Akira from Virtue Fighter is the only "Kung-fu" character and fighter in history; who wears a Karate Gi(uniform) and Hachimaki(headband) to represent Kung-fu. GENUINELY ODD!!!
Cause Japanese love China and Chinese stuff but they want to keep it for themselves...
It is odd. Its always been.
Even the style name is changed to Japanese in the game.
When Virtua Fighter/ Shenmue creator, Sega's Yu Suzuki visited China on vacation to do game research, he met a local Bajiquan master, and became friends and instantly fell in love with the style, even learning some of its basics from him.
When he went back to Japan, he invited the master to Japan, at which, said master and his family were reluctant to go due to years of public tension and mistrust between China and Japan since WWII, but he agreed and he would serve as the motion capture for Akira Yuki in the first Virtua Fighter game.
Now why was Bajiquan ("Eight Extremities Fist", or "Bodyguard style") name in VF changed to Hakkyokuken and why was Akira given a karate gi when traditionally that is not worn? (They typically wear either silky Chinese button up tops and pants or just gym attire)
While Bajiquan style has been known more so since the early 20's in China with undocumented roots of a founder of it in the 19th century?
We'd have to look back at Karate itself for clues.
The 'founder of modern Karate', Gichin Funokoshi, creator of Shotokan Karate, was a fishing businessman in Okinawa.
He, along with Goju-Ryu founder Chojun Miyagi, and the founders of Shito-Ryu and Ishin-Ryu karate, were all poached on the early 20's by then head of the Japanese Olympic team and Judo coach to have them come to Japan and teach their styles in the hopes of creating a new Olympic sport to represent Japan besides Judo.
Because at that time, Chinese and Japanese relations were not good, especially leading into the second World War.
The original Okijawan name for Karate was not marketable in Japan, as it was called "Chinese Hand" or "Tou De" in Okinawan.
So Gichin changed the name to "Empty Hand" aka Karate.
Also, in Okinawa, there actually were no styles, just families and they didnt even wear Karate gis.
They just wore regular clothes and trained outside alongside weights and what not.
It actually looked like Venice beach weight lifting areas.
So again not too marketable.
So the Judo gi gave inspiration to the Karate gi.
And the Budo code would be instilled in Karate to help build character among Japanese youth.
Moreover, the reason it was even called "Tou De" in Okinawa was because China and Okinawa had long been business trade friends, and as a result, often China would send their scholars and dignitaries to Okijawa to teach and train their RyuKyu Kingdom elite and business families and they would pass that knowledge further down to regular civilians.
Two main kung fu styles that would serve as the base root of influence for Tou De/Karate, were Xing Yi Quan, a northern Wudang style known for its hard hitting linear attacks, created by a famous general adept with a spear, and Southern White Crane Kung Fu, from the Fujian province coastline, invented by a woman who was the daughter of a retired Shaolin monk, as she had mimicked the circular evasive movements of a crane that had entered her garden of which was evading her broom as she tried to shoo it away.
Bajiquan has similar linear hard hitting strikes as Xing Yi Quan, so perhaps that is another reason for the comparison to Karate.
Bajiquan and Xing Yi Quan (and the even more brutal offshoot: Xing Yi Liu He Quan, created by Chinese Muslims) were both known as bodyguard styles because practitioners would often be hired to either guard valuable transports, or guard governmental leaders.
Also, similar to Gichin changing the name of Chinese hand to Karate, so too in Virtua Fighter, any Chinese martial art name in the game is changed to Japanese terms instead, also to better market to the Japanese.
For example monkey fist aka Hou Quan, is translated to Kou-ken in the game.
Hou in Chinese means monkey 🐒
Quan means fist ✊
Ken in Japanese means fist, but Kou...not sure that means monkey in Japanese since Haru means monkey in Japanese while Kou in Chinese means mouth, while in Japanese can mean happiness.
So yeah it's weird.
A form of nationalism or perhaps Xenophobia some may argue, or some may argue, Chinese linguistics is too complex to be transliterated to Japanese phonetics.
In terms of Karate, it would take about a 100 years for it to actually be officially recognized as an Olympic sport in 2020, while ironically, one of Gichin's students, Won Kuk Lee, a Korean who had moved from his wealthy Korean family to attend Chou University and noticed Gichin's dojo nearby and since Korea has been occupied by Japan at the time, and Martial arts has been banned for some time, he trained with him for almost 40 years, would move back to Korea to help create Tang Soo Do Karate which means Way of the Chinese (Tang Dynasty) Hand, as tribute to his master, Gichin, and "Chinese Hand"; and when the Korean government wanted their own martial art based Olympic sport, they asked him to use his Tang Soo Do as the basis but he refused saying he didn't want his style watered down for sport and was imprisoned on accusations of being a Japanese loyalist spy.
And Korea would move forward anyway with their plan and created Tae Kwon Do and that became an Olympic sport much earlier than Karate.
Won Kuk Lee was eventually released and moved to America in Virginia where he focused on calligraphy in his last years.
Anyways, thats the long winded short end of it and how Virtua Fighter came to be: produced by Yu Suzuki and directed by Seichi Ishii, who would then later work for Namco and direct the first two Tekken games, and eventually start his own company: Dreamfactory, which made both Tobal games, Ehrgeiz, The Bouncer, Kakuto Chojin and several other titles.
So basically Tekken would not even exist without Virtua Fighter, much like Dead or Alive would also not exist without VF since they originally used their engine, and so, a VF guest is long overdue in Tekken.
