Loved this video. I didn't know about this app. I set up my synology to backup to my Truenas server, and it works great. No more trying to remember to do it, and lose something important.
Nice! Yeah you can just use an rsync daemon on TrueNAS and easily keep them backed up! Have a specific tutorial for others who might need more help with it!
Some tips: Renaming the shared folder of the external disc to something other than the default - for example to ‘usb-backup’ - ensures that the external disc always has the same name so hyper backup will always find it. It’s possible to duplicate your external disc and swap them over occasionally while using a single hyper backup task for both discs. Unfortunately having an external usb disc plugged in seems to interfere with the sleep functions of the NAS, so will increase the energy usage and device wear a bit (depending on your usage type)
@@averagerider92 The USB disc appears as a "shared folder". To edit its name open "control panel" and select "shared folder". Your usb disc should be visible in the list. Select it and then click "edit".
Great tutorial. Quick question please - I'm using a DS923+ and planning to get a Seagate desktop HDD for local backup. I'm only using Mac computers on my network. Should I reformat the HDD prior to first use or just accept that the Seagate is Mac and Windows ready out of the box (apparently). If formatting is better, which format should I use? Thanks in anticipation.
At 11:08 you say it can't take the place of an off-site backup, I don't see why? I do can remove the usb driver and keep it in my safe. Maybe use 2 usb drives and connected them to the NAS each other week or so.
thanks for the video, Synology knowledgebase is so messy I failed to notice "usbshare1" being mapped without notice I can use as destination, everything makes sense now, much appreaciated!
I've got a lot of "lay-person" experience with computers and software. However, I would not have had the confidence to set up a Synology NAS if it weren't for all your videos. Thank you! Please, I've got a question about using HyperBackup. I'm using an iMac running OS Monterey. I've got a DS720+ (DSM7) with a storage pool of 4TB set up as SHR RAID (2 4TB HDs). Here's my main question: I want to use a 5TB external USB hard drive (NTFS) to use as a backup disk. I've powered it up and plugged it in. Now, when I use MACOS finder to connect to the NAS server, my choices are to mount the NAS volume and usbshare1-1 and usbshare1-2. I've poked around and see that usbshare1-2 is almost 4TB while usbshare1-1 is that remaining from 5TB. It seems that the 5 TB USB drive has been partitioned, magically, because the NAS is 4 TB. Should I mount both usbshare1-1 and usbshare1-2 and let Hyperbackup figure this out? What do you think? Should I mount just one or both? Maybe there would only be usbshare1 for a 4 TB or smaller drive, but I want to use the 5 TB drive that I have. Thanks again!
If you are using Active Backup for Business for your desktop and laptop do you recommend including that folder in your Hyper Backup? Will the space grow too fast due to the changes in all the backups? TIA! (This instructional video was awesome!)
Hi, very helpful video, thank you. One question though: In minute 3:30 of the video you mention that Hyper Back Up has a client that allows this external drive to mount in Windows (file explorer). For this purpose, does it matter what file system one used when formatting the external drive (EXT4, FAT32, exFAT)?
Love your videos! I have 30TB of data to move from Drobo DAS to a new Synology unit. What's your recommendation to backup that much data (professional photographer here). Currently use Backblaze, but that won't work on NAS units. I can't find single external drives in that size to connect to the Synology. What's my best option: another remote NAS? Multiple external drives? Thanks!
Excellent video thank you, I've just set up my backup according to the setting on your video. Thank you for explaining this App and it's features. Much appreciated.
What happens if you run out of room on your backup drive? Can you simply expand the backup onto an additional drive and then let hypberbackup tell you which drive the backup is found on? Kind of like tape backup styled strategy where you aren't backing up to a single physical device ???
Hi Will. Thanks for the video. I've bought an 18tb wd elements drive to backup my ds920+ nas with about 16tb data on it. My question is what is the best format for the usb drive to be set up in? im thinking btrfs or ext4 (ext4 seems to give me an extra 600gb capacity!). I was thinking of using btrfs but i read that you can't use the extra btrfs features on the usb drive (whether thats all btrfs formatted drives or just ones being used via synology hyperbackup and therefore a limitation that synology places?). i also read that ext4 is a lot faster. can you confirm what features would be available between the two formats in my use case and which you would recommend please?
DS923+ has only 1 USB port. Can I safely use a USB Switch Hub to connect both an external drive and the UPS backup interface? I cannot afford to risk my UPS running out of battery before the NAS is shut off so that would prevent me from leaving the external drive connected constantly.
Very nice…. What would you recommend to backup my home 1821, I want to put the backup device in my offsite garage wired with my LAN Cat5….. no need for great performances, at least 4 bays, cheap…. :)
It's also worth calling out that if you use single version, it backs up into a regular file structure (like what you you get if you ran vanilla rsync) rather than putting them all in a .hbk file which requires Hyperbackup Explorer to view.
This is an important part of the backup workflow I would argue. By using the “single version” you’re able to plug and play without requiring proprietary Synology .hbk files. I would make two external HDD copies, one using single version, and the other utilising versioning so that you can get data back from user error/virus etc
So how do you go about backing up nas files on a smaller external hdd? Say you have 48tbs of information on your nas and you need multiple 16tb external hdds just to back up all that info. Do you just designate what goes on each backup, and back them up individually? What do you do if you accumulate more photos to go one one drive but didn't have enough space for all of them? Do you just split up the photo folder across multiple drives?
What would be very helpful for others viewing this video is to address the topic of formatting the drive before doing this procedure. I eventually selected exFAT but only after rsearching this matter. Synology DSM would not recognize a partition on my new LaCie rugged drive until I formatted it.
Great guide. Is it possible to have synology backup my computer to the usb drive as a different share? I dont think I can access the external drive from my computer when plugged into the NAS. The only thing I can think of is to backup my computer to the NAS and it will automatically get backed up to the external drive.
Hi i like your videos very well done thankyou. I have a quick question I want to bakup to a usb array of drives. My synology has 3 - 4tb drives and 3 - 2tb drives using SHA raid this means I have 14tb of usable space. My usb array has space for 4 dives. How would I go about picking the size of drives to buy for the back up usb array?. Assume that all data needs to be as safe as possible. Thanks
Ver interesting video of you on this subject , thanks. I am already using this backup, on an external 8gb usb drive on the fast usb port. I just discovered the possibility of using the backup explorer on windows and have to try that out yet. But I wss also thinking as next step, to use a second usb drive to use as off site back against ransome attack encryption. And then I would just do the full restore once a week so that I can see all volumes and shares just from the Windows explorer. I want to use 2 offsite disks. Then every week I use and overwrite the other disk. And remove it after backup and store it in my garage which is separeate 10 meters from my house behind the garden. That way my data is always protected against a great fire in my housr, as well as against these frightning ransomeware encrypters. What about that idea.I only need to adjust to the weekly disipline.
Hello. Im at the create backup task but I don't see usbshare1. If do i have to format the drive before connecting it to the NAS? I but a brand nex seagate exos and an ORICO hdd FYI. Thanks
Could you please comment on the security of an external drive attached to a Synology via USB? As recommended by your video on Ransomware, I always map to my Synology using a non-administrator account. Is that sufficient to prevent the USB external from a Ransomware attack? I have learned so much about DSM from your videos. Thanks so much.
I have to completely change drive(S) and configuration on my 1618+ Can I use this to backup up entire NAS to External USB via Hyper backup and then change my config, add drives change raid etc. then restore form the Hyper Backup on the USB?
Situation: Volume1 crashed 3.6 TB not repairable. Data 2.3 TB. Full access to data. I need a full backup before replacing both nas hdds. 10 days ago I started backup to usb hdd but now we are only at 16%. Why such a long time? It never ends, did I do something wrong? Solutions? Advice? Thank you in advance
@SpaceRex, great vid - thank you. Nice to know about availability of version history. The video showed pretty good speed for the backup. Did you reformat the drive. My Seagate Expansion drive (external USB 3 enclosure) came formatted as NTFS. Should I reformat as EXT4? (And if I do, will I still be able to access/see my data if I need from a Windows PC using Hyper Backup Explorer app?) Thank you!
@@SpaceRexWill As of now in DSM 7 on my DS220+ I can't see a NTFS partition format on the DSM external volume menu. I use WIndows too on my main machine. SO FAT32 or what?
One thing i cannot figure out for the life of me is ANY way of backup 1 external USB drive to another external USB drive when both are plugged into my NAS. If you can show how to do this you'll be a God!
I can't connect my synology to the internet - coworking space security won't allow the internet connector dongle - how can I get hyperbackup on my nas?
I had a Seagate drive as the external USB backup device but it didn’t last very long, died just inside the warranty period and so Seagate replaced it. However, the replacement died just outside of the warranty period and so I’ve ordered a WD drive this time. My question is, do these drives spin 24/7 (I keep my server on all the time) which would explain why they’re not lasting long or do they (should they) spin down if not being backed up to? If so, how do I ensure they only start up when a backup is happening?
I have a question, will this backup option be valuable in case of a ransomware attack? I mean if one of the computers linked to the NAS got infected and the hacker made its way to the NAS through SMB, will this backup version on the external hard drive survive or it will be infected as well ? Thanks in advance.
I did this but occasionally my backup fails and I get the error "External device USB Disk 1 on NAS was not ejected safely". I"m not sure what's causing this.
Thanks for the video! i like to know i have 3x 12TB HDD in NAS and i have 1x12TB USB, i only use 1 TB for now since i brought the NAS new. Whatif i using the 12TB USB for backup and some how i hit the max capacity in the future, what should i do, can i back up on the 2nd USB for extend Backup storage? thank you
Hello SpaceRex, thank you for the tutorials. For some reason, in this tutorial in particular I was not able to follow along. At the moment I click "Backup now" I got this message saying that I have insufficient privileges to access this destination shared folder, to contact my admin. I am using an external HD using the USB.
Hi, Synology do not appear to have any supported 16TB backup drives. What would you recommend as they wont offer support when their Hyper Backup software fails to perform the backups to the Toshiba Enterprise 16TB External USB HDD. Maybe I need to start looking at other vendors as well such as QNAP. Any thoughts or recommendations as I need to backup quite a bit of data.
Can't seem to find this out for sure, but I have seen documentation about a package called USB Copy, but I can't find it. Has Hyper Backup replaced USB Copy?
Hello, I have a 33.1 GB storage unit and I'd like to back it up on an external HD. Can someone recommend me the best purchase options? I've already bought the WD 8 Tb external Hd, but it's waay to small for my new NAS (I had a smaller one before). Thanx!
HI Will: I have 2 USB WD drives that I have been using (6TB each). I have been doing a monthly rotation in and out of cold storage (Safety deposit box) I have a total of 17tb available on my NAS and currently have about 11TB of files. My 6TB WD are both full at this point, but looking at how I setup my Hyper back up to begin with, I was a bit sloppy. What I want to do is return both drives to empty and start again with a well thought out layout. Problem I am having is being able to clear the drives to start again. I can't find a format or delete all option in Hyper back up for my external USB drives. And when I plug into my USB port on my PC it is not recognized so I can't format it. I have looked over your videos, but don't see an answer to my question/ problem. Is there a video that I have overlooked? Thanks Bruce B
Ok so I have 4 new 14tb drives in the mail. Upgrading from my 6tb drives. I have a usb back up with 13tb on it (all the data). Would it be quicker to swap one drive at a time or just pull the bandaid and rebuild the complete pool from the back up? Ds920+
Do you have a tutorial video on how do a "Shuck a Drive" in a Synology empty bay slot like you mentioned in the beginning of the video? .. To use one of the empty bay slots in the Synology as a backup drive instead of the external drive?
@Zullo- The point of this tutorial is how to use an existing USB port on any Synology NAS device. Not all NAS storage have an empty bay but do have a USB port.
@@krhoft I understand that, I just wanted to find out more information regarding that shucked drive in his Synology. Since he was the one who brought up how he doesn't use it externally for a USB drive. That's why I wanted to know how he had set it up.
So the way that I have done this is just pop out the drive from the case (there are some questions about power supply that I will have to defer to the internet) and from there I set it up as its own jbob pool and did hyper backup to it. This was slightly annoying for some reasons (such as it being its own volume when looking at stats and giving big warnings when the space was filling up) but its pretty strait forward
@@SpaceRexWill Thanks for replying.. this is something I wanted to do but didn't know it was possible until I saw your above video. I wanted a way to have this 2nd backup do a UPC auto shut down with the Synology when it shuts down. Since the WD Easystore external backup I'm using did not support UPC. Keep up the great videos!
What would the steps be to backup to the drive you "shucked" and put into the open bay? 1. Create a new storage pool (storage pool 2) 2. Create a new volume (volume 2) 3. Create a Shared Folder on the volume (BACKUP-SHARE) 4. Use HyperBackup to schedule backups Then can I remove the drive for a once a month backup? or am I overthinking this?
How would you use the snapshot backup versus the hyper backup, other than the potential for a separate physical, whole volume backup? The recovery example you provided for the test directory is just as accessible using the snapshot recovers with less storage overhead.
Thanks. Great stuff. If I like to use 2 pcs External Hard Drive to have them stored in different locations and toggle about each month. How to configure?
@@SpaceRexWill Thanks. I'll try. 1. I did now a new bckp how you desribed. If I start now Hyper Bckp Explorer on my Mac I'm not able to see the drive. In the "Disk Utility" I can see it. Whats the broblem? Wrong Format? The old Bckp on another ex. USB works fine (Ex fat formatted) 2. Is it possible to intagrate into Hyper Bckp from my new DS 220+ an old Bckp from the old Nas DS212J?
That's a very nice tutorial, thanks a lot! Just a question, do you normally leave the usb external disk attached to the NAS and schedule backups or manually attach it once in a while? Thanks
@@SpaceRexWill a lot of external USB's now require power source, particularly if they are the larger ones, vs the small ones that just are powered by USB, which do you advise for these scenarios and why? If i'm going to leave it plugged in all the time, should I have one that has a dedicated power source?
Once again, thank you for sharing! You've been my guide on my synology experience... I've created two tasks, I'll back up once a week (or manually when needed) and set the backup to eject the external HDD in the end of the process, that way I'll keep the HHD "disconnected/Unmounted" the rest of the week, then I've setup the Synology to shut down and turn on in the day I've scheduled (to mount the drive) before the task. Can you confirm if this will work as expected? The idea is to keep the external HDD powered off during the whole week and only turned on for that weekly backup, also don't know if it can be mounted after being ejected in the NAS trough DSM, I hope e doesn't cause it's also a prevention for any attack, that way the information on the external couldn't be accessed. What do you think? Is this a good idea or can It be mounted after ejected since it ill still be plugged in? Have a nice weekend!
@maximo105db thank you for your explanation but I don't mind rebooting once a week when it performs the backup, it's a way to refresh the memory like we all should do once in a while with our smartphones, computers, etc... Thank you for your attention anyway! Have a nice day and merry Christmas!
I swap between two external HDs. Both have their own set of hyper backups created. If I disconnect a drive, and then reconnect it, it’s shows correctly as an external HD but my hyper backups fail. Any thoughts? Thanks.
I am getting 'failed to access the backup destination'. I have already checked the permission and the external hard drive is accessible through the file station. Any inputs will be appreciated.
I have this same setup on my 1520+. However, my seagate backup drive disappeared from Synology after a day or two. I would have to unplug and plug in the USB cable in order to come back. So everytime I do a backup, I would have to pull and plug so the seagate drive can be recognized. I believe my drive went to sleep and synlogy couldn't wake it up unless I pull and plug.
Hi, thanks for the video, very helpfull. My question is: is it possible to backup from Synology Nas to an external Hd but through internet (DSM)? I need to backup from my office (NAS) to my house (external HD) thanks in advance
Has anyone just installed another drive in a spare bay and used it solely as a backup drive? Seems to me it is just as easy to pop out this one drive if I’ve got to make a quick exit. I’ve been considering this approach and moving away from a USB-connected drive, as it is running low and needs to be replaced anyway. (I do maintain offsite backups for absolute worst case scenarios.)
Hmm looking for something that does it the other way around. I'm working on my photo edits on an eksternal SSD. Is there a way I can get my Synology nas to auto sync the elsternal SSD to a nas folder when I plug it in the usb port? I know I can easily setup auto sync on the network with Synology Drive. Any help in the right direction is much appreciated! 😊
I re-watched your video and again, very useful. I am wondering if you are encountering any issues with Windows 11? I am trying to backup and restore my laptop into my Synology nas. However, the backup process does not move beyond 97%. Do you have any idea on what's going on? Thank you!
So I was looking for something like this but I don't know if it's quite what I need, I'm kinda new to synology, here's my issue, I have a few folders that I want synced into the hard drive that I have connected to the synology drive just like you mentioned it. It's only a few folders and I want those folders to back up into the external drive and mirror the folders inside the NAS. I want them to sync if I add something or delete something. I also have data in the external hard drive that I wouldn't want deleted, so what is your recommendation for this scenario? I've looked and I've seen some suggestions where you have to SSH into it and put the code, I am totally comfortable doing this but my hesitation is that I don't know enough about synology to know if this is the right path for it, or if maybe the right solution is the one you described here? Please help, just point me to the right app and I'll do the rest. Thanks in advance.
You never mentioned the size of the external drive your backing up to. Just say I have 20tb on my nas, do I need 20 tb external to back it up too. You mentioned enabling compression but it can only do so much. TIA
Heeeelp. Watched your vid and trashed my Synology DS916+ I had a LOT of space left (3TB) when I started and installed Hyper Backup I config'd it just as you did and attached external HDD. A few days later I go in to check the status (9TB takes a while) and it is flagging Volume 1 full and showing I only have 3GB of storage left. I had 3TB (only 3/4 full before hyper backup). I was using a 12TB HDD to backup the 9TB on my NAS so I'm not sure what all it did but this is rubbish and I'm not sure where to find the snapshots to delete them and go back to pre hyper backup installation. I need to figure out how to UNDO the where it does multiple (up to 256 snapshots) and how to get back to the beginning. I should have only went with "single" backup :(
Thanks for the excellent video and I have followed your suggestion and plugged an external 5 Tb hard drive into my Synology DS220+ I want to backup 3.4 Tb of data. The speed of writing the data to the USB drive is absolutely horrendous. Hyper Backup has been running for a couple of hours and has only done 180 Gb of data and is 5% complete. At this rate it is going to take days to complete. I think I would be better doing a Windows copy from the NAS to a USB drive attached to my PC. It would be useful to know about alternatives to Hyper Backup.
That’s quite odd how slow it is. Any chance the first hour or so was the backup starting? For me I have never had a speed issue. Either way I would still just leave it for a couple of days to run. It’s a much better backup then just copying the files
@@SpaceRexWill 12 hours later it is 953Gb and 27% completed. As you suggest I will let it run and I will let you know the final run time. The question though is how do you do a backup of the Synology without using Hyper Backup. Will a straight file copy do should I need to do a restore?
Do you need 1:1 storage space between the NAS and the external hard drive, or, if the backups are compressed, what is the target ratio of NAS space to external hard drive space for backups?
The backups are compressed, but most people will not see a real storage gain from compression as files like photos and videos are already highly compressed
@@SpaceRexWill Okay, thanks! It sounds like we'll want to be close to 1:1 then, but external hard drives currently don't go beyond 24tb, so backing up more than that would likely require a second NAS/DAS or cloud service.

It wasn't clear to me if the script that was created would auto start when a USB drive was mounted, or if that was an option to set somewhere.
this guy is super chilled
Thanks!
never though of this. just got my ds220 and have a spare external wd raid . perfect idea !
Some tips:
Renaming the shared folder of the external disc to something other than the default - for example to ‘usb-backup’ - ensures that the external disc always has the same name so hyper backup will always find it.
It’s possible to duplicate your external disc and swap them over occasionally while using a single hyper backup task for both discs.
Unfortunately having an external usb disc plugged in seems to interfere with the sleep functions of the NAS, so will increase the energy usage and device wear a bit (depending on your usage type)
thank you for this, I'm doing this now
actually... how can you rename it? the file station won't let me rename it
found it... Control Panel > Shared Folder > Select the UsbShare1 directory and rename it.
Ah in the case where you put it in a offsite safe then you are correct it is an offsite backup
amazing and simple tutorial, thanks a million !
thanks for the video,
Synology knowledgebase is so messy I failed to notice "usbshare1" being mapped without notice I can use as destination, everything makes sense now,
much appreaciated!
I keep relying on you. Wish I could like your videos more than once.
Will, your vids are awesome and very informative
Thanks CC
Use ExFAT so windows can read it
thank you for this, helped me set up my backup to USB drive.
Much appreciated.
are you using a morph transition on your live cam?
Great Job Sr. Thank you so much for the tutorial.
What happens if you run out of room on your backup drive? Can you simply expand the backup onto an additional drive and then let hypberbackup tell you which drive the backup is found on? Kind of like tape backup styled strategy where you aren't backing up to a single physical device
???
Is it possible to attach an arbitrary amount of external mass media to the USB ports of a Synology DS via an active USB3 hub?
Will, thanks for the video. In case the NAS fails how can we restore the files from USB backup? Is there a tutorial video on this?
Good point
hmm, in that case it would be interesting to compare those two with each other and review what the pro/cons are
This is an important part of the backup workflow I would argue.
Why not go EXT4?
Hi, do you have a video showing how to back up into an internal HHD on the NAS? I tried but don't know what options to select.
Thank you, great info, - is the backup available for restoring to a newer Synology model?
1:24 I had to listen to that twice. I wasn’t sure what he asked me to do first time 😅
I have to completely change drive(S) and configuration on my 1618+ Can I use this to backup up entire NAS to External USB via Hyper backup and then change my config, add drives change raid etc. then restore form the Hyper Backup on the USB?
Situation: Volume1 crashed 3.6 TB not repairable. Data 2.3 TB. Full access to data. I need a full backup before replacing both nas hdds. 10 days ago I started backup to usb hdd but now we are only at 16%. Why such a long time? It never ends, did I do something wrong? Solutions? Advice? Thank you in advance
how do you use an internal drive as a backup as you mentioned at the beginning....shucking the drive and putting it in the drive.
If you are a PC user NTFS makes since for you. EXT4 will not allow you to mount on windows
@@SpaceRexWill Wow, speedy reply. Very much appreciated, thank you!
@@SpaceRexWill As of now in DSM 7 on my DS220+ I can't see a NTFS partition format on the DSM external volume menu. I use WIndows too on my main machine. SO FAT32 or what?
@@andresvaldevit3692 Yep, FAT32 is the only other free choice. Otherwise I think you have to use an license you have to purchase from Synology.
Amazing tutorial. Thank you!
I did this but occasionally my backup fails and I get the error "External device USB Disk 1 on NAS was not ejected safely". I"m not sure what's causing this.

Does anyone know how to delete an existing hyper backup on the synology? I don't seem to see an option to delete an existing backup. Thanks.
Fantastic video! Thanks for the tutorial.
Brilliant. Thank you very much : )
Hello, I have a 33.1 GB storage unit and I'd like to back it up on an external HD. Can someone recommend me the best purchase options? I've already bought the WD 8 Tb external Hd, but it's waay to small for my new NAS (I had a smaller one before). Thanx!
HI Will:
I have 2 USB WD drives that I have been using (6TB each).
I have been doing a monthly rotation in and out of cold storage (Safety deposit box)
I have a total of 17tb available on my NAS and currently have about 11TB of files.
@@SpaceRexWill is it possible to use the Basic option instead of JBOD?
thank you so much for that tutorial !!
What would the steps be to backup to the drive you "shucked" and put into the open bay?
1. Create a new storage pool (storage pool 2)
2. Create a new volume (volume 2)
3. Create a Shared Folder on the volume (BACKUP-SHARE)
4. Use HyperBackup to schedule backups
Then can I remove the drive for a once a month backup? or am I overthinking this?
my thoughts too, any success?
How would you use the snapshot backup versus the hyper backup, other than the potential for a separate physical, whole volume backup? The recovery example you provided for the test directory is just as accessible using the snapshot recovers with less storage overhead.
Thanks. Great stuff. If I like to use 2 pcs External Hard Drive to have them stored in different locations and toggle about each month. How to configure?
Just sent up more tasks for the extra disks!
USB works fine (Ex fat formatted)
Thanks
I leave mine on always because you are probably not going to remember to put it on ever once in a while
@@SpaceRexWill fair enough, thanks
Is it working ?
@@chliew4681 yes...
@maximo105db thank you for your explanation but I don't mind rebooting once a week when it performs the backup, it's a way to refresh the memory like we all should do once in a while with our smartphones, computers, etc... Thank you for your attention anyway! Have a nice day and merry Christmas!
what if the external hard rive get broken? Should I make a backup of this external drive as well?

You can disable drive sleep in control panel. This might solve your problem
Hi, thanks for the video, very helpfull.
My question is: is it possible to backup from Synology Nas to an external Hd but through internet (DSM)? I need to backup from my office (NAS) to my house (external HD) thanks in advance
Check this out: th-cam.com/video/-dhnkncnLWs/w-d-xo.html
You would want to setup "USB copy" package
@@SpaceRexWill thanks for the reply. Do you have a guide on this? :)
I re-watched your video and again, very useful. I am wondering if you are encountering any issues with Windows 11? I am trying to backup and restore my laptop into my Synology nas. However, the backup process does not move beyond 97%. Do you have any idea on what's going on? Thank you!
Great videos! If I use my NAS mostly for Time Machine backups having a USB backup of my backups seems like a good idea. Will this work for that?
Yes
TIA
So in that case you would need to split into multiple groups. So you could have 2x shared folders each with 10 TB. And backing up to 12 TB drives
Hi What format should I use for my External drive for Synology Hyper Backup?
Heeeelp. Watched your vid and trashed my Synology DS916+
I had a LOT of space left (3TB) when I started and installed Hyper Backup
I config'd it just as you did and attached external HDD.
I should have only went with "single" backup :(
You probably backed up to the volume1 instead of the USB drive. I would check that
Thanks for the excellent video and I have followed your suggestion and plugged an external 5 Tb hard drive into my Synology DS220+
I want to backup 3.4 Tb of data.
@@SpaceRexWill The run has now finished and the final timing is: 3.43 TB of data - 52 hours 32 minutes to complete at a speed of 18.137 Mb/s
@@glennperch You probably had USB 2 enabled
Do you need 1:1 storage space between the NAS and the external hard drive, or, if the backups are compressed, what is the target ratio of NAS space to external hard drive space for backups?
The backups are compressed, but most people will not see a real storage gain from compression as files like photos and videos are already highly compressed
@@SpaceRexWill Okay, thanks! It sounds like we'll want to be close to 1:1 then, but external hard drives currently don't go beyond 24tb, so backing up more than that would likely require a second NAS/DAS or cloud service.

What to do if my Synology is much larger total capacity than any individual external USB devices? My Synology is currently 40TB and I would love to have at least offsite copies of my files on external drives but I can't figure out how to handle this sort of situation.
You would want to brake up your backup in to ~12 TB chunks by backing up specific folders at a time to specific hard drives
Hyper Backup or Snapshot? I started with Snapshot but now it feels like I've just Hyper Backed-up my Snapshot; do a backup of a backup? Great video!
Thanks for the guide. I'm using Hyper Backup right now, but don't understand why it's displaying progress as a massive 88GB at 5%, when the total data size on the NAS is only 1.8GB?
